No-stop Hooksett tolls on I-93 to close for two months
Mar. 18—If you're used to driving through the Hooksett tolls on Interstate 93 without stopping, well, get used to stopping for the next two months.
From April 1 to around Memorial Day, all four lanes of open-road tolls — two each on I-93 north and south — will be closed at the Hooksett Toll Plaza, state officials announced Tuesday. All drivers will funnel through the six traditional cash and E-ZPass toll booths on each side of the highway instead.
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation will replace all of the equipment used to capture E-ZPass transponder signals from overhead and automatically charge motorists on their way through.
The project is expected to be completed before Memorial Day, officials said in a news release.
The E-ZPass system uses sensors, cameras, computer servers and software to collect and process each transaction. The system was installed in 2013.
"Travelers should slow down, obey all posted signs and focus on driving," officials said.

GM claims No. 2 spot in US electric vehicle sales
General Motors Co. topped crosstown rival Ford Motor Co. to take the No. 2 spot in U.S. electric vehicle sales for the first five months of 2025. The Detroit automaker announced 62,000 EVs sold this year through May. Chevrolet carried sales among the company's brands, with 37,000 sold in the United States in that same period. Ford sold 34,132 EVs through May, according to the company. That represents a quarter drop year-over-year as sales of the F-150 Lightning pickup and E-Transit commercial van declined 42% and 93%, respectively. GM saw 94% year-over-year growth in domestic EV sales in the first quarter of 2025 and boasted more than 15% of U.S. EV market share. "In the first two months of the second quarter, we more than doubled our EV sales compared to the same period last year." Part of the bump is attributable to price-conscious buyers worried about tariffs raising prices and legislative efforts to strip the $7,500 EV tax credit, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions LLC. "The idea that parts may be in short supply, costs may go up, all of these factors are weighing on the decision-making of buyers today," Fiorani said. "If they believe that they're going to need a vehicle in the next few months, a lot of them have moved to the dealership now to purchase while they believe the prices will be lower." GM still trails Tesla Inc. in EV sales, but CEO Elon Musk's dominance is waning in the face of domestic and Chinese competition. Tesla sold 1.3 million cars in the first quarter of 2025, a 9% decline from the year-earlier period, according to Bloomberg. Canadian Grand Prix to run on the same day as the Indianapolis 500 in 2026

Formula 1 released its 2026 schedule on Tuesday and it includes the series going head-to-head with the Indianapolis 500. The Monaco Grand Prix has moved back to June and will take place on June 7. In its place is the Canadian Grand Prix, which will be held on May 24. Advertisement This year's Canadian Grand Prix is set to be held on Sunday and has traditionally been held in mid-June. But next year's date swap is being made for travel-related reasons. Monaco will be the first race of the season in Europe. By moving the Canadian Grand Prix up and Monaco back, F1 will have nine straight European races. Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix is set to start at 2 p.m. ET for a primetime start in Europe. Assuming the race keeps that start time, it will overlap with the end of the Indy 500. The Indy 500 was scheduled to go green at 12:45 p.m. ET this year but was delayed for rain showers. The Monaco Grand Prix hasn't been held on Memorial Day weekend every year of its existence, but its absence from the same day of the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 will be a stark change for race fans who have become accustomed to watching all three events in the same day. The ninth and final European race of the year will also be a new race on the calendar. F1 will host a second race in Spain on a street circuit in Madrid on Sept. 13. That race replaces Imola on the calendar. Imola has held a spring Grand Prix in recent years, but is being dropped for 2026 and beyond. The Miami Grand Prix will be on May 3, while the United States Grand Prix in Austin will be on Oct. 25 and the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be on Nov. 21. PA Turnpike removing tollbooths at interchanges as part of new tolling system
The Pennsylvania Turnpike has begun removing toll plazas east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension as part of its open-road tolling system. Officials said the project started with the Pocono interchange (Exit 95) on the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476), with contractors removing the tollbooths and canopy from the interchange. Officials said the Valley Forge interchange in Montgomery County is scheduled to be removed this summer. Tollbooths at the Morgantown interchange in Berks County and at the Downingtown interchange in Chester County are scheduled to be removed in 2026. Each interchange will be reconstructed to provide unobstructed traffic flow, officials said. 'The PA Turnpike has been a leader in transportation from the day we opened in 1940 as 'America's First Superhighway' and while traditional tollbooths made practical sense then, we now have more advanced and efficient systems that better serve today's 21st century customers,' Mark Compton, turnpike CEO, said in an announcement of the work. 'The switch to ORT (open-road tolling) modernizes the Pennsylvania Turnpike for today. We look forward to providing customers with a safer and more convenient travel experience on the PA Turnpike and better serving the communities we touch along the way.' In the open-road system, tolls are charged electronically as travelers drive at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping. Toll plazas have been replaced by overhead structures — called gantries — located between interchanges on the highway. As drivers pass beneath the structures, equipment on the gantry and in the road processes E-ZPass or Toll By Plate transactions, they said. This system reduces confusion and lane switching associated with traditional, stop-and-go tolling, they said. The switch to open-road tolling in the east occurred in January. The system will launch on the mainline western section in 2027, and tollbooths on the mainline will be fully removed across the turnpike by the end of 2028. Officials said open-road tolling will result in a $25 million yearly savings in interchange maintenance and operations costs and $50 million in yearly operational savings versus traditional collection methods. They said the existing all-electronic systems have already led to reductions of up to 45% of CO2 emissions on the turnpike and that an additional 7% of emissions reductions will be realized when the system is in full operation. Toll plaza removal also reduces the turnpike's footprint by 150 acres, they said. During demolitions, state police and turnpike personnel will be positioned to assist drivers.
