Liverpool legend Gerrard has seemingly dropped out of the race after rejecting an approach to make a sensational return to his former club.
Ancelotti and Martin are understood to be the leading contenders as things stand.
However, The Herald claim another manager has now joined the race, with former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli the latest gaffer to hold discussions with the Light Blues board.
The 36-year-old is currently a free agent after he resigned from the Eredivisie giants following their dramatic title collapse which saw PSV Eindhoven clinch the title on the final day.
Ajax threw away a nine point lead in the final few games which allowed Malik Tillman and Co to make it two-in-a-row following a last day shootout against Sparta Rotterdam.
Emotional Farioli quit following the major disappointment and technical director Alex Kroes branded his departure "incredibly disappointing".
More to follow.

Russell Martin is Rangers manager LIVE as former Southampton and Swansea boss kicks off new Ibrox era

Finally, Rangers have a new permanent manager and it's Russell Martin. After a largely forgettable loan spell at Ibrox a decade ago, Martin is back in Glasgow in the top job this time and is tasked with getting the club closer to a dominant Celtic team. The former MK Dons, Southampton and Swansea manager will work alongside new sporting director Kevin Thelwell to build his Gers squad over the summer. And with new owners 49ers Enterprises pumping £20million in, there will be money to spend, but it must be spent wisely. There are Champions League qualifiers to negotiate and there can be no let up in the league after seeing Brendan Rodgers' men streak away from them season after season for the last five years. Regaining the title may be a stretch in Martin's first season, but he'll be expected to put up a good fight and lift at least one of the two domestic cups on offer. No pressure then. 06:27Ross Pilcher Martin's last Rangers game Russell Martin's stint as a Rangers player won't live long in the memory. But at least the former Ibrox defender will have the chance to make up for it when he's named as the club's new gaffer. The 39-year-old looks certain to be announced as Philippe Clement's replacement in the coming days. And when he takes his seat in the famous Blue Room at the top of the marble staircase, it will be a million miles away from his ill-fated spell as a Gers player. Martin endured a six-month loan spell in Glasgow at one of the club's lowest ebbs. Rangers were miles off Celtic with Graeme Murty in charge before Jimmy Nicholl stepped in before the end of a disastrous campaign. Martin's last game in a blue shirt was on 13 May, 2018 at Easter Road in a memorable 5-5 draw against Hibs. But while he looks to be heading back to Govan as the club's new manager, where are the rest of his teammates from that day? One of them is plying their trade in SLOVAKIA, another is plodding away in the National League - and a certain Mexican striker is retired from the game. 06:25Ross Pilcher Martin's career rated and slated Russell Martin will get a crack at his fourth managerial gig when he's unveiled as Rangers' new gaffer. And irrespective of what he's achieved at MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton, respectively - the job at Ibrox will be his biggest challenge yet. The 39-year-old is on the verge of being appointed as Philippe Clement's replacement and the man to lead a new era at the club following their £100 million American takeover. But what type of manager will Rangers be getting? How astute is his recruitment of players? And how does he deal with the heat in press conferences when things aren't going well? Martin's career as a coach had been on an upward trajectory - from MK to Swansea to Saints - until he suffered his first major setback when he was sacked in December with his side heading for relegation. Martin's the man Russell Martin has been appointed as the new manager of Rangers on a three-year deal. Record Sport exclusively broke the news on Wednesday night that Martin will be officially paraded in the next 48 hours after convincing new chairman Andrew Cavenagh that he was the best man for the job. The Englishman has been without a club since getting the sack at Southampton last December, just six months after leading the club back to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. It's believed the ex-Gers and Scotland defender had been in discussions with Leicester City but has knocked back the chance to replace Ruud van Nistlerooy by finalising a return to Govan instead. The appointment brings the near four-month-long search for a new manager in Govan to an end.

Rangers on verge of appointing Russell Martin as new head coach

The 39-year-old former Southampton boss will be installed in the Ibrox hotseat in the next 48 hours, barring any last-minute hitches. The appointment of a new man at the helm is the latest in a series of major changes at the club. An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday, when he said that the recruitment of a new head coach would come to a conclusion 'in the coming days'. Outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo Ancelotti, and Martin were the two frontrunners for the post, vacated by Philippe Clement in February, with former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson taking over to the end of the season, which ended trophyless. However, it is the former MK Dons and Swansea boss, who had a short loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, who will be tasked with wrestling the power back from the other side of the city where Celtic this season won their 13th William Hill Premiership title in 14 seasons and have a stranglehold on Scottish football. However, many Rangers fans have revealed some dismay at the notion of Martin's arrival. The former Scotland international brought Southampton up to the Premier League through the play-offs in 2024 but was sacked in December as they headed back towards the Championship with one win from their first 16 games. Chris Hughton, Martin's boss at Norwich, offered a glowing character reference, saying on talkSPORT: 'If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known of course, for playing a certain way, very expansive in the way that he wants to play, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds. 'But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far. 'I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect that he can. I saw him recently, and he was in good form and really looking forward to getting back into the game. 'I think he's had a few offers. So this is somebody that's still very respected in the game, and of course, the rollercoaster in management, there are always going to be ups and downs, but he's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch. 'He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings that we had and, of course, he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players. 'So no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics. And he was somebody that, as he improved in his career as a player, is of course very much looking to improve the same way in management.'

Mystery over ex-Rangers coach's next move as he ‘takes charge of new club days after having talks with Bayer Leverkusen'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HE looked set to swap one top European club for another after his short managerial stint in Belgium came to an end. But despite reportedly having talks with Bayer Leverkusen lined up, this former Rangers coach has in fact been spotted 6,000 miles away instead. 1 He was Philippe Clement's right-hand man at Ibrox Credit: Getty Andries Ulderink, previously Philippe Clement's No.2 at Ibrox, was most recently the manager Antwerp - until a few days ago. The Dutchman took over as boss in March - less than three months after his Gers exit - but his time in the dugout is over already, having won just two out of his 13 games in charge. Antwerp chiefs decided not to extend his contract beyond this season which led to questions around his next move. According to Voetbal International, Ulderink revealed he was set to travel to Germany for discussions with Bayer Leverkusen about being Erik Ten Hag's new assistant manager. It's claimed the pair know each other well, and the ex-Man Utd and Ajax gaffer - who replaced Xabi Alonso in the hot-seat last week - is keen to work with him in the Bundesliga. But in a bizarre turn of events, Ulderink, 55, looks set to make a swift return to management in South Africa instead. The experienced coach has been spotted taking a training session at one of his former clubs - Cape Town FC - and local reports suggest his appointment will be announced imminently. It's an unusual move at this time of the season as he takes charge just days before the relegation play-offs. The Citizens finished second-bottom in the league and will battle it out in a three-team group to hold onto their top flight status. The second and third placed teams in the second tier face off against the club in Cape Town City's position each season, with six games played in total - each side playing one another home and away. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed The team which finishes top of the group will compete in the top division next season. The play-offs get underway on June 11, with Cape Town City's first game scheduled against Casric Stars three days later. They then face their first game against Orbit College on June 18. It's unclear at this stage whether or not Ulderink will stay in South Africa beyond the play-offs, or if he plans to take up the job at Bayer Leverkusen after helping his old club steer clear of the drop.
