What Toronto can learn from the 2015 Pan Am Games legacy ahead of next year's World Cup
That's according to one of the architects of the Pan Am Games, which the city hosted a decade ago.
"I'm certain in the moment, the World Cup will captivate Canadians and the world," David Shoemaker, CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, told CBC Radio's Metro Morning this week.
But, he said, it can also extend so much further. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup right around the corner, experts are using the 2015 Pan Am Games as a successful example of how Toronto can host big sporting events with a focus on long-lasting, community-building projects.
"When done right, when done with a vision … the impact of the World Cup could last for generations," he said. "Look carefully at Toronto 2015."The focus around FIFA next year has been on its price tag. According to a 2024 report, the tournament will cost the city of Toronto $380 million, substantially more than the initially projected costs in 2018 of $30 to $45 million.
However, Shoemaker says, "When you invest in sport, the return on the investment comes across in multiple ways," and the Pan Am Games can serve as a "blueprint."
Toronto's Pan Am project included 10 new facilities, an air-rail link and a waterfront athletes' village. But Shoemaker points to the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough as a standout.
"It hosted everything and it's left a lasting impression for the community around it," he said, adding that everyone from young kids in city programs to high-performance athletes in training still use the facility.
Similarly, Shoemaker said the Mattamy National Cycling Centre velodrome in Milton has become a hub for more than just cycling.
"Its really a community centre," he said. "Last time I was there they were playing pickleball."Then there's the athletes' village, which was constructed on previously flood-prone land and has become an entire neighbourhood of its own.
Ken Greenberg, an urban designer who took part in its creation, says the neighbourhood has continued to evolve since 2015.
At its inception, the complex, dubbed the Canary District, contained 810 condos and townhouses, some of which were set aside for affordable rentals. It also included an 18-acre park and retail space, growing from there.
"The park came first, but also great facilities like the YMCA, like George Brown College including student residences, [and] most recently ... an Indigenous hub, the first of its kind in Canada," Greenberg said.
Planning for multi-use spaces, social mix, affordability, connectivity, sustainability, "for legacy" — that's what makes it a successful community all these years later, said Greenberg.
Currently, the World Cup's legacy in Toronto is being cemented by a $146 million investment in Toronto's BMO field. Also, its accepting donations for the Soccer For All Legacy Fund, which would include up to 12 soccer "mini-pitches" across the city, approved by council in March.

Christian McCaffrey shines in 49ers camp after injury-filled season
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — In a training camp that has seemed to feature a new injury almost every day for the San Francisco 49ers, the one positive on the injury front has been the health of Christian McCaffrey. After missing almost all of last season with injuries to his Achilles tendon and knee, McCaffrey has been one of the few running backs or receivers to make it through the first five weeks of practice without an injury. While he has gotten some scheduled rest days, McCaffrey has been a near constant on the field and once again looks like the player who transformed the 49ers offense after arriving in a midseason trade in 2022. 'You all have eyes like I do, Christian looks fantastic,' star left tackle Trent Williams said Thursday. 'He looks like Offense Player of the Year Christian. So that's really, really refreshing to see, knowing what he had to deal with last year, just the little nicks and knacks and not being able to do what he loves. To see him out there this year 100% healthy, treating every play like it's his last, playing with his hair on fire. It really motivates the guys when you got a generational talent that brings it to work and to practice every day.' It's a far cry from last season when McCaffrey injured his Achilles tendon early in training camp and missed the first eight games of the season. He rushed for just 202 yards on 50 carries in four games before going down with a season-ending knee injury as he was unable to match his sensational 2023 season. McCaffrey won the AP Offensive Player of the Year that season after leading the NFL with 2,023 yards from scrimmage and tying for the league lead with 21 touchdowns. McCaffrey had missed just one game combined in 2022-23 — a meaningless Week 18 game in the 2023 season for San Francisco when he had a sore calf — after missing 23 games because of injuries in his final two full seasons with Carolina. Coach Kyle Shanahan joked last week that McCaffrey had hit 25 mph on his GPS readings in practice. But no matter what speed McCaffrey has reached, he is looking much healthier than he did a year ago when he missed almost all of training camp. 'Obviously physically he looks great, getting in and out of cuts, running hard. Back to the McCaffrey that we all know,' quarterback Brock Purdy said. 'And then mentally he's just, he's on one, like he's ready to get after it with the season and obviously from beginning to end, like play a whole season and go hard. That's who he is. He keeps telling all of us in the locker room, he's like, 'Dude, I can't wait. I can't wait.'' Roster moves Receiver Skyy Moore passed a physical, completing a trade that sent him to San Francisco from Kansas City. The Niners sent a sixth-round pick in 2027 to the Chiefs for Moore and a 2027 seventh-rounder. Moore gives San Francisco a healthy body at receiver with so many other players hurt or facing a suspension to start the season such as Demarcus Robinson. General manager John Lynch said on his radio show on flagship station KNBR on Thursday that Russell Gage was the latest Niners receiver to get hurt with a knee injury that will likely sideline him for a week or two. San Francisco already is dealing with injuries at receiver to Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins. Moore was drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 2022 but hasn't produced much in his first three seasons. He had 43 catches for 494 yards and one TD in 36 games. He didn't catch a single pass last season because of a core muscle injury. The Niners also made a swap at backup quarterback with the team re-signing Tanner Mordecai after cutting him earlier this month and releasing Nate Sudfeld after two practices. Mordecai should get time in the exhibition finale on Saturday against the Chargers. Cornerback Tre Brown was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Brown was signed in March to be in the mix at either slot or outside cornerback after spending four seasons with Seattle. But he fell down the depth chart early in camp and now is shut down with an undisclosed injury. ___ AP NFL:

