Andy Murray's split from wife Kim saw Wimbledon icon splurge on purchase before being pulled over by police

Wimbledon icon Sir Andy Murray has opened up on a difficult period in his relationship with wife Kim Sears, revealing a rare moment of impulsiveness from 2008 that ended in disaster
As Wimbledon 2025 gets up and running, British tennis legend Sir Andy Murray has shared a rare insight into a turbulent period in his otherwise steady relationship with wife Kim Sears. The Scottish icon recalled an unexpected tale from more than 10 years ago when a temporary split from Sears led to a spontaneous purchase and a close encounter with the law.
The couple tied the knot in 2015 and are widely seen as something of an iconic pairing on the tennis scene. Their relationship has withstood the immense pressures of Murray's career, including the nerve-wracking SW19 showdowns that kept spectators and family members alike on tenterhooks.

From his historic Wimbledon title wins in 2013 and 2016 to the punishing matches that shaped his legacy, Sears has been a constant figure, standing by him through every triumph and setback. Together, they have four children and have forged a life grounded in mutual respect and collective resilience.

However, the pair briefly went their separate ways in 2008, which left Murray in a state of shock. And the Glaswegian, who is due to be honoured with a statue outside the All England Club, has opened up about how he responded during a hurtful period in his life.
During a recent live show (via the Daily Express), Murray revealed that he dealt with the emotional aftermath in a way that was completely out of the ordinary for him. He splashed out on a Ferrari, which he affectionately named "Barry the Ferrari."
"I thought it was cool," the 38-year-old laughed. "The first day I took it out to drive, it got pulled over by the police because the insurance hadn't cleared. I got rid of it [after] a couple of months, because it wasn't really me."
This incident sheds light on a more vulnerable aspect of Murray, who is typically known for his stoic public persona. However, there are rare exceptions to that rule, like the occasional tear shed on Centre Court.
The temporary separation from Sears proved to be a turning point, ultimately fortifying their bond. Since getting back together, they have tackled life's hurdles side by side, from the pressures of Murray's career to the delights and challenges of marriage and raising children.

The couple began their romance in 2005. Kim - the daughter of player-turned-coach Nigel Sears, who has worked with Emma Raducanu - immediately clicked with Andy due to their shared passion for tennis.
They announced their engagement in 2014 and married the following year. The family now resides in Surrey with their son and three daughters.
With Andy having hung up his rackets and coaching duties on hold, he theoretically has more time for family life. However, Kim playfully hinted that this isn't quite the reality as she joked: "He is playing so much f***ing golf."
Despite the jest, it's clear their partnership has only strengthened over the years. Even if Murray does spend more time on the fairways than Kim might like.
Murray recently told The Guardian he wouldn't be attending Wimbledon this year unless his children want to attend. And after 20 years together, Kim may be content with tennis commitments being put on hold.

Paddleboarders urged to take care amid increase in callouts

A warning has been issued after RNLI lifeguards have seen an increase in paddleboarders in distress across Scottish waters. Paddleboarding is one of the fastest-growing water sports and saw a major increase in popularity during the COVID-19 lockdown. However, as nice weather continues across Scotland, the RNLI said it has received an increase in calls from paddleboarders in distress. The charity said advice is easy to find on their life-guarded beaches. STV News It comes after the death of Alexander McNab, who died while paddleboarding Lochore on June 28. The 15-year-old's family described him as an adventurous, bold, hard-working and ambitious boy. Calum McNicol from Paddle Scotland is urging people to be safe and shared information on things paddleboarders should consider before heading out. He told STV News it's crucial for people to spend a 'little bit of time on the beach'. 'Stop, look and listen. I make no apologies for reinventing the Green Coast code, but when you turn up at the place that you want to launch to spending a few minutes just looking down the boat, you're assessing the situation before you go on,' he said. Mr McNicol added that people should always have the correct equipment, including a wetsuit, personal flotation device, and phone, before hitting the water. 'There's there's two important takeaways from this. One is about wind direction and establishing what's happening with the wind,' he added. 'And the second one is having a means of communication. I've got my mobile phone in a waterproof pouch. It costs a couple of quid or ten a penny, but is an integral part of safety kit.' He said that people should take note of the winds before heading out on their boards, and never take to the water when there's an offshore wind. 'If you feel the wind on your face, that's what we call an onshore wind. And it's cool in the gang. We can go with that,' he added. 'But if we feel the wind on our back or the back of our heads, that means the wind's blowing offshore. And the golden rule for the paddleboarding is we just don't take to the water when it's an offshore wind.' Rangers have kept us in the dark and we don't have an idea of how they'll play, says Panathinaikos boss

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUI VITORIA admits he's in the dark about what kind of Rangers he will face - but the Panathinaikos boss insists his side will be ready for anything. The Ibrox club have a new manager in Russell Martin and all their pre-season games bar their home friendly with Club Brugge have been behind closed doors. He said: 'Yes it was a challenge for me because we didn't see almost any game. The new coach has new ideas and it's different football than was played here previously. 'They have only played one friendly match against Brugge which was open. The rest were closed so it was very difficult for us to have a lot of information. 'This makes our job and my job as a trainer a bit more difficult. We have tried to find the information we need but we are in the beginning of the season. Details make a difference and we don't know them. 'Maybe their new coach has more information about us than we do about them but we don't worry too much. 'We control what we can control. So what is very important is the attitude and concentration and these things can make all the difference in these games. 'I'm not preoccupied about this but this is a reality. It might be a positive thing but also it could be a disadvantage. 'You cannot know how the course of the game will go. Every game is different and at this stage of the season it's even more difficult. 'Normally I want to know about the other team but I don't cry because of that. I face the opponent and let's fight to the limit and put everything on the pitch.' Former Benfica boss Vitoria has been a manager for 23 years but this will be the first time he has faced Scottish opposition, even as a player. 'Absolutely brilliant or RUBBISH' - Gassama Rangers transfer verdict and Souttar to leave But he is well aware of Panathinaikos' unbeaten seven-game run against Scottish opposition, as well as Greece's recent Nations League triumph over Steve Clarke's Scotland national team side earlier this year. Vitoria said: 'It will be the first time I'll play against a team from Scotland. Of course it's a football I appreciate and I appreciate the evolution the football has had in the last years with the good ideas. 'The atmosphere is always fantastic but when we go to the pitch we will only focus on the first 11 of the team. 'We study all we can but my first impression about football here is fantastic. A good atmosphere is what I keep in my memory. 'As for the record between Greek teams and Scottish teams in general, I know the history but I don't believe in these kind of standard happenings. 'The fact Greek teams showed they have generally beaten Scottish teams? We respect Rangers but we have ambitions and values. 'I recognise and respect Rangers. They are well known and have good values, they have good players. 'The most important word is concentration. What is important also is the character of the player and the team.' 2 Pana right-back Georgios Vagiannidis played the full 90 minutes of that Greece win at Hampden in March. He thinks the stability in his side could give them an edge against a Rangers side still getting to know each other. Vagiannidis said: 'It's important our trainer is the same one as last year and also the main column of our team, the players, are also the same. 'Our fans came to the training centre to see us. So many came out under a very heavy sun and in very hot weather. 'This gave us a lot of pleasure and confidence because we feel the fans are with us. 'I hope in the second leg at the Olympic Stadium we are going to give them what they deserve. We consider this pressure as a very good base for have to have a clear mind and way of thinking.'
