How bad will things get for the Boston Celtics next season?
Expectations are low for the Boston Celtics as we head into the 2025-26 season. Joe Mazzulla's roster has lost a significant amount of talent this summer, with a host of young, unproven talent taking their place. As such, it's hard to envision the Celtics ending the campaign with a winning record, even in a weakened Eastern Conference. Of course, it's easy to forget that Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser are still on the roster, all of whom played large parts in the franchise's 2024 championship. Nevertheless, there's a serious lack of depth within Mazzulla's roster, especially in the front court, where things could get ugly as the season progresses. During a recent episode of "The Players' Choice" podcast, the hosting panel debated how bad things are going to get for the Celtics next season. Could they make the playoffs? Does the play-in tournament beckon? Or, could Mazzulla's team drop out of the postseason race completely and prioritize a high draft pick? Did Joe Mazzulla earn his contract extension with the Boston Celtics?
Joe Mazzulla is set to be the Boston Celtics head coach for the foreseeable future. On August 8, the Boston Celtics confirmed that their championship-winning head coach had inked a multi-year contract extension with the franchise. Mazzulla originally took over as Boston's head coach on a temporary basis in 2022, following Ime Udoka's suspension for breach of team policy. Mazzulla's performance, coupled with the team's decision to part ways with Udoka, saw him land the gig on a full-time basis. He led the Celtics to a championship in 2024 and has amassed a 182-64 regular-season record over his first three seasons, with a 33-17 record in the postseason. Shortly after the news of Mazzulla's new deal was announced, 98.5 "The Sports Hub" uploaded a video to their YouTube channel showing the immediate reactions of Tim McKone and Alex Barth to the news. Was Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy right or wrong about Jaylen Brown?
Jaylen Brown is gearing up for his first season as the primary offensive option for the Boston Celtics. The 2024 Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals MVP will step into the role due to Jayson Tatum's injury-forced absence from the rotation. Brown's job won't be made any easier by the fact that the Celtics have a young and inexperienced depth chart following a summer of cost-cutting moves. During an August 8 interview with Dan Shaughnessy of The Boston Globe, Celtics legend Bob Cousy shared his concerns about the Celtics for the upcoming season, including Brown and Derrick White assuming larger roles within the rotation. 'In my judgment, Jaylen is not quite at the superstar level that Tatum is at,' Cousy said. 'Can he carry the load by himself? I see a major rebuilding effort here. Jaylen certainly won't bring them to the promised land. Derrick White's a good player, and he'll produce, and he'll be consistent, but his game doesn't lend itself to carrying a team.' In a recent episode of the "Taylor Talks Celtics" podcast, Adam Taylor and Cody Chalifoux discussed Cousy's comments and explored whether Brown has been given the tools he needs to thrive as Boston's leading offensive weapon next season. The duo also touched on whether Joe Mazzulla would need to alter the Celtics' style of play, and how that could look in practice.
