Mallikarjun Kharge remembers
New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday remembered former Congress President Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das on his 100th death anniversary.
In a post on social media X, Kharge wrote that Das, an accomplished poet, was instrumental in the Non-Cooperation movement against colonial rule.
'We remember the enduring legacy of Former Congress President, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, a distinguished lawyer and an accomplished poet. He was instrumental in the Non-Cooperation Movement against colonial rule,' the post read.
He further stated that Das was a mentor to Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and firmly believed in non-violent and constitutional methods to achieve the country's independence.

He was also a strong advocate for Hindu-Muslim unity, communal harmony, and stridently championed national education and the promotion of Khadi,' the post said.
Hailing from an upper-middle-class family of the Dacca district, Das graduated from the Presidency College in Calcutta.
He took an active role in the field of social reform and women's education. Against caste discrimination and untouchability, Das was a strong believer in women's emancipation and widow remarriage.
Before the beginning of his political career, Das played a significant role in providing legal assistance to those charged with sedition.
His political career was influenced by Bankim Chandra Das, who partly influenced his political ideas. In 1917, he came to the forefront of nationalist politics and was invited to preside over the Bengal Provincial Conference. In eight years of his political career, Das rose to fame due to his love for patriotism and sincerity.
To Das, Swaraj was the government by the people and for the people. His primary concern was the proper education of the masses to enable them to participate in the nationalist movement.
The turning point in Das's career was when he was called upon to appear on behalf of Aurobindo Ghose in the Alipore Bomb case. The brilliant handling of the case helped Bose get acquitted, which in turn led Das to come to the forefront professionally and politically.
The founder of the Swaraj Party, Das was elected as the Mayor of Calcutta in 1924. He is remembered to have brought in greater efficiency to the administration and implementation of welfare projects. (ANI)

Assam begins drive to bulldoze over 600 homes in Goalpara district
The Assam government on Monday began its drive to demolish the homes of 667 families, the majority of them belonging to Bengali-origin Muslims, in an anti-encroachment drive in the Goalpara district. Goalpara District Commissioner Khanindra Choudhury told Scroll that 45% of the homes on an allegedly encroached land in the Hasila Beel area were razed on Monday. The demolition drive will continue on Tuesday to clear the remaining structures, he added. 'There was no resistance from the encroachers and no untoward incident has been reported so far,' PTI quoted Choudhury as saying. The official claimed that the district administration had served eviction notices to the villagers in 2023 and 2024, instructing them to vacate the 'wetland area'. 'We again served them notices on Friday and asked them to clear their houses by Monday morning,' PTI quoted Choudhury as saying. Many residents left the village with their belongings, while the remaining families have requested that the district administration rehabilitate them. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in Assam in 2016, more than 10,620 families – the majority of them Muslim – have been ousted from government land, according to data provided by the state revenue and disaster management department in August. In September, the Goalpara district administration carried out a demolition drive in which 450 families, or about 2,000 persons, were evicted. The families were illegally occupying 55 hectares of the Bandarmatha Reserve Forest, the newspaper quoted unidentified officials as saying. The evictions in Goalpara were carried out in line with a High Court order. This had come less than two weeks after two men were shot dead by the police amid violent protests during an eviction drive in Moregaon. On September 9, the district authorities bulldozed nearly 240 homes, the majority of them belonging to Bengali-origin Muslims from Morigaon district. The residents had built their homes in the low-lying area over several decades. Three days later, on September 12, the officials returned and gave them an ultimatum to vacate the land in two hours. This led to a violent clash between the residents and the officials, during which two men were shot dead by the police. Thirty-three persons, including 22 government and police officers, were also injured in the clash.

Modi govt's negligence in not giving priority to aviation sector safety worrying: Congress
The Congress on Monday (June 16, 2025) accused the Modi government of being negligent in not giving priority to aviation sector safety and said that while it awaits the investigation report on the Ahmedabad plane crash, the Centre must clarify on the "lack of action" despite a parliamentary committee report flagging concerns. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh cited a media report which flagged that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture had raised the issues related to safety in the civil aviation sector through a report tabled in the Rajya Sabha on March 25. "The Modi government's negligence in not giving priority to safety in the aviation sector is worrying. It is evident from media reports that there is a huge shortage of officers and personnel in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI)," Mr. Ramesh said in a post on X in Hindi. "53% posts are vacant in DGCA; 35% posts vacant in BCAS; 17% posts vacant in AAI," he said. How will safe flights be ensured when key departments dealing with aviation safety, inspection, regulation and operations are working at less than half their staff, Mr. Ramesh asked. "We are waiting for the investigation report on the air crash in Ahmedabad, but the lack of action despite the parliamentary committee report is a serious matter. We demand the government to clarify the situation and take necessary steps on this," the Congress leader said. His remarks come after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 people on board crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 pm on June 12. While 241 people on board the London-bound Air India aircraft died, one passenger miraculously survived. Besides, 29 persons, including five MBBS students, are reported to have died in the disaster on the ground.

Congress Slams BJP's First Year in Power in Odisha as ‘Year of Betrayal'
New Delhi: The Congress party launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, labelling its first year in power in Odisha as a "year of betrayal" marked by corruption, broken promises, and injustice toward marginalized communities—particularly the tribals. At a press conference held at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi, senior Congress leaders accused the BJP-led state government of failing on multiple fronts. Addressing the media, Odisha Congress in-charge Ajay Kumar Lallu, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhakta Charan Das, Congress Legislature Party leader Ram Chandra Kadam, and MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka presented a joint critique of what they described as the party's dismal governance record. Bhakta Charan Das criticized the BJP's pre-election promises, particularly the assurance of 'zero tolerance for corruption.' He alleged that just one year into its tenure, corruption in the state had reached alarming levels. 'From ministers to bureaucrats, everyone seems to be neck-deep in corruption,' Das said, citing the recent arrest of a Chief Engineer in the Rural Development Department, who was found in possession of large amounts of cash and owned twelve properties. 'How can one individual accumulate such assets without systemic complicity?' he asked. Das also accused the government of betraying farmers, claiming that many had either been denied procurement of their paddy or were being paid ₹250–₹300 less than the Minimum Support Price (MSP). 'This is nothing short of economic injustice,' he said. One of the central themes of the Congress's criticism was the alleged marginalization of tribal communities, despite Odisha now having a tribal Chief Minister. Congress leaders expressed disappointment that instead of improving tribal welfare, the community had faced increased hardships under the BJP government. 'It's both ironic and tragic that under a tribal CM, the tribal population is the worst affected,' said Ram Chandra Kadam. 'They are being dispossessed of their land and deprived of justice.' Ajay Kumar Lallu echoed this sentiment, highlighting the ongoing migration crisis in the state. 'People are being forced to migrate in search of jobs. The BJP's promises of development have turned out to be hollow,' he said, adding that the first year of BJP rule had brought 'no visible change' to the lives of common people. Adding to the list of grievances, MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka accused the BJP government of trying to impose the three-language formula in Odisha, allegedly sidelining the Oriya language. He also claimed that pension and welfare schemes promised during the election campaign had either been abandoned or drastically reduced. 'The BJP government has undermined linguistic identity and failed to protect the welfare of the people it pledged to serve,' Ulaka said. The Congress leadership vowed to continue exposing the failures of the BJP government and stand with farmers, tribals, and the underprivileged. 'The people of Odisha deserve better than this betrayal. We will not stay silent,' said Das, as the party hinted at organizing public outreach and protests in the coming months.
