AP, T & 3 states account for over 50% of India's female sex workers

Hyderabad: As India fights to shed its HIV burden — currently third highest in the world — the latest Programmatic Mapping and Population Size Estimation (PMPSE) study has found that Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have among the highest concentration of female sex workers — per hotspot — in the country. Overall, though, Karnataka emerged at the top of the charts with 15.4% of India's total FSW population. It was followed by Andhra Pradesh (12%), Maharashtra (9.6%), Delhi (8.9%), and Telangana (7.6%). Together, these five states accounted for over half (53%) of India's estimated 9,95,499 female sex workers. The study, published in PLOS Global Health, covered 651 districts across 32 states and UTs. Led by Pradeep Kumar of the National AIDS Control Society, it calls for periodic, community-led PMPSE to enable responsive public health strategies. The mapping exercise identified 43,579 FSW hotspots across India with presence of FSWs in 642 districts, including 34 with over 5,000 FSWs. AP was found to have five such districts, and Telangana six. FSWs were also reported in 16,095 villages. Telangana recorded the highest concentration of FSWs per hotspot — 38 per location —followed by AP with 29. In contrast, most states had a lower density, averaging 8 FSWs per hotspot nationally. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Descubra ofertas de voos imperdíveis Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Home-based sex work dominated the landscape, accounting for 55.1% of all FSW hotspots. Around 14% of FSWs were found operating exclusively through 10,718 network operators, and 9% in Link Worker Scheme (LWS) villages. There were as many as 568 mapped network operators in Telangana, one of the highest in the country. In AP, each LWS village had an average of 10 FSWs operating exclusively within the village, while in Telangana, it was 8. The PMPSE also underscored Telangana's transgender (H/TG) individuals per hotspot —around 25 — again the highest in India. It surpassed Delhi (24), Gujarat (21), AP and Maharashtra (20 each). Although Delhi had the highest overall H/TG population (18.6%), Telangana stood out for its concentrated presence at identified locations. Nationally, 96,193 H/TG individuals were estimated, with 90.8% found at hotspots. Telangana's share came from fewer mapped hotspots but with higher density. In total, 6,585 H/TG hotspots were identified, with key informant data gathered from 15,231 individuals within the community. For men who have sex with men (MSM), Telangana reported the highest density again —50 MSM per hotspot — followed by Delhi (29) and Goa (27). Though AP contributed 6.3% to the national MSM population, Telangana's role in terms of hotspot concentration points to a more complex landscape of risk.

Gorakhpur dist jail inmates get open gym facility

1 2 3 Gorakhpur: To promote physical fitness and mental well-being among inmates, an open gym was inaugurated at the Gorakhpur District Jail recently. The facility was launched under the government guidelines and aligns with the wellness goals outlined by the Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (UPSLSA), Lucknow, said Jailer AK Kushwaha on Sunday. The gym was formally inaugurated by Additional District Judge and secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Pankaj Srivastava. Officials present at the event underscored the significance of regular exercise and yoga in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The jailer said that of the 2,000 inmates currently lodged in the jail, around 1,000 will be able to use the open gym facility. The remaining inmates are either elderly, unwell, or housed under high-security restrictions. A roster is being prepared to schedule exercise slots for inmates during morning and evening hours. On the inaugural day, 100 inmates participated in yoga sessions at the open gym. While there are 100 women inmates in the facility, they are currently unable to access the gym due to the absence of a dedicated boundary wall. "Once the boundary is constructed, women inmates will also be allowed to use the open gym," the jailer added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo In the meantime, female inmates continue to practice yoga within the women's barrack. As part of the UPSLSA's action plan, a surprise inspection of the jail was also conducted by Pankaj Srivastava. He inspected the kitchen, school, newly constructed women's barrack, men's barracks, hospital, and the Legal Aid Clinic. The jail superintendent was instructed to maintain hygiene and resolve prisoners' grievances without delay. Additionally, a Lok Adalat was held on the premises, where 11 cases were settled on the spot by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Bhagwan Das Gupta. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by jail superintendent D K Pandey.

Ayushman enrolments see dip as private hospitals back off over rates, delays

Ayushman enrolments see dip as private hospitals back off over rates, delays (Picture credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: Empanelment of hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat-PM Jan Arogya Yojana has dropped significantly, from an average of 316 per month in 2024 to 111 per month in 2025, as of April. Data shared by National Health Authority (NHA) on scheme's dashboard shows that 443 hospitals were empanelled under the AB-PMJAY across India in four months - 161 in Jan, 187 in Feb, 40 in March and 55 in April. In May, the latest update shows, 20 hospitals were empanelled. Many healthcare associations point out that low package rates and delayed payments are key reasons behind the lukewarm response to government schemes from the private sector, especially large corporate hospital chains. However, a senior official of NHA - the implementing agency of the AB-PMJAY - said empanelment is taking place and that some of the new empanelments may not have been updated as they were migrating to a new system. AB-PMJAY, which is available in all states/UTs, except West Bengal, offers treatment worth Rs 5 lakh and, in some cases, more, per family for treatment of nearly 2,000 procedures involving specialties, including medical oncology (cancer treatment), emergency care, orthopaedic and urology (kidney-related ailments). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The CEO of a top hospital chain in Delhi, the latest state to join the scheme, told TOI that package rates offered for various procedures under the AB-PMJAY were lower than their input cost. "We may join the scheme if the package rates are increased," he said. The Indian Medical Association has also stressed on the need to increase package rates to make treatment under the scheme more sustainable. "The rates should be raised to at least CGHS level," said an IMA office-bearer. As many as 609 private hospitals have opted out of the scheme since 2018, minister of state for health Prataprao Jadhav said in a written response to a Parliament question in March. "The reasons for hospitals voluntarily opting out include empanelment only for Covid period, hospitals were closed or non-functional, changes in hospital entity, hospital relocated, ongoing reconstruction or renovation, unavailability of specialist doctors, voluntary withdrawal from scheme, package rates, opting out due to certain treatment packages reserved for public hospitals only (Chhattisgarh and Gujarat), and no referral from public hospitals (Karnataka)," he added.
