(Reuters) -The U.S. Department of Justice and FBI on Monday announced an arrest and indictments targeting North Korea's so-called 'IT worker' program, where North Koreans obtain remote IT-related positions at more than 100 U.S. companies, and use that access to steal money and information from a host of companies around the world.
The North Korean workers used compromised identities of more than 80 U.S. citizens to obtain remote jobs at more than 100 U.S. companies and caused more than $3 million in legal fees, remediation and other costs, according to the DOJ.
The North Koreans also allegedly stole at least $900,000 worth of cryptocurrency from one Georgia-based company with their access, along with employer data and source code, including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) data, from a California-based defense contractor, the DOJ said.
Monday's announcement included one arrest, two indictments, searches of more than two dozen U.S. locations hosting multiple laptops used by remote North Korean workers, and the seizure of financial accounts and websites used by the participants as part of the alleged scheme, according to a DOJ statement.
The Permanent Mission of North Korea to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Zhenxing 'Danny' Wang and Kejia Wang, both U.S. citizens, were indicted as part of the operation, according to the DOJ. Zhenxing Wang was arrested in New Jersey, while Kejia Wang remains free, a DOJ spokesperson said in an email. An attorney for ZhenxingWang could not be immediately located.
The two men, along with four other unnamed U.S. 'facilitators,' assisted the North Koreans by procuring and operating laptops used by the overseas workers, created financial accounts to receive money earned by the workers to be sent back to North Korea, and created shell companies to make the workers appear more authentic, according to the DOJ, earning nearly $700,000 from the scheme for themselves.
Federal prosecutors also indicted four Chinese nationals and two Taiwanese nationals for alleged roles in the operation.

South Korea's former president Yoon defies summons in martial law probe

SEOUL (Reuters) -Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol skipped questioning on Tuesday by a special prosecutor investigating his December declaration of martial law, citing the need to prepare for a later hearing despite the risk of arrest. Yoon was ousted in April by the Constitutional Court, which upheld his impeachment by parliament for a martial law bid that shocked a country that had prided itself on becoming a thriving democracy after overcoming military dictatorship in the 1980s. Through his lawyers, Yoon, a powerful former top prosecutor elected president in 2022, has accused the special counsel of going on a politically-motivated "witch hunt," describing as illegal some of the tactics used against him. On Monday, Yoon's lawyers said July 5 was the earliest he would be able to appear, citing a trial court hearing on insurrection charges set for Thursday that he must attend and his rights as a defendant to rest and prepare. A spokesperson for the special prosecutor's team did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Media reported the team has said it will issue another summons for this week. Yoon has been locked in an unprecedented wrangle with authorities over the investigation by the special counsel appointed in June, which ratcheted up prior efforts by state prosecutors and police to investigate his martial law attempt. During Yoon's first appearance on Saturday, questioning was interrupted for several hours after he objected to procedures he said violated his rights. The special prosecutor has said the team would consider action under the criminal code, which analysts and media say probably means an arrest, though the team did not confirm that. Analysts and some members of Yoon's conservative People Power Party have questioned his intentions, since he was a lead prosecutor in the 2017 graft investigation and prosecution of former President Park Geun-hye. Two other special prosecutors were appointed in June to sift accusations of wrongdoing by Yoon's wife and obstruction by the presidential office of an investigation into the death of a marine in 2023. Businessman in Sabah graft case says he's a small fry

