Kerry GAA chiefs increasingly confident Jack O'Connor will remain as manager
Kerry GAA decision-makers are becoming increasingly confident that Jack O'Connor will remain as the Kingdom's senior football manager. A county board meeting will take place next Tuesday with the expectation being that a new two-year term for O'Connor will be announced. It is also expected that the Dromid man's current management team of Cian O'Neill, Aodán Mac Gearailt, James Costello, and Pa McCarthy will remain in situ. That team was put together last September after Micheál Quirke and Diarmuid Murphy left in quick succession. Following Kerry's All-Ireland final victory over Donegal last month, O'Connor suggested that the fourth year of what is his third stint as Kerry manager would be his last. He described the win as a "last hurrah" after what had been a "tough" year, adding that he wasn't sure if he could put himself through it once again. However, he added that the immediate aftermath of an All-Ireland final was not the right time to make such a decision and that he would "leave it settle for a couple of weeks". The retired schoolteacher undoubtedly has the support of the Kerry players. David Clifford said this week that the panel would "love" for O'Connor to stay on as manager, adding that he is the "man for the job". Agreeing the deal would give O'Connor the opportunity to achieve a new feat in his time as Kerry manager: winning back-to-back All-Ireland titles. It's 21 years since he won his first against Mayo. Kerry lost the following year's decider to Tyrone before defeating Mayo again in 2006. O'Connor stepped away after that victory with Pat O'Shea leading Kerry to the 2007 title. O'Connor returned to win again in 2009 but Kerry's 2010 championship ended at the quarter-final stage with defeat to Down. He returned for his third spell ahead of the 2022 season, leading the Kingdom to victory over Galway in the final but they lost the 2023 decider to Dublin.

FAI Cup holders Drogheda United to face Shamrock Rovers in quarter-finals
Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic have avoided each other in the FAI Cup quarter-finals with Stephen Bradley's Hoops drawn away to defending champions Drogheda United . St Pat's welcome Galway United to Richmond Park while the remaining Premier Division clubs, Cork City and Sligo Rovers , will expect to progress to the semi-finals. Cork travel to Donegal to face Finn Harps while Kerry host Sligo at Mounthawk Park after John Russell's side knocked Bohemians out of the cup last Friday at Dalymount Park after a goal from teenager Owen Elding. The English-born Elding is currently completing the necessary paper work for Fifa, to make him eligible for Jim Crawford's Republic of Ireland under-21 squad ahead of next month's European Championship qualifiers against Moldova away and Andorra at Tallaght Stadium. READ MORE RTÉ will select two of the last eight matches to be broadcast live on the week ending Sunday, September 14th with the other two ties on LOITV. The final takes place at the Aviva Stadium on November 9th. In the women's FAI Cup semi-final, Shamrock Rovers will play Athlone Town and Treaty United drew Bohemians. Both games will be shown live on TG4. Former Dublin footballer Michael Darragh Macauley steps down as CEO of Sanctuary Runners
The eight-time All-Ireland winner, who has worked for Dublin's Northeast Inner City (NEIC), took over from Sanctuary Runners' founder Graham Clifford a year ago. The former Dublin GAA star will conclude his time with the Sanctuary Runners in the coming weeks. 'I've had an amazing year at the helm of this very positive movement,' Macauley said. 'I've made the difficult decision to move on to other projects, but I am still very committed to the power of community integration through sport. 'Although I will no longer be Chief Executive, I plan to continue to show solidarity in my Sanctuary Blue and I truly value the great friendships I've made all around the country,' he added. Sharing the news on LinkedIn, he said it had been an 'absolute privilege' steering the blue ship for the past year. Sanctuary Runners was named 'Community Organisation of the Year' at this year's Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards under his stewardship. Anna Pringle, Chair of the Board of Sanctuary Runners, said: 'We have been honoured to have Michael Darragh as CEO during an exciting time for Sanctuary Runners where we have expanded our reach in Ireland and internationally. 'Michael Darragh brought a great understanding of community integration with him and built relationships throughout the Sanctuary Runners movement and helped us to grow. 'We wish him the very best in his future career.' The Board of Sanctuary Runners will now launch a recruiting process to appoint a new CEO.
