50,000 security personnel, anti-drone systems deployed for Kanwar Yatra in UP
Such an elaborate security bandobast, made on the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, was earlier put in place only during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj earlier this year and the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya in January 2024.
Also, nearly 29,500 CCTV cameras have been installed along the key routes and major congregation points to enhance vigilance, it is learnt.
The security personnel on the ground are drawn from the Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC), Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Quick Response Team (QRT) among others.
They include 39,965 male constables, 8,541 women constables, 1,424 home guards, 587 gazetted officers, 2,040 male inspectors, 1,486 women sub-inspectors and 13,520 sub-inspectors.
CM Adityanath reviewed the preparations and issued instructions to ensure arrangements for security, healthcare, sanitation, drinking water and traffic management.
As many as 395 high-tech drones, including anti-drone systems and tethered drones, are transmitting real-time video feeds directly to the police headquarters in Lucknow.
Tethered drones, which hover in a fixed position for extended periods, are proving particularly effective in monitoring dense crowds and enabling quick response in case of emergencies, the officials said.
The control room has been established at the DGP office on the lines of the Maha Kumbh Mela.
An eight-member social media surveillance team is also at work to continuously monitor online platforms for rumours, misleading information and sensitive posts. The team's mandate includes promptly alerting the district officials and ensuring swift removal of objectionable online content.
A separate control room team monitors inputs from electronic media, UP-112 helpline, and other channels to ensure seamless coordination and prompt response.
Details such as police officers' contact numbers, traffic diversion plans, and all Kanwar Yatra-related guidelines have been shared with the public through hoardings, newspapers, and social media.
For effective interstate coordination, a dedicated WhatsApp group comprising officials from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan has been created. This group facilitates an exchange of real-time information on route conditions, security updates, and crowd management plans.
The anti-drone systems detect unauthorised drones by using radar, sensors, and other advanced technologies. Once detected, these systems disrupt the drone's communication link through jamming, rendering it inoperable or physically destroying the drone using lasers or missiles.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed indigenous solutions like the D4S system which is capable of tracking, intercepting, and neutralising hostile drones with high precision, the officials added.
Tethered drones are connected to a ground-based power source via a cable, allowing them to remain airborne for extended durations without battery limitations. The tether also provides greater stability in windy conditions for continuous surveillance and communication in sensitive areas.

COIMBATORE: Following the arrest of Coimbatore serial bomb blast case accused A Sadiq alias Tailor Raja,50, a team from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) here conducted a house search at Vijayapura in Karnataka on Monday. According to sources, the ATS team seized valid documents including Aadhaar card, PAN card, and driving licence of Sadiq Raja, who had changed his name to Shahjahan Shaik. "He supplied the IED bombs to the designated Al-Umma cadres in February 1998. After escaping from Coimbatore, he moved to Cholapur in Uttar Pradesh. Later, he relocated to Hubballi in Karnataka where he worked as a tailor and changed his name to Shajahan Makkandar. There, he married and had three children. He subsequently moved to Vijayapura in Karnataka where he ran a chilli business under the name Shahjahan Shaik," said a source. Sadiq alias Tailor Raja, who had been evading arrest for 27 years, was apprehended by the Coimbatore city police from Vijayapura on July 9. He was later handed over to the ATS, Coimbatore, which took him into custody for five days. "He confessed to his role in three murders and his involvement in the 1998 Coimbatore serial blast," said a senior police officer. After five days in custody, he was produced before the judicial magistrate court-V on Monday evening and was remanded in judicial custody until July 24. Sources confirmed that he had not been involved in any terror activities since the 1998 Coimbatore car blast, focusing entirely on his family life. "He was shocked when the police traced him after 27 years. He cried and told the police they could have arrested him earlier as he had built a good family life. He had purchased a plot in Vijayapura where he planned to construct a house," said a source. He had also created a Facebook account under the name 'Shahjahan Shaik,' believing that the police wouldn't be able to trace him through social media due to his name change from Sadiq alias Tailor Raja.