KOTA KINABALU: Two Sabah assemblymen, who have been charged with corruption along with a businessman, have vowed to clear their names in court following what they called 'intense humiliation in the media'. Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob (Sinduman) and Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy (Tanjung Batu) said they are determined to prove their innocence and restore their reputations through the legal system. The two, along with Selangor-based businessman Datuk Albert Tei Jiann Cheing, 37, appeared before judge Jason Juga to face separate charges under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 yesterday. All three pleaded not guilty at the Special Corruption Court to charges of receiving and giving bribes totalling RM350,000 in relation to mineral prospecting licence applications. According to the charge sheets, Dr Yusof, 69, who is also the Qhazanah Sabah Bhd chairman, allegedly received RM200,000 in cash from Tei on March 6, 2023, at 2pm at a hotel restaurant here as inducement to facilitate the approval of a prospecting licence for Nusa Kini Sdn Bhd to explore minerals in Sabah. Andi, 44, was accused of accepting RM150,000 in cash from Tei on May 12, 2023, outside his residence here for assisting with the prospecting licence application of Sinaran Hayat Sdn Bhd. Tei, meanwhile, was charged with giving bribes to both assemblymen in relation to the same licence applications. All three face jail terms of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Juga fixed Aug 5 for mention and granted all the accused bail. The two assemblymen were each released on court bail of RM50,000, with RM10,000 deposited under one local surety, while Tei was released on RM60,000 bail, with RM15,000 deposited under one local surety, for both charges. They were also instructed to report to the nearest MACC office once every two months and surrender their passports to the court. All three paid the bail. Asked about his position as Assistant Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister, Andi declined to comment. 'Let's just wait for instructions,' he said. Tei, meanwhile, claimed he was a 'small fry' caught in a net for bigger fish and called for action against the 'sharks' he said 'are still swimming free'. 'I have been charged, but what about the rest? Why only charge the 'ikan bilis' (anchovies) while the sharks are still out there?' he asked. Andi also accused the authorities of sending a 'poisonous signal' to Malaysians by charging him, the whistleblower, instead of protecting him. 'I am not afraid. I will fight this in court,' he said. Tei's lawyer Edward Paul said it was unusual that the complainant in the case was also charged alongside the receivers. He also said they would get former MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya to join their legal team for the case. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutors Rustam Sanip and Nurul Izzati Sapifiee.

It's up to the court: Hajiji

Published on: Tuesday, July 01, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 01, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji said the GRS State Government is committed to ensuring integrity in the administration and management of the Government. Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the State Government is leaving the matter of two assemblymen facing corruption charges to the legal process. 'We respect the law and we will let the legal process take its course. The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) State Government will not interfere in any investigation and legal action on any of its government leaders,' he said in a statement, Monday. He was commenting on Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Tanjung Batu Assemblyman Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandi, who were charged with corruption before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga, here, Monday. On their position in the present government, Hajiji said he would consider this carefully in due course after all relevant information and reports have been received. Hajiji said the GRS State Government is committed to ensuring integrity in the administration and management of the Government. Andi, who is Assistant Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister, and Dr Yusof, who is Qhazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman, have been accused of receiving money from one Dato Tei Jeinn Cheing as an inducement to assist in securing a mineral exploration licence for two companies owned by his (Tei's) business partners. Tei was also charged in the same court for giving bribes (see separate reports on this page). At the Lotud Cultural Festival at Hone Hall in IPGM Kent, Tuaran, earlier, Hajiji urged the people not to be influenced by unverified stories making the rounds in social media. He said with election looming, many untruths are being spread in the social media platforms. 'Do not make the wrong choice, the present State Government has made many achievements in developing Sabah through strategic planning in education, tourism and collaboration with Petronas to get more revenue for the State. 'This election is a major challenge and it is a golden opportunity for the people to choose a government that is not only sensitive to the needs of the people but is also a government that is based on local aspirations,' he said. The Chief Minister also said only during the GRS administration has so much assistance been rendered to students. Never before were Sabah students studying in Peninsula Malaysia able to return to their hometown during all major festivities. 'We want to help lessen the burden of our students,' he said. Hajiji said investments have been coming into Sabah so much so the Sabah Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip) in Sipitang is now fully occupied. The latest is a Singapore-based company which is bringing in RM19.5 billion total investments in three phases, he said, adding that in the first phase alone, the project required some 8,000 jobs. 'This is our aspiration to create jobs for the people of Sabah,' he said. The Chief Minister also lauded the initiative of the organiser of the BBKWDDP Lotud Cultural Festival to help preserve the Lotud community's culture and tradition. 'The State Government fully supports such initiatives that strengthen cultural values and empower youth through heritage and cultural activities,' he said. Hajiji reiterated his hope for the Dusun Lotud to become a progressive race and be at par with other communities in the State. The BBKWDDP Lotud Cultural Festival involved seven villages: Batangan, Barus, Korompitut, Wokok, Dungang 1, Dugang 2 and Pendamai. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
