Police shoot man who held mother at knifepoint in the Bronx, NYPD says
Police said a security guard called 911 after hearing screams from the family's apartment in on Mulford Avenue in Pelham Bay.
Officers arrived around 11:20 p.m. and found the 34-year-old man with his left arm around his 61-year-old mother's neck and a large kitchen knife in his right hand, police said.
"Our officers engaged the male in dialog and attempted to de-escalate the situation. For over two and a half minutes, our officers attempted to get the male to put the knife down and free his mother," NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said on the scene.
A man was shot by police late Thursday night in the Bronx after the NYPD says he threatened his mother with this knife.

Police said the man threatened his mother while moving the knife toward her neck.
"As our officers were attempting this, the male made numerous threats to kill his mother, all while he was still holding her with his arm around her neck and holding the knife," said Rivera. "Numerous times during this interaction, the male moved the knife towards his mother's neck."
Police said their attempts to get him to drop the knife were unsuccessful, and an officer ended up firing one round, striking the man and freeing his mother.
The suspect was rushed to Jacobi Hospital where he remains in critical condition. His mother was not injured.
Police said the entire incident was captured on body-worn cameras and will be handled by the Force Investigation Division. They also released a photo of the knife recovered from the scene.

Islam was the first to be struck inside the lobby, where the suspect shot several other people before heading to the elevator. On the 33rd floor, the suspect shot another person and then himself. Islam, 36, was a three-and-a-half-year veteran of the department and an immigrant from Bangladesh. During his funeral at a Bronx mosque three days later, New York's police commissioner promoted Islam to detective, as thousands of officers and mourners lined the streets. Since the deadly shooting, two online fundraisers on behalf of Islam's family have raised nearly $500,000 to help care for Islam's wife and three sons. A GoFundMe has raised nearly $80,000, while another fundraiser by several law enforcement and NYPD organizations has received more than $416,000. The son of a New York City police detective murdered in the July mass shooting at a Manhattan office building was born over the weekend, the NYPD said Monday. Detective Didarul Islam's widow Jamila gave birth to the couple's new baby boy, Arham, their third son, on Sunday, the department shared on social media. Islam was off-duty working security at 345 Park Avenue when a gunman stormed the building in Midtown on July 28. Four people were killed and another was wounded before the shooter turned the gun on himself, police said. The 36-year-old was born in Bangladesh and moved to the United States as a child. His family said it was his dream to join the NYPD. "He always wanted to be a police officer to serve his community, to serve the people around him, and set a better example for his kids," Zamilur Rahman, Islam's cousin, told CBS News New York. The couple has two other boys, Ahyan and Azhaan, ages 4 and 7. "Together, they will carry forward their father's legacy of service and courage — a legacy the NYPD will guard and uphold with the same devotion Didar gave to this city. Jamila, Ahyan, Azhaan, and now, Arham will forever be part of the NYPD family," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote. The wife of slain New York Police Officer Didarul Islam, one of five people fatally shot at a midtown Manhattan high-rise last month, has given birth to a son, police announced Monday. Arham became the third child of Didarul and Jamila Islam, and they're all boys, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement Monday afternoon. "Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world," she said. "Arham joins his two big brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan. Together, they will carry forward their father's legacy of service and courage." Mayor Eric Adams said he was with members of Islam's family at the hospital when Jamila was in labor Sunday. "I know how special Arham's birth is for this family that is still dealing with heartbreak after losing their hero," he said on X."Our entire city stands with them and is here to support them." Islam, 36, was working in the lobby of the 44-story building on Park Avenue in New York City on July 28 when, police say, 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas walked in and immediately opened fire using a semiautomatic rifle. Tisch said afterward that Islam was working in the lobby of the building with the department's permission under a program that allows officers to provide security off-duty but in uniform. On Monday she noted his formal title: Detective First Grade Didarul Islam. Adams said on MSNBC last month that Islam was the first Bangladesh-born NYPD officer to be killed in the line of duty. After the attack Adams said that those who knew the officer said he 'believed in living out the life of a godly person.' Tamura also shot a security guard and two civilians in the building before fatally shooting himself, authorities said. Adams said Tamura, who completed a cross-country drive just prior to the attack, was trying to target the headquarters of the NFL, which has offices in the Park Avenue building, but entered the wrong set of elevator banks and never made it to the league's offices. Two officials familiar with the matter told NBC News that the shooter, who played football in high school in Southern California, left a note at the scene that said he wanted his brain studied for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. The neurodegenerative disorder associated with head injuries can cause changes in behavior and cognition and has been diagnosed in hundreds of NFL players after their deaths. Tamura, who never made it to the NFL, had a "documented mental health history," Las Vegas police said. Muhammad Mainul Islam, who identified himself as Didarul Islam's cousin, told NBC New York the officer was dedicated to providing for his family and raising his children. 'When he had time, and especially his off days, he went to the mosque with his two kids,' he said. Islam was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, said after the attack: 'He went out every single day to provide for his family, whether it was overtime or whatever he had to do." Tisch said in her statement Monday that the newborn, his mother and his brothers are part of the NYPD fabric.
