Explosion at a California fireworks warehouse sets off fires and forces evacuations

Arab News02-07-2025
CALIFORNIA: An explosion at a fireworks warehouse in northern California caused several fires, sending black smoke into the air and forcing evacuations, authorities said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
People were urged to avoid the area of Esparto and Madison for several days following the Tuesday night explosion, which set off multiple fireworks and caused a large fire that led to other spot fires and collapsed the building.
'The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area,' the Yolo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
The cause of the explosion was under investigation, the office said.
The fire had reached 78 acres (32 hectares) as of Tuesday night, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
Esparto is in a rural area about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento.
'We do believe this location is owned by an active pyrotechnic license holder,' Deputy State Fire Marshal Kara Garrett told KXTV. She added: 'This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements.'
Gov. Gavin Newsom's office posted that it was tracking the fire and that state ground and air resources were deployed.
'The State Fire Marshal has sent an arson and bomb investigation team, and stands ready to provide additional support as needed,' the statement said.

Two dead, 10 hospitalized after blasts at US steel plant

Two workers died and 10 were wounded Monday after blasts at a US Steel plant in the state of Pennsylvania, officials said. 'Multiple explosions occurred today at US Steel Clairton Coke Works,' the state's Governor Josh Shapiro said in a post on X, naming a plant some 15 miles (25 kilometers) outside the city of Pittsburgh. 'Injured employees have now been transported to local hospitals to receive care, and search-and-rescue efforts remain active at the plant,' he added. US Steel and Allegheny County Police reported two people were found dead, with the second fatality requiring 'an extensive search and rescue effort' to locate the body. One injured victim who had previously been reported missing was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment, authorities said, adding that 'nine [other] people were transported to area hospitals to be treated for a variety of injuries.' US Steel said the incident happened at around 11 am (1500 GMT) on Monday and that emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. 'During times like this, US Steel employees come together to extend their love, prayers, and support to everyone affected,' David Burritt, CEO of the company, said in a statement. Some US media outlets had reported that people were trapped under the rubble of the explosion. Videos on social media, not verified by AFP, appeared to show firefighters battling the blaze in front of a gutted industrial building, under a thick plume of white smoke. The Clairton Coke Works is the largest coking factory in the United States -- a facility where coal is processed to produce coke, a key fuel in steelmaking.

Explosion at Lebanese Arms Depot Kills 6 Army Experts, Wounds Several Others

Munition in an arms depot in south Lebanon exploded Saturday as army experts were dismantling them, killing six of them and wounding several others, the army said. The incident occurred on the edge of the southern village of Zibqin in Tyre province, the army said. It added that efforts were being made to determine the cause of the blast but gave no further details. The depot is believed to have been used by the armed group Hezbollah. The blast took place south of the Litani River in an area where Hezbollah withdrew its fighters under the terms of a ceasefire that ended a 14-month conflict with Israel in November. Over the past months, Lebanese troops and UN peacekeepers have been taking over Hezbollah posts in the area. On Thursday, the Lebanese Cabinet voted in favor of a US-backed plan to disarm Hezbollah and implement a ceasefire with Israel. The Lebanese government asked the national army to prepare a plan in which only state institutions in the small nation will have weapons by the end of the year. Hezbollah officials have said they will not disarm before Israel withdraws from five hills along the border and stops airstrikes that have killed more than 250 people since the ceasefire. The government's decision has angered Hezbollah and its supporters, who have been staging protests in areas where the Iran-backed group enjoys support. The army warned in a statement Friday that it will not allow any attempts to endanger the country's security. It warned protesters that it will not allow the closing of roads or attack private or public property.

$7K worth of Labubu dolls stolen from Los Angeles store, authorities say

LOS ANGELES: A group of masked thieves stole about $7,000 worth of Labubu dolls from a Los Angeles-area store earlier this week, authorities said. The incident took place early Wednesday morning at a store in La Puente, a city about 18 miles (29 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, the LA County Sheriff's Department said. The department said the suspects used a stolen Toyota Tacoma in the incident, which was recovered shortly afterward. The agency said it was investigating the case and did not have additional information. The labubu, a toy created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, have become a popular collectible item a decade after the toothy monsters were first introduced. Toy vendor One Stop Shop said in an Instagram post that the thieves 'took all of our inventory trashed our store.' The store posted surveillance footage showing a group of people wearing hoodies and face coverings breaking in. The suspects are seen shuffling through items and carrying boxes out of the shop. 'We are still in shock,' the store said in its post, urging people to help them find the thieves.
