Guarantee schemes hailed as a boon to women, youth

The Hindu3 days ago

The State government's guarantee schemes are playing a transformative role in empowering women and youth, said vice-president of the State Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority S.R. Mehroz Khan.
Speaking at an event to interact with beneficiaries of Yuva Nidhi scheme at Mahatma Gandhi Auditorium in Gulbarga University on Wednesday, Mr. Khan highlighted the impact of the scheme on youth employment.
'Due to the implementation of Yuva Nidhi, the unemployment rate in the State has dropped to 2.25% from 4.8%,' he said.
He added that these welfare schemes, which cost the government around ₹52,000 crore annually, are unparalleled globally.
'International studies have affirmed that such comprehensive welfare models are rare. These schemes have helped secure the lives of millions of people in Karnataka,' he noted.
Mr. Khan also pointed out that the Shakti scheme has not only supported women's professional journeys but also helped them lead independent lives. As a result of the Shakti and Gruha Lakshmi schemes, women's entrepreneurship in the State has risen to 12%.
Similarly, the Anna Bhagya scheme has alleviated hunger, while free electricity under Gruha Jyothi has further lightened the financial burden on households, he said.
'There are often allegations of corruption in other welfare schemes but the guarantee schemes have been implemented transparently without any misappropriation. Credit for this goes to the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,' Mr. Khan said.
He urged beneficiaries facing technical issues with Yuva Nidhi disbursements to call the toll-free helpline 1800-599-7154 for resolution. He also encouraged youth to take the lead in spreading awareness about these schemes in their communities.
Several beneficiaries shared their experiences during the interaction.
'For the past 11 months, I've been receiving financial support through Yuva Nidhi. It has helped me buy books and attend training to secure employment,' said Shivalingayya.
'Coming from a farming family with limited financial means, the Yuva Nidhi scheme has helped me and my brother undergo job training in Dharwad. Gruha Lakshmi funds are also being received and free electricity under Gruha Jyothi has brightened our home,' said Vijayalakshmi, a postgraduate student.
Nabi, another student, called for gender-inclusive access to the benefits of the Shakti scheme for both male and female students.
'Thanks to the Shakti scheme, I have been able to travel and visit places I never imagined. This free travel is enabling parents to consider higher education for their daughters,' said Pooja, a chemistry student.
Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhanwar Singh Meena urged students to actively participate in extracurricular activities and discussions alongside their studies.
'Success in life is possible through hard work. Make full use of the university campus and library facilities. Yuva Nidhi must be used wisely,' he said.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including District Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority chairperson Chandrika Parameshwari, vice-chairperson Somashekhara Hiremath, Chief Planning Officer S.S. Mathapati, Project Director Jagadeva, Assistant Director of the District Employment Exchange Bharathi, Deputy Director of the Food and Civil Supplies Department Bheemaraya and Gulbarga University Registrar Ramesh Landankar.

'Khan Sir', whose full name is Faizal Khan, runs the Khan GS Research Centre in the city. 'I've seen 'Khan Sir' on YouTube…this young man is doing great job and so many blessings must pour for him out of hearts of poor students who can't afford fees. All my thanks and good wishes to him. May God grant him the power to do greater work so he can create more students like him who serve society with compassion,' Mr. Khan told media persons following the visit. 'One day I'll also come to interact with his students in the institute,' he added, while recalling how a poor student had recently approached him after securing a government job. He wanted to see the classroom and, getting on the stage, he said one day he wants to address students as well. He also said that our culture should be preserved as western culture is dominating India and Indian culture is fading away. We have to preserve our heritage.' 'Every festival should be celebrated with love,' asserted the Governor during his interaction. The Governor and Mr. Khan also discussed the recent case of the rape and death of a minor girl in Muzaffarpur. 'I spoke to the Governor about this…such people (the alleged rapists) should be boycotted but what do you expect when even rapists get good lawyers in the country? I request the lawyers of the country that if all the lawyers unite, so that if someone has committed rape, acid attack, burnt a woman to death, kidnapping, then they will not get a good lawyer. Such incidents should be brought under the category of treason. The Governor was also very concerned about this matter,' Mr. Khan said. Earlier, in the wake of the July 2024 incident in Delhi, where several students died in a flooded basement of an IAS coaching centre, the Patna district administration conducted a survey of coaching institutes in August. The Khan GS Research Centre was among those flagged for violations. 'The number of students at the coaching institute had exceeded the available space,' District Magistrate Shrikant Kundlik Khandelkar had said, adding that under the Bihar Coaching Institute (Control and Regulation) norms, 'it was a violation of the norm.'

Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan's party threatens to launch full-scale movement for his release

A senior leader of incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan has threatened to launch a full-scale movement for his release after Eid Al-Adha if he is not freed before the festival. Ali Amin Gandapur, Chief Minister of the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the prominent leader of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was speaking with media after meeting the PTI supremo at the Adiala Jail near Rawalpindi on Thursday. Khan, 72, has been in jail since August 2023 in multiple cases. His party had organised rallies in the past too demanding his release. 'If we don't see Imran Khan being released before Eid Al-Adha, we reserve the right to protest. We are moving towards a movement by bringing the people on the street against Khan's unjustified and unfair detention in fake cases,' Gandapur said. 'The nation must awaken and now it is time to release him from jail. We will no longer tolerate slavery. When we protested from time to time,' he said in response to a question. Gandapur stated that the PTI will make every possible effort and 'we will act swiftly,' as the country is being destroyed by the decisions of those 'who have seized power.' Gandapur termed Khan's continued imprisonment as 'a grave injustice,' and expressed frustration over the government's refusal to allow free dialogue with their incarcerated party leader. He also pointed out how the judiciary has lost its independence, particularly after the 26th constitutional amendment. 'There's no hope left from the judiciary. If the courts were truly independent, we would be seeing free and fair decisions.' Gandapur also condemned the prolonged detention of Khan's wife Bushra Bibi, who he claimed, has been kept under house arrest for 14 months 'without justification.'
