Guernsey FC and Jersey Bulls return to FA Cup

BBC News26-06-2025
Guernsey FC will play in the FA Cup for the first time in eight years - and could meet Jersey Bulls in the competition. The Green Lions have not played in the world's oldest knockout tournament since 2016 after pulling out for financial reasons. Meanwhile Jersey Bulls have returned to the tournament after withdrawing last season due to issues with travel logistics. The Channel Island rivals could meet as early as August's extra preliminary round - the two club teams have never faced one another before. "It's been a long time since we entered the FA Cup," Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance told BBC Radio Guernsey."Financially it costs us, it's not all the bright lights and excitement everyone thinks - you have to win about seven games to even remotely have a chance of earning any income, so those extra games do cost you, but that aside it's exciting and it brings a fresh impetus to the season."It's the most famous club competition in the world and it's got so much history."We've been lucky enough to play in it, the trophy came over here once and it was amazing."You can only dream of getting to a certain level, but teams at our level have done it so there's always that dream."
Jersey Bulls will play in the FA Trophy for the first time, having won promotion to the Isthmian League last season after winning the Combined Counties Premier South play-offs. Bulls were knocked out of the FA Vase by eventual winners Whitstable Town in the third round last season and will start in the FA Trophy's first qualifying round - they could face sides from the National League if they are able to make the third round proper.Guernsey FC will also play in the FA Vase this season after their relegation from the Isthmian League to the Southern Combination Premier Division. They are eligible for the competition for the first time since they made the semi-finals back in 2013, when they lost 4-1 on aggregate to Spennymoor.

BBC Breakfast star's secret job revealed and it's worlds away from presenting

BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty were left in disbelief as they found out what their co-star gets up to away from the morning show BBC Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt revealed details about his colleague's role away from the programme during Saturday's edition of the early morning show. ‌ Charlie and co-presenter Naga Munchetty were back to deliver the weekend's headlines and various features when sports journalist Ben Croucher joined them on the sofa. ‌ Ben had been delivering his sports round-up which covered the latest cricket news from the Oval, the AIG Women's Open golf tournament in Porthcawl, the Formula One action at the Hungarian Grand Prix and the British Lions in Australia. ‌ Charlie said to him: "Lots to look forward to there Ben. You are a man of many talents I have only recently discovered because you are a fully qualified football referee?" Ben confirmed: "Fully qualified football referee in my spare time - just at the grassroots level, nothing too elaborate.", reports the Express. ‌ Naga added: "That's the most important part - that's how it all starts." Ben went on to explain how it was now the beginning of the FA Cup preliminary rounds and he made his FA Cup debut exactly a year ago in an extra preliminary round. He revealed: "I was the man with the flag in front of the benches, getting a bit of grief from the crowd - it was great fun. Honest!". ‌ Charlie chuckled before responding: "Really." Ben confirmed: "Yes it was - it was a great experience." Charlie concluded: "It's the beginning of an amazing journey isn't it? For someone somewhere it's going to be an extraordinary time." Ben explained that whilst the FA Cup final might take place in May, the entire process begins the previous August "at the grassroots level", before viewers were treated to a documentary chronicling the history of the massive sporting spectacle. ‌ This comes after Friday's BBC Breakfast when Charlie and Naga discussed the heartbreaking death of Graham Thorpe. The cricket icon, who would have turned 56, was being honoured in a special fixture. ‌ Following a chat with sports correspondent Mike Bushell, Naga remarked: "You've led us very nicely into talking about the cricket legend Graham Thorpe, who's going to be honored later at the overall test match between England and India in support of the mental health charity, Mind." Charlie added: "The former England and Surrey cricketer will be celebrated on what would have been his 56th birthday. "Graham took his own life in August last year after struggling with anxiety and depression for many years. Our reporter John McGuire has been speaking to Brent's family and loved ones." After the segment, Charlie and Naga chatted with their colleague John, who was at The Oval, about the outstanding career of Graham, who passed away on August 4 last year following his battle with depression and anxiety.

Work completed on football club's new road in Mousehole

Work to create a new access road for a football club has been completed in time for the start for the new season. Mousehole AFC will now have direct access to the nearby B3315, after previously having a small single-lane track which had become pothole-ridden. The club failed to raise the reported six-figure funds needed to build the road for Interiora Trungle Parc and The Prince of Wales saw a newspaper story about the club's struggles and set up a consortium of businesses to fund the project in full. Project lead Simon Taylor said after "months of hard work behind the scenes, and a month of incredible effort" seeing the road completed was "a real pinch-me moment". Mr Taylor said: "As a club we could not be more pleased, and I know that the local residents will soon see the benefits of this new access and from speaking to many, I know how much this will change their lives for the better."Thank you to everyone who has made this happen, and of course, a special mention to HRH Prince Wales for getting this momentous project underway." It's hoped the new road will reduce congestion in the nearby village of Paul and provide easier access for supporters. Work has finished and the road will be open for the club's FA Cup fixture against Bridgwater United on Saturday afternoon.

The FA Cup has been displayed at a non-league football club as part of its 150th anniversary side Harwich and Parkeston FC are returning to the competition for the first time since 2019, facing AFC Dunstable in the extra preliminary round on chairman Tony Armstrong said the display of the trophy was instrumental in showing how far the club had come since nearly going out of existence 23 years ago."It's the hard work from volunteers that has resurrected the club," he said. The club opened its doors to its youth teams and the public to come to see the iconic president Terry Francis said: "It's an honour for the club and inspiring for young people and non-league supporters."Supporter Mark, 38, who has been taking his daughter Holly, 11, to matches since she was born, said it was surreal to see the trophy, especially at his home team manager Matt Carmichael said: "A successful [cup] run would mean a lot to the club financially."He said the club was on a good trajectory, following their promotion to Premier Division of the Essex Senior League, and the "sky is the limit."
