iPhone Fold won't break the mold — here's why that won't matter

Tom's Guide28-07-2025
The impending release of the iPhone Fold will arguably be the biggest shakeup to the iPhone lineup in years. Normally a new Apple product means some new innovation that alters the way rival products are made and sold afterwards. But according to Mark Gurman, the first foldable iPhone may not be as innovative as some might hope — at least not at first.
As Gurman points out, a lot of Apple's new products arrive fairly early on — even if Apple is rarely the first to market. That's being turned on its head with foldables, since they've been around since in 2018, and the market is pretty much dominated by Samsung.
With that in mind, Gurman claims Apple won't be releasing a "radically new interface or transformative hardware." Instead we're looking at something that isn't going to look too dissimilar to a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. The foldable is said to come with the same core components including, as has previously been reported, a foldable OLED screen made by Samsung Display.
Considering how well made the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is, Gurman notes that "Samsung has already taken care of much of the heavy lifting," meaning, "Apple's first foldable won't break any technological barriers or redefine the category."
Which may not matter. Not only does Apple command intense brand loyalty, it's also pretty skilled in the marketing department. That means there's already an established market of people that could potentially pick up the iPhone Fold. Including plenty of people who may already want one of the best foldables, but aren't willing to swap to Android.
Still, Gurman is quick to point out the phone won't just be a "carbon copy" of the Z Fold 7. He reiterated previous reports, noting Apple is focussed on fixing some of foldables' biggest issues. That includes making the crease less prominent and improving the design of the hinge — not to mention the software features coded into iOS.
This, of course, doesn't discount the possibility Apple will be more innovative with future foldable devices. Whether it be a new iPhone Fold generation, or the rumored foldable iPad that could be arriving in the near future.

Mark your calendars — iPhone 17 release date may have just leaked

Thanks to the German site iPhone Ticker (spotted by AppleInsider), we may know when Apple's iPhone 17 will be revealed. Based on information from German mobile providers, iPhone Ticker reports the iPhone 17 event will take place on Tuesday, September 9. It fits with Apple's usual September schedule. Last year's iPhone 16 'Glowtime' release was also on September 9, which was a Monday. Typically, preorders for Apple's newest devices start on the following Friday, which would be September 10 if this report proves true. From there the first shipments could start arriving around September 20. September 20 is also the date the German site reported the iPhone 17 will be available in stores. This year, we expect Apple to debut the usual four phones in the iPhone 17 lineup with one big change. Alongside the base model iPhone 17, the Pro model iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, it's been rumored that Apple is dropping the Plus model in favor of the ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air. Beyond the super-thin phone, the Pro models should feature a redesigned camera array that's more Google Pixel-esque. They also might feature aluminum frames, a better telephoto lens and 12GB of RAM. This might be the last time Apple releases those four models together. We've seen rumors that Apple might split the iPhone 18 launch in two with the vanilla model and the budget-friendly iPhone 17e launching in the spring of 2027. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. It would reserve next year's iPhone 18 launch for the Pro models including a potential iPhone Fold. In addition to the phones, we could also see the new Apple Watch Series 11, and potentially a new Apple Watch Ultra 3 and SE 3. We're hoping for some big upgrades. A leaked Apple timeline indicated the Apple Watch 11 and Ultra 3 are coming this year, but it didn't have information about any SE models. Both the Ultra 3 and Series 11 could be the first Apple Watches to get blood pressure monitoring, though the Masimo lawsuit is still ongoing as of this writing. We also might see the third-generation AirPods Pro. Though that same timeline suggested we won't see those until 2026. However, the headphones have been teased in iOS 26 code hinting at a sooner release. Potentially, Apple might debut the AI-powered HomePod 3, though its just as likely the smart home hub won't launch until later in the fall. Samsung Galaxy Ring drops to its all-time low price from Prime Day

Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority The Samsung Galaxy Ring is an awesome wearable, but it's expensive, and deals are hard to come by. It's rarely on sale! The best discount we've seen on it takes it down to $299.99, which is $100 in savings, and this only happened during Prime Day. Today, the same record-low price is available for everyone! Buy the Samsung Galaxy Ring for just $299.99 ($100 off) This offer is available from Amazon as a 'limited time deal.' The discount is applied automatically to all color versions of the Galaxy Ring. This includes Black, Silver, or Gold. Samsung Galaxy Ring Samsung Galaxy Ring Fancy Titanium ring, with fancy sensors The Samsung Galaxy Ring is a leap into a new device segment for Samsung. Available in nine sizes 5 through 13, this jewelry-inspired wearable is packed with sensors to track your health and fitness, and some basic controls for your smartphone. Designed for 24/7 wear. See price at Amazon Save $100.00 Limited Time Deal! As much as I like the Samsung Galaxy Ring, and everyone I know who uses one feels the same way, I find it hard to pay almost $400 for a smart ring. This $100 discount makes the price much more enticing. I am personally not much of a flashy person, which is one of the things that made me like the Samsung Galaxy Ring so much. It is really made to go unnoticed, with a minimalist design that doesn't make it look much like a high-tech gadget. It sure is more than a cheap, simple band, though. It is made of titanium, which is known for being a very light and resistant metal. It's only 7mm wide and 2.6mm thick, so it will also be very comfortable to wear. While it looks simple, there's a lot of technology inside this little ring. It has features to throw around! The Samsung Galaxy Ring can track your heart rate, blood oxygen levels, skin temperature, sleep, activity, and more. It can even help women predict their menstrual cycles! Lanh Nguyen / Android Authority This is a great health tool, but smart home enthusiasts will also love its smart home functionality. It integrates with Samsung SmartThings, and you can use it to control your smart home devices. For example, you can program it to turn off the lights when the rung detects that you are asleep. Pretty fun, right?! You can use it with any Android device, but some of the features are exclusive to Samsung. Some of these include the ability to use pinch gestures, Samsung Health data integration, access to Energy Score, and Wellness Tips. The battery life is pretty nice, as it can last about four days on a charge. You can conveniently charge it using the carrying case. As an added benefit, there is no subscription needed to use the Samsung Galaxy Ring. Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority Again, this is a record-low price for this product, so you might want to sign up for yours before the offer disappears. These discounts don't tend to last long. By the way, you'll have to find out and pick your ring size. Samsung has its own guide to figure out which size works best for you, so check it out before you make the purchase. Follow

Teardown confirms Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a repair nightmare, but maybe that's the point

TL;DR iFixit gives the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 a pitiful repair score in its latest teardown. Fragile inner components, glued batteries, and a hard-to-replace screen make DIY fixes tough. It could be that the same design choices may help the phone survive extreme durability tests. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 impressed last week in JerryRigEverything's notorious bend test, which is just as well. According to iFixit, if anything does go wrong, actually repairing the device is a different kind of endurance test. In a new teardown video, iFixit gives the Fold 7 a repairability score of just three out of ten, calling it fragile and a 'repair nightmare.' The team does praise Samsung's hardware engineering in some places — like the easily replaceable USB-C port — but says frustrating adhesives, ultra-thin batteries, and a highly delicate inner screen make most common repairs both difficult and prohibitively expensive. This whole process is everything that's wrong with battery replacement in modern electronics. iFixit The disassembly process reveals two glued-in lithium-ion batteries, both of which use older-style pull-tab adhesives that frequently tear and require force to remove. Given how thin the batteries are, iFixit warns that applying too much pressure could bend them enough to cause combustion. The inner display is even more of a headache. Despite being rated for 500,000 folds, the 8-inch AMOLED panel is extremely sensitive to pressure and torsion. Even tweezers used to lift the glued-in bezel can cause damage. iFixit estimates a screen repair will cost nearly $600, and replacing just the panel isn't realistic in most cases, as the screen and chassis replacements are typically bundled. In Samsung's defense, some of the same things that make the Fold 7 hard to repair may be helping it survive in one piece. JerryRigEverything's onslaught highlighted the device's impressive structural strength, with Samsung's redesigned hinge and outer display holding up under serious abuse. It's possible that the strong adhesives and tightly packed components that frustrate repair efforts also contribute to that surprising durability. Still, iFixit criticizes Samsung's broader repairability record, pointing out that spare parts and repair manuals are still missing for last year's Z Fold 6, let alone the new model. They say they'll consider updating the Z Fold 7 repair score if Samsung improves its support for self-repair. Follow
