Ganga nears 16-year flood record at Kahalgaon, forces evacuations

1 2 Patna: The Ganga's floodwaters continued to wreak havoc on Saturday, inundating the low-lying areas of towns along its banks and sweeping the diara regions of nine districts. The situation was particularly grave in the diara areas of 10 blocks in Bhagalpur district, where water levels were projected to reach the highest flood level (HFL) by Sunday afternoon at Kahalgaon, a record set 16 years ago. Three people drowned in Begusarai district as a result of the rising waters. In Bhagalpur, university staff have resorted to using boats to reach their offices due to severe waterlogging on campus. Floodwaters, knee-deep in places, have also entered the Bhagalpur Engineering College premises. On Saturday, district administrations in Vaishali, Samastipur and Begusarai ordered the closure of schools located in submerged areas. The water resources department (WRD) flood bulletin for Saturday said the Ganga's water level was still rising between Hathidah in Patna district and Kahalgaon. In Patna, however, there was some relief as the river was flowing below the danger mark from Allahabad and Varanasi to Buxar and showed a falling trend even at Digha and Gandhi Ghat. In Bhagalpur, the scenario was worsening. On Saturday, the Ganga was flowing 78cm above the danger mark with a further rise of 18cm expected by Sunday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brigade Avalon™ Official Brigade Avalon Learn More Undo Water from Patna was moving towards the eastern stretches, massing around Kahalgaon and further downstream. The northern part of Bhagalpur district was also under strain from the Kosi, which was flowing 1.25 metres above the danger level at Kursela on Saturday. The WRD bulletin and Central Water Commission (CWC) forecast indicated that the Ganga, flowing 1.49 metres above the danger mark of 31.09 metres at Kahalgaon on Saturday, would rise by a further 30cm by Sunday. This would take it to 1cm above its 2009 HFL of 32.87 metres. As a result, a deluge-like scene has unfolded between Kahalgaon and Pirpainty on the river's southern side and from Naugachhia and Gopalpur to Kursela on the northern bank, forcing marooned residents to seek shelter along roadsides and embankments. Yamuna water level nears warning mark in Delhi

'The reason for the increase in level is mostly due to the high amount of water released from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrage every hour,' an official from the central flood room said. The situation is being monitored and all the concerned agencies have been asked to take precautionary measures to handle with flood like situation, they said. New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) The Yamuna in Delhi reached the mark of 204.40 metre at 9 am at the Old Railway Bridge, nearing the warning level of 204.50-metre, officials said on Saturday. The increase in level is likely due to rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Haryana and Uttarakhand, he added. The Old Railway Bridge serves as a key observation point for tracking the river's flow and potential flood risks. As per the flood control department Wazirabad is releasing around 30,800 cusecs and Wazirabad barrage is realising around 25,000 cusecs of water every hour. The warning mark for the city is 204.5 metre, while the danger mark is 205.3, and evacuation starts at 206 metre. Water released from the barrage typically takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi.
