4 to be sentenced in Knysna for killing woman over life policies
Four people will be sentenced today after being found guilty of a planned murder involving three life policies taken out on the life of Nomdundu Mafani of KwaNokuthula, Plettenberg Bay.
According to Knysna-Plett Herald, Mafani was shot 15 times in a house in Cuba Street on April 29, 2022.
The payment for the 'hit' on Mafani was R40 000.
The high court sitting in Knysna found Mboneleli Msila, Mbulelo Jack, Monde Tshemese and Lungisile Lucas, all from KwaNokuthula, guilty on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, ruling that Mafani's murder was planned.
Tshemese was also found guilty of the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Brakpan cops rescue boy (4) abandoned in cold after hijacking
A tense search for a four-year-old boy kidnapped during a hijacking on Wednesday evening ended in a happy reunion. Brakpan Herald reports that with help from local security teams and CPF patrollers, Brakpan police officers found the child unharmed. Local SAPS rural safety and sector managers Sergeant Phatudi Mashifane and Constable Zunaid Rustoff were patrolling along the R23 (Heidelberg Road), a notorious hijacking hotspot, when at around 23:00, they came across a family that had been hijacked and kidnapped by three armed men in Kempton Park. The couple had been left stranded in their vehicle. 'They told the SAPS members that the men left them inside their hijacked VW Polo GTI after the vehicle ran out of petrol on the R23 towards Tsakani, not far from a petrol station,' says Constable Audrey Buthelezi, Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer. 'The couple was frantic. They informed the officers that one of the hijackers had left with their four-year-old boy. 'The two SAPS members called for backup and started searching the area for the missing child and suspects. 'While searching, the SAPS members and personnel from private security companies were calling out for the child with hope that the child would respond if he heard them. 'The boy responded to one officer's voice, and he was found in the wet and icy bushes alone and unharmed.' The child was reunited with his parents, and the search continued for the suspects. With the assistance of a drone, the suspect who left with the child was located in the bushes near Dalpark Ext 1. 'The victims positively identified the suspect as the one who left with the boy. The 28-year-old was immediately arrested and detained at the Brakpan Police Station, charged with hijacking and kidnapping.' He was expected to appear in court within 48 hours. Brakpan SAPS Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo applauded the outstanding rescue efforts of the police members, the CPF patrollers and private security companies. He further commended the officers for their dedication and vigilance, and their efforts to combat crime. The security companies involved were Secure Tech Security, CP Security and Graphite Security. Image: Supplied A Western Cape stepfather who hired hitmen to kill his adopted daughter has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The High Court of South Africa: Western Cape Division sitting in Knysna convicted and sentenced Mboneleli Msila, who masterminded the plan to kill his disabled daughter so that he could benefit from three funeral policies amounting to R600,000. The victim, 23-year-old Nosipho Mafana, was shot 15 times in April 2022. She was adopted by Msila and his wife when she was 11 years old. Msila hired hitmen Mbulelo Jack, Monde Tshemese, and Lungisile Lucas to carry out the hit. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Msila received a double life sentence- one for murder and the other for conspiracy to commit murder. Tshemese, who carried out the hit, also received two life sentences, as well as five years for illegal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Jack and Lucas were sentenced to 17 years' direct imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder and a further 17 years for murder. The court ordered their sentences to run concurrently, meaning they will each serve 17 years effectively. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the court found that the group had orchestrated a detailed plan, assigning specific roles to each man in a plot fuelled by greed and financial gain. "The well-orchestrated plan began in April 2021, when Mfana, under Msila's instruction, took out a R100,000 funeral policy with Standard Bank. The policy would pay out R200,000 in the event of an unnatural death. Msila was the beneficiary of this funeral policy," said Ntabazalila. In February 2022, another policy worth R200,000 was taken out with FNB, this time with Msila's sister-in-law listed as the beneficiary. A third policy with Capitec was also increased from R50,000 to R100,000 in March 2022, with his wife as the beneficiary. To execute the killing, Msila first approached his neighbour, offering him R40,000 and a firearm to commit the murder. Jack and Tshemese entered the lounge where Mafana was sleeping on a mattress next to two other young women. Jack identified Mafana, and Tshemese opened fire, shooting her 15 times. Lucas stood guard outside. "The plan fell apart when a tin collector observed the three men when they entered the yard. He saw Lucas standing guard in the yard, and the other two men entered the house. He knew the three men as they lived in the area. He saw flashes of light like firecrackers from the house," said Ntabazalila. "He also observed the men leaving the house after numerous shots were fired. He reported the shooting incident to the investigating officer, whom he knew. He identified Jack and Lucas through a photographic identification exercise. He also took the investigating officer to Tshemese's residence and pointed him out." Msila submitted a claim to Standard Bank following Mafana's death, but the payout was blocked pending an investigation. However, FNB and Capitec paid out R200,000 each to Msila's sister-in-law and wife. Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Adv. Nicolette Bell commended the prosecution team and the police for their work, calling the crime 'barbaric.' 'The cruelty accused one showed in putting together the assassination plan, her funeral policy money, and the participants in that plan for their greedy benefit is indicative of the sick society we live in,' said Ntabazalila. 'Our responsibility is to live up to the challenge and ensure that we send each accused who is involved in such barbaric plans to prison for a long time.' IOL News

KZN man gets double life sentence for rape and murder of Umkomaas child Justice has been served for Lusanda Nkomo who was raped and murdered in Umkomaas last year. South Coast Herald reports that the Pietermaritzburg High Court, sitting in Port Shepstone, handed down a double life sentence to Rogers Perumal (57) for these crimes. Perumal lived in the same area as the child, and they knew each other. On March 17 last year, Perumal's dog went missing. While conducting a search in the neighbourhood, Nkomo joined him as she was fond of the dog. 'When they got to a bushy area, Perumal raped the child,' says Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KZN spokesperson. 'He then assaulted her all over her body and strangled her before fleeing the scene.' When the child did not return home that day, community members searched for her throughout the day and night. The next day, her lifeless body was found. Investigations were carried out, and as Perumal was the last person she was seen with, he was arrested. Angered locals ransacked Perumal's house and set his belongings alight on the day of his arrest. He abandoned bail on March 20 at the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court. At his sentencing last week, Advocate Mziwodumo Miza led the evidence of witnesses who saw Perumal walking with the child in the direction where her body was found. He also led DNA evidence linking Perumal to the DNA material found on the child. A victim impact statement compiled by the child's mother and facilitated by court preparation officer Beaufort Shinga, was handed in. Perumal was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment each, for the rape and murder. The court also ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. His application for leave to appeal against both convictions and sentences was subsequently refused. 'This sentence underscores the seriousness with which the justice system treats crimes against the most vulnerable members of our society,' says Ramkisson-Kara. 'The NPA remains resolute in its pursuit of justice for victims of gender-based violence and child abuse, and will continue to ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are removed from society and face the harshest possible consequences. Justice has been served, and the rights and dignity of our children protected.' Nkomo was described as a bubbly and energetic child.