James Wood hits a 3-run homer and the Nationals beat the banged-up Mets 9-3 to win series
WASHINGTON (AP) — James Wood broke out of a slump with a three-run homer, Riley Adams hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning, and the last-place Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 9-3 on Thursday to take two of three from their banged-up NL East rivals. Wood's opposite-field shot to left in the ninth was his 26th homer of the season but just his second since the second-year slugger played in his first All-Star Game. Rookie Brady House had three hits and an RBI for the Nationals, who got another strong performance from their inexperienced bullpen after All-Star MacKenzie Gore couldn't get through the fifth. Jackson Rutledge (2-2), Clayton Beeter, PJ Poulin, Cole Henry and Jose A. Ferrer combined to allow one hit in 4 2/3 innings, with Ferrer getting the last four outs for his fourth save. Francisco Lindor broke the Mets' franchise record for leadoff homers in a season with his eighth. It was his 25th homer of the season and 28th career leadoff shot. Starling Marte also homered for the Mets, who didn't have regulars Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil in the lineup due to nagging injuries. McNeil struck out looking as a pinch-hitter in the eighth. New York has lost 16 of 21 and fell seven games behind first-place Philadelphia in the division. Key moment House led off the fifth with a single against Sean Manaea (1-2) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul DeJong before Adams' single off reliever Tyler Rogers made it 4-3. Key stat Mets slugger Juan Soto went 1 for 12 with six strikeouts in the series against the club that signed him as a 16-year-old in 2015. Up next The Mets begin a series at Atlanta on Friday, with rookie Nolan McLean (1-0, 0.00 ERA) making his second career start. Joey Wentz (4-3, 4.72) pitches for the Braves. Cade Cavalli (1-0, 2.20) starts Washington's series opener Friday at Philadelphia, which counters with Taijuan Walker (4-6, 3.34). ___ AP MLB:

Kingston Frontenacs Sign 2025 First-Rounder Aleks Kulemin, Son Of Former Toronto Maple Leafs Forward
The Kingston Frontenacs have officially recruited both of their first-round draft picks from the 2025 OHL Priority Selection, even though one of them took a little longer to get over the finish line. The Frontenacs organization announced the signing of forward Aleks Kulemin to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. 'Aleks has the size and skill to impact the game in all situations,' said Kingston Frontenacs GM Kory Cooper. 'We see him as a modern-day, two-way forward with a high ceiling. With his size and high hockey IQ, he has the framework to be a pro in the future.' Kingston selected the towering 6-foot-3 centerman with the ninth overall pick back in April. Due to their 2024 first-rounder, Caleb Malhotra, not reporting to training camp last season (later had his rights traded to Brantford), the organization received the ninth overall pick as compensatory. Frontenacs' 17th overall pick from 2025, Matthew Henderson, signed back in late June. If you're a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and recognize the last name Kulemin, yes, Aleks is the son of former Maple Leafs forward Nikolai Kulemin, who played six seasons in Toronto before signing with the New York Islanders in 2014. His son Aleks played for the Don Mills Flyers U16 AAA team in the GTHL last season. The Flyers won the U16 AAA GTHL Championship and were runner-ups in the OHL Cup to North Bay's Camryn Warren's Toronto Jr. Canadiens. Despite not taking the crown at the OHL Cup, Kulemin, along with his Don Mills squad, won the Toronto Titans Early Bird tournament, the Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic, and the Oakville Rangers Winter Classic. With all games combined, regular season, playoffs, and tournaments, the Flyers finished with a record of 67-9-2. Kulemin recorded 67 points (24 goals, 43 assists) in 69 games last year. Kulemin not signing his OHL contract until now probably has to do with a similar situation the Peterborough Petes experienced with their first-overall pick, Kaden McGregor, who didn't sign his SPA until today as well. 2025 First Overall Pick Kaden McGregor Finally Signs With Peterborough Better late than never. The Peterborough Petes have finally put pen to paper with the 2025 first overall pick. Both McGregor and Kulemin are represented by Newport Sports Management. Newport wasn't happy about the OHL's modification of their standard player contracts, which we assume is why the two took so long to sign. Kingston's training camp opens up next week at Slushi Puppie Place, where Kulemin will be in attendance.
