High street chain launches 50% off closing down sales at three more branches ahead of 26 shops shutting

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE Original Factory Shop has announced it is shutting three more stores and has launched huge closing down sales. The bargain chain has been closing stores across the UK as part of a major restructure. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The Original Factory Shop has announced it is closing three more locations Credit: Alamy The company has already shuttered several stores this year and has announced more closures in the coming weeks. Among those set to close is its store in Chard, which announced in a Facebook post that it will be closing for good on September 7. The post told customers: 'We are sorry to let you know… This store is closing. Thank you to our wonderful colleagues for your support throughout our time here in the local community.' The shop has launched a huge closing down sale, with all items now 50% off. Customers have taken to social media to share their disappointment that the store is set to close. One customer said: 'So sorry to hear that you are closing, you are all great staff, you all helped me when I was not very well in your shop thank you all again xx.' Another said: 'Shame to hear, great bunch of staff always happy and helpful.' A third added: 'What a shame, sorry to hear this.' Two other stores have also announced they will be closing. One of them is the shop in Whitchurch, Shropshire, which will close its doors for good in the coming weeks. In a post on its Facebook page it said: 'We're sadly closing our doors, but that means big savings for you. 'All stock is reduced to clear - grab up to 50% off the original price.' Devastated customers also commented on the post, as one said: 'Thank you so much for your service throughout the 11 years we've lived in Whitchurch. 'I'm absolutely gutted that you're closing down and wish you all better luck in your next jobs.' The store announced the closure in a similar Facebook post and said: 'We'll soon be closing the store and would like to take this time to thank all of our customers at Mexborough store. "We have loved serving you and being part of the local community.' They added: 'We hope you will pop in to see us before we close.' The news comes after The Original Factory Shop announced it is shutting three more locations. The shop in Caldicot, Wales, closed for good last week. The store in Market Drayton, Shropshire will also shut its doors for the last time on September 20. Plus The Original Factory Shop in Nairn, Scotland, has also been earmarked for closure. Meanwhile, at least four The Original Factory stores closed last month. Among them was the shop in Staveley, Chesterfield, which shut its doors for good on July 12. The shops in Caernarfon, Wales, and Bridlington, Yorkshire, closed down on July 20. Plus a final store, in Cupar, Fife, was shuttered on July 27. In total, 26 shops have closed or are set to shut this year. The Original Factory Shop did not respond to our request for comment. What is happening at TOFS? The Original Factory Shop was bought by Modella Capital, a private equity firm, in February. Modella is known for taking on struggling retailers and has also recently bought Hobbycraft and WHSmith's high street shops. The firm quickly launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 The Original Factory Shop stores. At the end of April, Modella drew up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for the retailer. Companies often use CVAs to avoid insolvency, which could otherwise force stores to close or trigger the collapse of the entire business. They allow firms to explore different options, such as negotiating reduced rents with landlords. But The Original Factory Shop previously told The Press and Journal that a 'number of loss-making stores would have to close' in the restructuring. Do you have a money problem that needs sorting? India confident of meeting fiscal deficit target, despite planned tax cuts

NEW DELHI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - India is confident of meeting its fiscal deficit target of 4.4% for the current fiscal year, according to a government source with knowledge of the matter, despite its plans to cut consumption tax later this year. In the biggest tax overhaul since 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced sweeping changes to the complex goods and services tax (GST) regime which will make daily essentials and electronics cheaper. "India's federal and state governments have options to offset any loss of revenue due to lowering of rates," the government source said without providing further details. The source also said it will end the practice of collecting compensation cess by December. The GST compensation cess is an additional levy imposed on certain items to compensate states for any revenue loss incurred due to the implementation. India's finance ministry did not respond to a request for comment sent outside of office hours.

Air Canada union says flight attendants will continue strike, defy government

MONTREAL Aug 17 (Reuters) - Air Canada ( opens new tab flight attendants said on Sunday they will remain on strike and challenge a return-to-work order they called unconstitutional, defying a government decision to force them back to their duties by 2 p.m. ET (1800 GMT). Air Canada had said it planned to resume flights on Sunday evening, a day after the Canadian government issued a directive to end a cabin crew strike that caused the suspension of around 700 daily flights, stranding more than 100,000 passengers. Thousands of Air Canada flight attendants walked off the job on Saturday for the first time since 1985, after months of negotiations over a new contract. The Canadian Union of Public Employees said in a statement that members would remain on strike and invited Air Canada back to the table to "negotiate a fair deal." Air Canada and a Canadian government spokesperson were not immediately available for comment. The country's largest carrier had said some flights would still be canceled over the next 7-10 days as the schedule stabilizes and returns to normal. It had started cancelling flights on Friday in anticipation of the stoppage. The Canadian Industrial Relations Board ordered Air Canada to resume operations and all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants to return to their duties. The CIRB was acting on a directive from Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu as the government moved to end the strike and require binding arbitration to break a contract impasse, an action that Air Canada had previously sought from Prime Minister Mark Carney's minority Liberal government but unionized flight attendants fiercely opposed. The most contentious issue in the contract negotiations has been the union's demand for compensation for time spent on the ground between flights and when helping passengers board. Attendants are now largely paid only when their plane is moving. CUPE had pushed for a negotiated solution, saying binding arbitration would take pressure off the airline. Air Canada said on Sunday that the CIRB had ordered the terms of the collective agreement between the union and the airline that expired on March 31 be extended until a new agreement can be reached.
