KMC forms health teams in wards for door-to-door survey, focus on seniors

Kolkata: Taking note of the gradual rise in Covid cases, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has formed a team of health workers in wards who will go from door to door in neighbourhoods to identify elderly citizens with comorbidities suffering from Covid-like symptoms.
KMC health officials have also been asked to collect data from the state and private hospitals about any patient testing positive for Covid. At the same time, the civic brass has activated the Covid infrastructure at the health clinics as part of preparation to combat any outbreak in future.
Deputy mayor and KMC health department MMiC Atin Ghosh on Tuesday held an urgent meeting with the senior health officials from all 16 boroughs and asked them to get ready for any emergency.
"We interacted with the borough executive health officers and asked them to train the medical officers who joined post-Covid period so that any patients turning up at our health clinics are examined well and, if need be, send patients with Covid-like symptoms to the School of Tropical Medicine to undergo tests," said Ghosh.
Meanwhile, the KMC health department decided to launch a campaign to educate citizens about emerging dangers. "We will ask citizens to use sanitiser, masks, and keep social distancing from a patient who might test positive for Covid," said Ghosh.
However, Ghosh made it clear that there is no Covid threat now and the KMC health department didn't want to spread panic. "All we need to do is ask the citizens to remain alert," the deputy mayor said.

The deceased had heart and kidney ailments, said sources. This was among the five Covid deaths reported across the country on Tuesday. The 43-year-old woman was admitted to CMRI Hospital on May 28 with complaints of a two-week-long bout of fever and respiratory distress. Suspected of an infection, her respiratory samples were sent for a viral panel test and she tested positive for Covid-19. While she apparently had no existing health conditions, tests revealed her heart ejection fraction was as low as 20%. The death report cites acute coronary syndrome, acute kidney injury and septic shock in a case of Covid-19. Among the seven Covid positive patients admitted at the hospital was an 80-year-old man who had heart issues. "Timely detection and close monitoring in hospital are required for patients," said infectious diseases specialist Sayan Chakraborty of Manipal Hospital Dhakuria. "We have three Covid patients, including one in the ICU, while we discharged two recently," said Doli Biswas, chief nursing officer of Fortis Hospital Anandapur. Gujarat logs 108 new Covid-19 cases, Maharashtra confirms 86 infections

Of these, 13 patients had pre-existing medical conditions such as nephrotic syndrome with hypocalcaemic seizures, cancer, diabetic ketoacidosis, interstitial lung disease, cardiac arrhythmia and Parkinson's disease. One of the deceased was a 47-year-old woman who had presented symptoms of fever and shortness of breath. Since January 2025, Maharashtra has conducted 12,880 Covid-19 tests. Patients who test positive are receiving appropriate treatment, the department confirmed.

The patient, who has a history of heart disease for the past eight years, had no recent travel history.