More than half of all international students last year studied in four countries: the United States, Canada, Britain and Australia, according to Project Atlas 2024, a research portal focused on student mobility. The United States – home to elite universities such as Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford – was the top destination in 2024, hosting a record 1,126,690 students, according to the portal, which is run by the Institute of International Education. But immigration policy changes in these destinations, including limits on international student intake, visa revocation plans and deportations, could reshape the education landscape. Strict visa rules Since taking office in January, US President Donald Trump has revoked and then reinstated the visas of thousands of international students as part of his hardline immigration agenda. High-profile arrests, including of Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil for three months, followed Trump's orders to deport non-citizen students with pro-Palestinian or anti-Israel views. In May, the administration paused the scheduling of student visa appointments overseas before resuming them in June with increased social-media vetting of applicants. The American Council on Education said the pause on visas 'would send a message that our nation no longer welcomes talented students and scholars from other countries'. International students, mostly from China and India, contributed $50 billion in tuition fees and other living expenses in 2023, a revenue stream at risk due to Trump's crackdown on student visas. Last year, Canada introduced a cap on new international student permits, leading to a drop in numbers from India, Nigeria and the Philippines in particular. Countries with growing numbers of students enrolling at British schools include Nigeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Where are students looking to enrol? Universities in the Asia-Pacific region are offering grants and admissions for international students. Japan's Osaka University has offered tuition waivers and grants to American students and researchers who wish to transfer. The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology has pledged unconditional admission to international students displaced from Harvard. New Delhi: In a major development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh and the United States on Sunday to import 7,00,000 tonnes of high-quality wheat annually from the United States at competitive prices for the next five years. It is important to note that the deal was signed ahead of third-round tariff talks between Bangladesh and the US in the last week of July. The second round of talks were inconclusive after the US imposed conditions to increase certain security cooperation to sign a non-disclosure tariff deal. The US has already announced that it will continue joint military exercises with Bangladesh. The MoU to import wheat was signed by Md Abul Hasanat Humayun Kabir, Director General of the Food Department, on behalf of the Bangladesh government, and Joseph K. Sower, Vice President of the US Wheat Association, on behalf of the United States, in the presence of Bangladesh's Food Adviser, Ali Imam Majumdar. Speaking at the event, Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder said that this MoU will create opportunities to build trust and create broader areas of mutual trade cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States, and the people of both countries will benefit. 'This MoU was signed between Bangladesh and the United States to ensure the overall food security, nutritional quality, and food supply of the country', the Bangladesh interim government said in a statement. The US, on the same day, announced that it will continue joint military exercises with Bangladesh. 'The Armed Forces of Bangladesh and the United States military will continue their longstanding partnership this summer through three joint exercises and the delivery of a new capability that will reinforce our common security interests. These efforts help to make the United States and Bangladesh stronger, and the region safer,' the US Embassy in Dhaka said in a statement. 'For the fourth year in a row, the Bangladesh Army and U.S. Army Pacific will conduct Exercise Tiger Lightning. Through realistic training, our soldiers will develop readiness for counterterrorism, peacekeeping, jungle operations, medical evacuations and countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs)', it added. 'Tiger Shark (part of the Flash Bengal series) is a joint training exercise where our two countries' Special Forces practice combat tasks. The exercise, ongoing since 2009, will feature patrol boat handling and small arms marksmanship that will strengthen Bangladesh's Special Warfare Diving and Salvage and the Para Commando Brigade ability to respond to crises. One of the highlights of this combined exercise is the use of U.S. equipment by both countries', the statement said. 'Exercise Pacific Angel: This will be the fourth iteration of Pacific Angel with Bangladesh. It will highlight one of the hallmarks of our defense relationship, our C-130 fleets, which are critical in disaster response airdrops and air mobility operations. The exercise also focuses on Search and Rescue (SAR) and Aeromedical operations further developing Bangladesh's ability to respond to humanitarian disasters', the statement said. 'RQ-21 Program Launch: The United States is working with Bangladesh's Army and Navy to develop an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) capability for Bangladesh. A Bangladesh Regiment comprised of Army and Navy personnel will operate the new RQ-21 Blackjack system. This joint effort will enable Bangladesh to monitor its maritime domain, secure its borders, and conduct peacekeeping missions', the statement said.
