among friends: Milan's premier art fair miart will celebrate closeness

Euronews19-02-2025

Milan's renowned modern and contemporary art fair – and Italy's largest, by exhibitor numbers – miart has revealed the plans for its 2025 edition.
Running from 4-6 April as a driving force within Milan Art Week, miart's 29th edition will showcase 179 galleries from 30 countries across five continents, bringing together more than a century's worth of art under one roof.
Under the artistic direction of Ricciardi, miart 2025 will present works from the 20th century through to today, spanning three main sections: Established, Emergent, and Portal. Art lovers will find everything from early modern masterpieces to cutting-edge contemporary pieces, with a special emphasis on the Italian artists who played a crucial role in shaping Milan's cultural legacy.
International heavyweights participating in the Established section include Victoria Miro (London, Venice), MASSIMODECARLO (Milan, London, Hong Kong,Paris, Beijing), Ben Brown Fine Arts (London, Hong Kong, Venice), and Meyer Riegger (Berlin, Karlsruhe, Basel, Seoul). Curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, Emergent, on the other hand, showcases the latest generation of artists, featuring 25 galleries from across the globe.
Portal, curated for the first time by Alessio Antoniolli – Director of Triangle Network in London and curator at Fondazione Memmo in Rome – will, as Ricciardi tells Euronews Culture feature ten galleries, 'each presenting a monographic project that transcends disciplinary, temporal, and spatial boundaries' in order to 'unveil hidden narratives and explore new creative territories'.
The title of the 2025 edition of miart, among friends, Ricciardi explains, stands as a tribute to the legacy of Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008), marking the centenary of his birth. It also reflects the core values of his work: 'openness to the world, interdisciplinarity, and commitment to dialogue and collaboration'.
'Embracing the approach of the American artist, the fair aims, for its 29th edition, to energise the network of relationships built over the years, positioning itself as a driving force behind an ideal festival of contemporary arts for the city – that is, the Milano Art Week,' Ricciardi says.
This commitment is reflected in a series of initiatives that celebrate "friendship" in the art world, 'understood as an equal, reciprocal, and genuinely supportive relationship among all the stakeholders in the art system'. For Ricciardi, this includes 'the fair, the institutions, galleries, artists, curators, collectors.'
Among these initiatives is 'Rauschenberg e il Novecento' at the Museo del Novecento, which will explore Rauschenberg's legacy, linking his work to key Italian movements like Futurism and Arte Povera. Also bringing the theme to life will be the exhibition 'John Giorno: a Labour of LOVE at Triennale Milano', which will shine a light on American poet and performer John Giorno (1936–2019) and explore traces of his deep friendships and collaborations with major figures from 20th-century art, literature, and music, including Robert Rauschenberg, Keith Haring, Patti Smith, and Andy Warhol.

John Varvatos releases new collab with John Lennon estate

American designer brand John Varvatos has released a new collaboration with the John Lennon estate, the latest step in the house's rapid renewal. 'The collaboration fuses fashion and music — paying homage to the legend with graphic shirts, suiting and outerwear,' the New York label said in a release. The collection references the iconic image of Lennon photographed on a Manhattan rooftop wearing a graphic New York City black and white T-shirt with cut-out short sleeves, which trumpeted his love for his adopted city. The updated version is made in khaki green, not white like the original. There's also a really cool knit, overprinted with a famed photo of the rocker at his Steinway Model Z white piano, used when recording the Beatles' White Album. Or a crisp linen shirt with a spidery penciled self-portrait by the Liverpool -born rockstar. The collaboration comes some 45 years after the tragic assassination of Lennon outside The Dakota apartment building on the Upper East Side, where he lived. The Lennon launch comes before the opening of a new 3,200-square-foot John Varvatos store on Wooster Street in Soho on September 10, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the fashion brand's first store in the downtown district. Greek-born, Michigan-raised, Varvatos was the key menswear designer for both Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein before launching his own brand in 1999. After several changes of ownership and major problems during the pandemic, the brand — sans designer John Varvatos — was taken over by Lion Capital, which also controls All Saints. According to recent financial statements, the John Varvatos label posted annual sales of $86 million in 2023.

