Lahore High Court rejects Imran Khan's 8 bail petitions in May 9 cases
A division bench of the high court, presided over by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, announced the verdict, which had been reserved on Monday.
The PTI founder's counsel had filed bail pleas in eight separate cases in the LHC, including the attack on Jinnah House, Askari Tower, and Shadman Police Station, after an anti-terrorism court had dismissed these petitions.
During the proceedings, a prosecutor had maintained that Imran Khan had directed party workers and leaders to attack military installations if he were arrested.
The prosecutor informed the court that the PTI founder incited public sentiment against state institutions following his ouster from power.
He further stated that the former prime minister had refused to undergo both polygraph and photogrammetric testing and had repeatedly defied orders issued by the trial court.
Imran Khan's legal counsel, Barrister Salman Safdar, contended that his client was falsely implicated in these cases at a later stage, arguing that Khan had already been in custody on May 9 when the incidents occurred.
The prosecutor also told the court that the May 9 riots resulted in damage worth Rs40 million to police equipment, while the attack on the Lahore Corps Commander's residence, known as Jinnah House, alone caused losses exceeding Rs520 million.
Last month, an Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad sentenced 11 individuals, including PTI Member of the National Assembly Abdul Latif, to a total of 15 years and 4 months in prison, along with financial penalties.
The case stemmed from an incident on March 18, 2023, when a large number of PTI supporters accompanied Imran Khan to the Judicial Complex. Protesters forcibly removed security barriers, stormed the premises, damaged property, and disrupted court proceedings.

LHC frees 5 persons from custody of landlord
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday freed five persons after getting them recovered from the illegal custody of a landlord Saeed Anwar in Faisalabad. Earlier, the court heard a petition filed by Rehmat Ali who approached the court for recovery of his brother Jafar along with other family members, including children. The court appointed a bailiff who recovered all the detainees from the landlord's residence. According to the bailiff's report, Jafar stated that the landlord had not only confined him and his family members but had also taken possession of his two buffaloes unlawfully. Flood warning systems: PTI accuses govt of wasting $188m in World Bank funding
ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser on Monday accused the federal government of wasting $188 million in World Bank funding intended to upgrade Pakistan's flood warning systems in the aftermath of the devastating 2022 floods. The funds were allocated under the Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation Project (IFRAP), a World Bank-backed initiative aimed at modernising the country's flood forecasting capabilities, including the installation of advanced radar systems to provide early warnings to at-risk communities. Nearly three years later, however, little progress has been made. 'These radar systems were supposed to revolutionise our meteorological infrastructure and save lives,' Qaiser said. 'But the government hasn't even completed the tendering process. This delay has directly affected our ability to warn communities during the recent monsoon floods.' The 2022 floods – among the worst in history of the country – killed over 1,700 people, displaced millions, and caused an estimated $30 billion in damage. In the aftermath, international lenders pledged significant support, but critics say poor coordination and bureaucratic gridlock have stalled critical recovery efforts. Officials familiar with the project cite a lack of coordination between the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the Ministry of Planning and Development, headed by Ahsan Iqbal, as a major cause of the delays. Qaiser said he plans to raise the issue in parliament and directly with the World Bank, criticising what he called a 'troubling silence' from both the lender and the government. 'Implementation has stalled, and the World Bank has yet to publicly respond to the government's failure to deliver on its loan commitments,' he said. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has yet to comment publicly on the issue, despite ongoing flooding across rural areas – including last week's flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir, which claimed more than 650 lives. 'This is not just a natural disaster – it's a governance failure,' said a senior Planning Ministry official familiar with the project. While the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has launched Pakistan's first weather satellite and partnered with private weather firms, experts warn that without a functioning radar network, such efforts are insufficient. As the current monsoon season causes further destruction, pressure is mounting on the government – and its international partners – to act on the pledges made after the 2022 crisis. Court seeks arguments on bail pleas of 23 PTI workers
ISLAMABAD: A local court on Monday sought arguments on bail applications of 23 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers in a case registered against them in connection with the violation of Section 144 on August 15. Duty judge Rizwan Uddin, while hearing the case, sought arguments on PTI's workers' bail pleas today (Tuesday) in a case registered against them at Industrial Area Police Station under different sections of the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order (PAPO) Act and Section 144. The same court in another case registered against 40 PTI workers at Margalla police station issued notices to defence and prosecution for the submission of arguments on the bail applications.
