9 Earth Day celebrations, some begin this weekend

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Living in Hawaiʻi makes Earth Day a bit more special than in other places. We have one of the most unique and dynamic ecosystems in the world, and most locals have a keen interest in protecting it.
Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970, by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin) to raise awareness about environmental issues. It sparked a national movement for cleaner air, water and land.
In Hawaiʻi, Earth Day is celebrated with beach cleanups, mālama ʻāina (caring for the land) events, native tree plantings, educational festivals and cultural activities. The celebrations honor Hawaiʻi's unique ecosystems and the importance of mālama honua, protecting our island Earth for future generations.

Community members frustrated over train derailment mess

HOUSTON - A train derailment in Houston last week caused a huge mess. Several community members are frustrated because the disastrous mess has not been cleaned up yet. "This took place on Thursday. Here we are on Monday. Nobody is here to check it out. To me, it shows lack of leadership in this community and shows lack of accountability on behalf of the Union Pacific," said Tiffany Parker, spokesperson for Culture Commission Advocacy Group. The backstory Union Pacific said last week nine empty train cars derailed in Fifth Ward near Lyons Avenue around 8:30 p.m. last Thursday. The company said there were no injuries and no releases. However. some people noticed unknown material under may have been inside one of the train cars. "If they were empty, why do you have content covered up? You can tell there was a spill, but we don't know what that spill is," said Kathy Blueford-Daniels, Community Member. "It's very unacceptable." "It's a beautiful community. They don't deserve this. It's like a third-world country," said Rob Slater, founder of Culture Commission Advocacy Group. "This wouldn't have happened in River Oaks or Upper Kirby. This is nonsense. I know it takes days and takes time to move, but at least block it off." The other side Union Pacific told FOX 26 on Monday there were actually seven derailed cars containing grain inside. They also said the incident is under investigation and cleanup is underway. Some people in the community are upset because the cars are still sitting there and want the mess gone. Union Pacific said they plan to begin cleanup this week. The Source FOX 26's Jillian Hartmann spoke with community members about what's going on.

Cleanup continues into the weekend after 5,000 gallon diesel fuel spill

Crews returned to Harbor East Saturday to continue cleaning up lingering fuel that spilled into the harbor Wednesday. What was initially thought to be a 2,000-gallon spill is actually a 5,000-gallon spill, according to Johns Hopkins on Friday evening. The red tint seen across the harbor earlier this week is now hard to spot after crews spent the last few days cleaning up the harbor. Though streaks of fuel in the water could still be seen on Saturday. "I was just walking around. I heard about the oil spill," said Baltimore resident Matthew Aubourg. "Just wanted to check it out for myself and see what some of the impacts might be in the area." Aubourg said he's thinking ahead, hoping Johns Hopkins does everything to make things right. "That they also pay for and account for the externalities of the impacts," he said. "So, not just the cleanup but the things that the spill has impacted, and putting in the necessary precautions so that this doesn't happen again." Response updates On Friday, Governor Wes Moore and Mayor Brandon Scott wrote in a joint statement that there continues to be no impact on drinking water or air quality in the area. They said the operation is transitioning from an emergency response to a remediation response. "Contractors hired by Johns Hopkins will continue work to clean the remaining spill onsite," the statement reads. "As the scope of the cleanup remains fluid, the scene is expected to remain active over the weekend." Baltimore Water Taxi service The Baltimore Water Taxi did not operate on Saturday due to the containment boom at multiple locations. That includes harbor trolley services and harbor cruises. The water taxi service said it did not include any private charter bookings, as that vessel was out of the area of containment prior to the boom being placed. Traffic impacts Service along the Harbor Connector Route 1 Line from Maritime Park to Locust Point is suspended until further notice. Harbor Connector Routes 2 and 3 will continue to operate. The Charm City Circulator is starting to run a shuttle service from Fleet and Caroline to Key Hwy and Hull Street for Harbor Connector passengers in need of transport. All watercraft should avoid the area between Harbor Point and Henderson's Wharf until further notice. The Central Avenue roadway will remain closed between Lancaster and Point Street as operations continue. These closures include pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The city of Augusta officially launching Operation City Clean-Up

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – Operation City Clean-Up is designed to offer meaningful service opportunities for people with court ordered community service. There have been community clean ups in the past, but this will be the first consistent one in the Augusta area. It will focus on high-traffic areas such as parks, streets and vacant lots. The clean-up started in the Harrisburg corridor but they will be going around to different areas that need to be cleaned. 'We're going to move this around to every single district throughout the county. Some Saturdays we'll be out in South Richmond County, others we may be downtown, we may be over in the Turpin Hill area, it just depends on the area that needs the most help,' said Garnett L. Johnson, Mayor of Augusta. For the city clean-ups, they are offering a 2 for 1 ratio to ensure accountability and encourage participation. One of the participants of the clean-up, Syntavous Smith, says he believes it will do just that, and he is happy to be serving his community. 'He came out here and surprised us, two for one you can't beat that! Four hours and you get four extra hours, so yeah, I think it's a good purpose and a good way to get people to actually do it. We're serving the purpose of cleaning up the community and helping the community out, anything for the community.' Mayor Johnson says he is looking forward to the future clean ups, and is hoping more people join. 'What's most important is hopefully we're gaining ambassadors to tell others as they're driving along the roadways not to throw litter out on the side of the road. As I have always said, I don't see this as punishment, keeping Augusta clean and having a sense of pride where we call home is very important and I'm just glad to have these individuals that are helping today and will be helping moving forward,' said Johnson. Operation City Clean-Up will happen every Saturday from 8am-12p. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
