14 Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrike on tent in S. Gaza: Sources

Gaza, May 31 (UNI) At least 14 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tent sheltering displaced people in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on Friday, according to Palestinian security and medical sources.
Medical sources told Xinhua that the casualties included women and children, and that all the wounded were taken to hospital.
In a statement, the Israeli army said its forces had continued operations across the Strip over the past 24 hours, targeting "terrorists, military buildings, observation and sniper positions that posed a threat to the forces, underground infrastructure, and other terrorist structures."
In a separate statement, the army said its forces operating in the Khan Younis area, acting on intelligence about the presence of underground Hamas infrastructure, had "uncovered and destroyed an underground tunnel approximately one kilometre long."
"The tunnel's route was used to carry out terrorist attacks, and the terrorists blatantly exploited the civilian infrastructure in the area," the statement said.
Since Israel resumed its intensified military campaign on March 18, at least 4,058 Palestinians have been killed and 11,729 injured, bringing the overall death toll in Gaza since the war began in October 2023 to 54,321, with a total of 123,770 people injured, according to health authorities in Gaza on Friday.

IDF exploded 50 bombs in 30 seconds in precision strike that killed Hamas commander Sinwar

(Source: AFP) The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) on May 13 carried out a precision surgical airstrike, dropping over 50 bombs within 30 seconds. The swift operation allegedly targeted a Hamas command-and-control centre situated beneath a hospital in Gaza's Khan Yunis. The IDF has now released a 3D illustration, projecting how the strikes were launched to target the command centre without damaging the civilian infrastructure above. The IDF said senior Hamas commander Muhammad Sinwar and operative Muhammad Shabana were also killed in the precision strikes. Israeli forces say the centre was used by Hamas to direct terrorist operations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The terrorists were eliminated while operating in an underground command and control centre under the European Hospital in Khan Younis, deliberately endangering the civilian population in and around the hospital,' a joint statement by the IDF and Shin Bet security agency read, according to The Times of Israel. 'Prior to and during the strike, measures were taken to minimise the risk of civilian harm,' the IDF added. The Health Ministry, operated by Hamas, reported 16 fatalities and over 70 injuries resulting from the Israeli strike. Major blow to Hamas leadership The attack was among the most significant assassinations of Hamas leadership since the war started on October 7, 2023. Muhammad Sinwar, the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, now slain top leader of Hamas in Gaza, was a crucial figure in the group's military planning. The IDF stated that the precision strike disrupted Hamas's command structure and demonstrated the effectiveness of Israeli intelligence and air capabilities. The IDF released a video illustrating the strike days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Israeli parliament, announcing Sinwar's 'elimination' and naming other Hamas officials killed over the past 20 months, including Yahya Sinwar. Following the IDF's announcement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a warning to remaining Hamas leaders. 'Now it is official: The murderer Muhammad Sinwar has been eliminated… and he was sent to meet his brother at the gates of hell,' Katz said. 'Izz al-Din Haddad in Gaza and Khalil al-Hayya abroad, and all their partners in crime, you are next in line.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

