Lady Gaga Performs to Record-Breaking Crowd at Rio's Copacabana Beach
Lady Gaga performed to a record-breaking crowd Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, as an estimated 2.5 million people attended the singer's free concert on Copacabana Beach. The gig in Brazil marked the highest attended concert by a female artist in history, according to the singer's reps, eclipsing the 1.6 million people Madonna drew to the same venue last year. More from Rolling Stone Brazil Police Reveal Thwarted Bomb Attack Targeting Lady Gaga's Rio Concert Katy Perry Attends Lady Gaga Concert in Mexico City: 'So Proud of You' Lady Gaga Adds Seven Shows to Mayhem Ball Tour 'Tonight, we're making history … Thank you for making history with me,' Lady Gaga told the crowd, which included over a million Brazilians as well as a reported 500,000 Little Monsters who flew in for the special show, which injected over $100 million into Rio's economy, NPR reported. The record holder for largest concert crowd in history — according to Guinness World Records — remains Rod Stewart, who attracted a crowd of over 4 million to Copacabana Beach on New Year's Eve in 1994. The Copacabana Beach concert marked Lady Gaga's first concert in Brazil since 2012. 'I've missed you so much,' she told an enormous crowd that gathered the previous night just to watch her soundcheck. 'I know that this is not the first show here. I know this is just a rehearsal; it feels like it's the real show.' The concert itself found Gaga replicating the five-act 'gothic opera' that she performed during her headlining sets at Coachella and other Mayhem Ball stops thus far. She'll next travel to Singapore for four shows in that country later this month before the North American arena leg of the Mayhem Ball tour begins in July. Rio de Janeiro's tourism department previously announced plans to continue staging free Copacabana Beach concerts until at least 2028. Green Day Rocks Back To No. 1
Green Day's Saviors returns to No. 1 on the U.K.'s Official Rock & Metal Albums chart after the ... More deluxe edition drops, giving fans new music. (Photo by Frederic J. Brown / AFP) (Photo by FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP via Getty Images) It's been almost a year and a half since Green Day released its most recent album Saviors, but fans are clearly still excited about the project. The pop-punk legends recently dropped the highly-anticipated deluxe edition of the set, which they'd been promoting for months with new tunes. Sales of the title grew dramatically, and this week the Grammy winner's latest full-length returns to multiple rankings and even brings the band back to the top spot on one tally in the United Kingdom. Saviors reappears at No. 1 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart this week. The full-length hadn't been seen on this list since January, when it spent two frames in the lower reaches of the top 40 before disappearing. Last week's champion, Will You Haunt Me, with That Same Patience by Bury Tomorrow, descends dramatically, dipping from No. 1 to No. 26 in just its second frame on the tally. Now that it's back at No. 1, Saviors earns just its second stay in the penthouse on the list of the top-selling rock and metal releases in the U.K. Green Day debuted the project atop the tally in early February 2024. The set attempted to earn more time on the throne, living in the runner-up space for the next month, but it was unable to lead again until the release of its deluxe edition. Saviors only manages to reenter the top 10 on one of the five U.K.-based rankings where it finds a home at the moment. It returns this frame to each of them, after not appearing on any of the rosters just days ago. The set breaks back into the top 20 on the Official Physical Albums, Official Albums Sales, and Official Vinyl Albums charts, appearing at Nos. 13, 14, and 19, respectively. The title doesn't perform nearly as well when it comes to purchases on platforms like iTunes, as Saviors finds its way back to the Official Album Downloads roster, but only at No. 45. In the past, Saviors has reached No. 1 on each and every one of the charts on which it appears in the United Kingdom. It has understandably spent the most time on the Official Rock & Metal Albums list, racking up 39 frames. It has yet to manage 20 appearances on any of the other rosters.