Fendi chooses Aitana as the muse for new campaign

The Italian fashion house strengthens its ties with Spain. Following the appointment of Spaniard Ramon Ros as CEO, Fendi continues to strengthen its ties with the country with the signing of Barcelona singer and actress Aitana Ocaña as the face of its latest campaign. As part of the collaboration, the Catalan has starred in the promotional video for the brand's latest collection, which shows Aitana discovering some of the items in the capsule, including her Peekaboo baguette bag, while her single "Segundo Intento", included in her new album "Cuarto azul", plays in the background. The campaign is now available on the official Instagram accounts of the singer and the luxury brand. This is not Aitana's first foray into the fashion universe. The singer, who rose to fame in 2017 thanks to her participation in the ninth edition of the musical contest Operación Triunfo, signed at the end of 2020 a contract with the German sporting goods manufacturer Adidas, becoming an official ambassador of the brand during this year. Founded in 1925 by Adele and Edoardo Fendi originally as a store in Rome, the Italian firm specializing in fashion, handbags and leather goods joined the portfolio of French luxury giant LVMH in 2000. Among the latest developments at Fendi was the departure of Kim Jones from the house last October, after taking the reins of its women's ready-to-wear and couture creative direction in September 2020, following the death of Karl Lagerfeld.

Ossou, a new RTW brand with luxe denim DNA, launches in New York City

Regarding American sportswear, nothing can deny the everlasting style of T-shirts and jeans. It is a closet staple look that prevails across all interpretations of fashion, not least of which is the chic set. Enter Ossou, a new ready-to-wear label founded by Fforme co-founder Nina Khosla and Talia Shuvalov, whose CV includes names such as Alexander McQueen and Alexander Wang, where she led creative direction across ready-to-wear, denim, accessories and jewelry. The duo are co-creative directors of the new brand, which borrows its name from the Latin word for bones. Fforme CEO Joey Laurenti also leads the new label. Two years in the making, the concept was unveiled in New York City, where spoke to the designers and the brand's CEO about reinventing the ubiquitous material into a high-end polished collection and expanding the design vocabulary for the humble material. For Khosla, daughter of Sun Microsystems co-founder and tech billionaire Vinod Khosla, the exercise at hand was to answer a query: 'How do we elevate denim, and how do we answer the question of what luxury denim looks like that's still authentic and feels truly like denim?' Khosla posited, adding, 'Denim is very much the design of archetypes, right? So, we want details we design to live on and to keep living in the denim as we evolve and grow.' Shuvalov pointed out exhibit A: custom-designed hardware such as the silver- and gold-tone button with a thumbprint design, created by industrial designer David Caon, used on pants and jackets. A chic custom zipper pull and bi-color zipper are also part of the brand's DNA. This tracks as Shuvalov also leads a jewelry line, Erede. 'The pants, jackets and everything we do come from a ready-to-wear place. They're tailored patterns with tailored construction details, just cut with denim as the material. The wash is minimal so that we can focus on the material. We're not trying to over-process because that's a big part of the denim sector,' Shuvalov explained. 'We looked from a luxury perspective but with materiality at the forefront, we focused on something durable with longevity to live with the wear throughout time. Denim is such a quintessentially American fabrication. What's beautiful about denim is that when worn and vintage, it holds intrinsic value, wears in and creates its own mark over time that lasts a lifetime. We wanted to give denim minimal treatment and wash,' Shuvalov added. The line features silk indigo denim that drapes similarly to fabrics traditionally used for suiting; woven color wash as opposed to garment dyeing; tan denim with an essence of linen khaki on a pair of louche, drop-pocket barrel-leg pants; black denim so deep it is almost mistaken for wool. Oversize trench coats and medium car coats are cinched with exquisite quality leather belts with elongated straps. Auxiliary pieces include thick cotton T-shirts, crisp woven shirting and more traditional denim blue five-pocket styles and jean jackets. Given the upscale designs and draping versus typical denim silhouettes, the collection offers a new proposition between jeans and tailored clothing. However, the timing for a new venture in a shaky economic environment due to political and social upheaval can be daunting. Joey Laurenti, CEO, formerly of Sies Marjan and Opening Ceremony and founder of Good and Services, a now-shuttered wholesale showroom entity that merged with Tomorrow Ltd., identifies Ossou's target as 'the luxury consumer who is looking for foundational wardrobe pieces to pair back to designer pieces.' On the selling floor, Ossou aims to position itself next to Khaite, Loewe and Toteme. Retail prices range from $295 to $1,295. 'Everyone loves jeans and our price point speaks to a pretty broad audience. The brand straddles the line between true luxury and emerging designer — a sweet spot in my professional experience,' said the CEO. The brand launched as DTC through its website but aims to build its wholesale business equally when it introduces itself to the market later in June. Retail partners are expected to be secured in the coming months. Laurenti is matter-of-fact about the current dodgy nature of fashion and retail. 'Of course, we are in the middle of a difficult climate but there are always peaks and valleys and it's never a perfect time to launch a brand. Price value was always paramount when we developed the business plan for Ossou," he noted, adding, "Ninety percent of the collection retails below $1,000 while the quality and sensibility could command much higher retail prices. We will have the opportunity to build a brand and scale it quickly as things pick up — as they always do.'