'Make it a one-way trip': Greta Thunberg faces heat as she leaves for Gaza

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg (Pic credit: Getty Images) Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is preparing to sail to Gaza this weekend aboard a humanitarian aid vessel, a bold and controversial voyage aimed at challenging Israel's ongoing blockade, which critics warn is starving civilians and plunging Gaza into famine. The 22-year-old will depart Sunday from Catania, Sicily, alongside other international activists aboard the ship Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC). Their mission is to deliver vital aid and draw global attention to the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. "The world cannot be silent bystanders," Thunberg said in a statement about the mission. "This silence and passivity that we are seeing from most of the world is deadly. We are seeing a systematic starvation of 2 million people. Every single one of us has a moral obligation to do everything we can to fight for a free Palestine." The World Health Organisation recently warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, with 75% of its population facing "emergency" or "catastrophic" food insecurity. The FFC aims to bring relief and challenge the months-long blockade enforced by Israel, which has faced mounting international criticism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Вот что поза во сне говорит о вашем характере! "She's sailing to Gaza like it's some sort of idyllic holiday destination," said Sky News Australia host Danica De Giorgio, naming Thunberg her "big loser of the week." "She really is annoying at all times," De Giorgio added. Another commentator, Prue MacSween, said, "She's such an urban terrorist herself, she'll fit right in. Let's just hope she stays over there." On social media, many users echoed similar sentiments, with comments like "Let's hope it's a one-way voyage" and "I hope she stays in Gaza." High-profile passengers and past attacks Also joining Thunberg on the Madleen are "Game of Thrones" actor Liam Cunningham and European Parliament member Rima Hassan. The voyage follows a failed attempt last month by another FFC vessel, Conscience, which was allegedly struck by drones in international waters near Malta. The group blamed Israel for the attack, though the Israeli government has not confirmed responsibility. FFC's efforts have drawn both praise and scrutiny over the years, often seen as a form of civil disobedience challenging the legality and morality of the Gaza blockade.

Didi's time is up, BJP will come to power in Bengal in 2026: Amit Shah

Kolkata, June 1 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a sharp offensive against West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee government, asserting that in a violence-free election, the people of the state would ensure the Trinamool Congress's defeat and the BJP will form the government in 2026. Three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared in North Bengal's Alipurduars that West Bengal needs freedom from 'Five Sankats (problems)' - politics, violence, appeasement, riots, and corruption - Shah told BJP workers here ''In Bengal, during the elections and after Didi's (Chief Minister Banerjee) victory, hundreds of BJP workers were killed. Didi, how long will you protect them?" "I'm telling you — your (government's) time is up. In 2026, the BJP will form the government," Shah said in his address to the party workers at the Netaji Indoor stadium here. 'I assure all our Mandal office-bearers that once the Trinamool government is ousted, we will dig out the culprits from beneath the ground if necessary and ensure they are punished for murdering our workers. Violence has no place in a democracy. Didi, if you have the courage, conduct an election without violence and see what happens. The people of Bengal will make sure you forfeit your deposit,' he said. Countering Mamata Banerjee's allegation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is selling 'Operation Sindoor' for political traction, the Union Home Minister said, 'A few days ago in Pahalgam, terrorists sent by Pakistan brutally killed innocent civilians after asking their religion in front of their families. You tell me — should those terrorists sent by Pakistan not be punished? Was Modi ji not right to carry out Operation Sindoor?' 'This is what's causing pain in Didi's stomach. When people from Bengal were being killed there, it would have been right if Didi had expressed this pain. But she said nothing then. Now, when Modi ji comes here after Operation Sindoor, a cheap political comment is made opposing the operation. You were not just opposing Operation Sindoor — you were toying with the emotions of crores of mothers and sisters of this country,' Shah said. Shah appealed to the "maternal power of Bengal" to make Banerjee understand the true value of indoor (vermilion) in the upcoming election for daring to question Operation Sindoor. "Mothers and sisters, show her what it truly means to insult sindoor!' he added. Shah, who arrived at Netaji Indoor Stadium at 2.16 pm along with Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, opened his speech by paying 0homage to Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, He also paid tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee - the founder of BJP's precursor Bharatiya Jana Sangh. 'This land has guided India for generations. Be it knowledge, science, spirituality, or the freedom struggle — Bengal has always led the way. For many years, Bengal was ruled by the communists. Then came Mamata Didi with her slogan of 'Ma-Mati-Manush' (Mother, Motherland, and People). "Today, she has turned this great land of Bengal into a hub of infiltration, corruption, atrocities on women, crime, bomb blasts, and mistreatment of Hindus," he said. Shah's fierce criticism of Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, close on the heels of PM Modi denouncing the state government, is a clear indication that the BJP top leadership has begun sounding the bugle for the 2026 assembly elections in the state.
