Injured Haughey pulls out of world championships in Singapore

Reuters2 days ago
July 21 (Reuters) - Defending women's 200 metres freestyle champion Siobhan Haughey said on Monday she has withdrawn from the world championships in Singapore due to a back injury.
Haughey, a four-time Olympic medallist, became Hong Kong's first swimming world champion with her 200 win at Doha in 2024.
"I have pulled out of the world championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury," the 27-year-old said on social media.
"I'm sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what's best for me.
"As elite athletes, we're trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently."
The swimming events at the world championships take place in Singapore from July 27 to August 3.

World champion calls for Manny Pacquiao showdown after comeback draw

Welterweight world champion Rolando 'Rolly' Romero has welcomed a fight with Manny Pacquiao following the Filipino legend's impressive return to the ring. Pacquiao made his comeback at the age of 46 after a four-year absence on Saturday night as he battled to a majority draw with Mario Barrios in their WBC world title clash. Pacquiao's advisor Sean Gibbons claimed his man should have been declared the winner but played down the chances of a rematch after accusing Barrios of going into his shell during the fight. He mentioned Romero as a potential next foe for Pacquiao in the wake of his upset win over Ryan Garcia in May, and the newly crowned WBA titlist is fully on board. 'A Hall of Famer on my resume, who wouldn't want that? That's the easiest way to get into the Hall of Fame, right?' Romero told Boxing Scene when asked about facing Pacquiao. 'We can do it. Everything has to make sense. It's going to be a fan favourite. That makes sense right there.' Pacquiao would not bring a belt to the table if he fought Romero after falling agonisingly short in his bid to regain welterweight gold. But Romero feels he should have got his hand raised and wants to test himself against an all-time great, while insisting that money would not be his main motivation for taking the fight. 'It was a close fight, regardless – not to take anything away from Mario Barrios,' Romero added. 'But I personally saw Pacquiao winning. 'A lot of people had Pacquiao winning. Barrios only clearly won the last three rounds. I feel like Pacquiao was winning the others, stealing some of them with these bursting moments to close rounds. 'It's not about money. Everyone's chasing all that. … I'm not a person who boxes for money, and I think I've proven that enough times.'

Eva Okaro relishing trailblazer status ahead of World Championships

Okaro became the first black British swimmer to compete in the pool at an Olympic Games at the age of just 17 in Paris last summer when she was part of the women's 4 x 100m freestyle relay team which reached the final. Now 18, she is heading for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore delighted to be inspiring other young swimmers. Sprint Queens 👑👑 Scarlett Humphrey (S11) takes the Multi-classification British title by a single point, with Eva Okaro setting a big lifetime best to win the Women's 50m Freestyle A Final secure ➕ secure her Singapore world champs team place 👉 — Aquatics GB (@Aquatics_GB) April 17, 2025 Okaro, who won the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in April, said: 'I think it's a privilege to be in this role and I like to be a role model to especially young girls of any ethnicity, any colour, it doesn't matter. 'But it's just nice to know that I'm not in this alone as well because they don't just look up to me, but they encourage me and want to see me do well and I think that's also a big thing, just knowing that there are people behind me and people that I don't even know that just believe in me. 'That helps a lot with my confidence and being able to perform.' Asked if she was aware anecdotally of youngsters who had been encouraged by her rise to prominence, Okaro added: 'I've had a few messages before and I've been stopped a couple of times by little girls who are basically just telling me that they keep swimming because of me, which is really nice.' Eva Okaro is heading for the University of Texas after sitting her A-levels (Zac Goodwin/PA) Okaro, who still trains with her twin sister Izabella, is scheduled to compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly in Singapore, although is yet to make a decision on whether to take part in all three after missing a week and a half of training while she sat her A-levels. Whatever happens at the World Championships, she will be heading for the United States later this year to continue her athletic and academic careers at the University of Texas, glad her exams are out of the way. She said: 'It's definitely made me feel more relaxed, 100 per cent, because little things like even homework or turning up to lessons and waking up at 7.30am for breakfast, stuff like that, I don't have to do that anymore so I can solely be focused on swimming. 'That's definitely something I've got in my locker now and it's just made it a lot easier for me.'
