Malaysia-led AICHR workshops in Jakarta to advance peace, human rights in Asean
JAKARTA: The Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), led by Malaysia with co-proponents Indonesia and Thailand, on Wednesday (Aug 13) began a series of workshops in Jakarta on conflict prevention, peacebuilding and human rights.
In a statement, Malaysia's Foreign Ministry said the workshops, held from Wednesday to Aug 15, are part of the "AICHR Regional Training Programme on Human Rights - Workshops on the Intersection Between Conflict and Human Rights: Pathways and Approaches to Peace in Asean.'
"The three Jakarta workshops will discuss mechanisms for conflict prevention and peacebuilding, international peace frameworks and approaches, and protecting human rights of all in conflict situations, while using a case study simulation to explore practical applications of Asean's peace initiatives,' the statement read.
The Foreign Ministry stated that the sessions are part of a six-part programme to develop an Asean framework for conflict prevention, crisis management and peacebuilding, in line with the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean 2045: Our Shared Future, adopted on May 26 this year.
"This initiative is part of Malaysia's inclusivity and sustainability agenda to promote and protect regional peace and security as the 2025 Asean Chair,' it stated.
Participants include Asean representatives, diplomats, academics, peace mediators, experts and civil society members.
The workshops aim to foster dialogue, exchange good practices, and strengthen collaborative approaches to advance inclusive and rights-based approaches to peace across the region, the statement read. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Malaysia faces a 19 per cent tariffs from the United States since it refuses to cross the 'red lines' in its negotiations with Washington, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abd Aziz has said. Speaking in an interview with US-based CNBC's 'Squawk Box Asia', Tengku Zafrul said that Malaysia will however not retaliate since the US is too important as an investor and export destination for Malaysia and Asean. 'We've seen that there were some red lines that we discussed during our tariff negotiation, and they understood,' he said. 'And I mean, that's, I guess, one of the reasons why we got 19 per cent is because we don't meet up with all the requests. We didn't agree with all the requests.' On August 1, the US announced it has imposed a reduced tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysian imports — revised from the initially scheduled 25 per cent. Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that Malaysia will not bow to pressure that could undermine national policies, including negotiations with the US related to tariffs. He said that although investment and trade with the US are significant, Malaysia has a 'red line' in negotiations — namely the Bumiputera policy — which must not be compromised, even if it is perceived as 'discriminatory' by external parties. In addition, Tengku Zafrul also acknowledged market concern over possible sectoral tariffs, noting former US president Donald Trump has floated duties as high as 300 per cent on semiconductor products. He said semiconductor tariffs remain at 0 per cent, but warned that sharp hikes would hit Malaysia and its regional peers. 'If you look at the supply chain of semiconductor, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, I mean all the Asean countries are quite involved in that supply chain into the US, into China, into Europe. And this will have an impact to not just for Malaysia or for Asean, but globally as well,' he said. On diversification, he said Malaysia is pressing ahead with multiple trade tracks to reduce over-reliance on not only US, but also China. Tengku Zafrul also disclosed Malaysia has concluded a trade deal with South Korea that is slated to be signed at Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) or a leaders' summit. Talks with the European Union have resumed after stalling in 2012, and engagement with the Gulf Cooperation Council has begun, he added. He said Malaysia is also pushing to upgrade the Asean-India Trade in Goods Agreement and has concluded a third-version upgrade of the Asean-China Free Trade Agreement with green and digital chapters. Tengku Zafrul added that with intra-Asean trade still below 25 per cent, an Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement — set for discussion in Malaysia on the 28th — will be critical to pull more small and medium enterprises into regional trade.

Egypt rejects participating in displacement of Palestinians
CAIRO: Egypt has reiterated its categorical rejection of the displacement of the Palestinian people and called on countries not to participate in this heinous crime. According to the Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA), the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that it "is following with deep concern the recent reports of Israeli consultations with some countries regarding accepting the displacement of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip to their territory. This is part of an unacceptable Israeli policy aimed at emptying the Palestinian land of its inhabitants, occupying it, and liquidating the Palestinian cause." The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified in a statement issued on Sunday that Egypt, through its contacts with countries that have reportedly agreed to receive the Palestinian people, has indicated its rejection of these reprehensible plans. Egypt reiterated its categorical rejection of any Israeli plans aimed at displacing the Palestinian people from their historic land, whether in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, under any pretext, justification, or label, whether the displacement is forced or "voluntary" through policies of starvation, land confiscation, settlement, and making life impossible on Palestinian land. Egypt also affirmed that it will not accept or participate in such displacement, considering it a historical injustice with no moral or legal justification. It will not allow it, as it will inevitably lead to the liquidation of the Palestinian cause. It called on all peace-loving countries of the world to refrain from involvement in this immoral crime, which contravenes all principles of international humanitarian law, constitutes a war crime and ethnic cleansing, and represents a clear violation of the four Geneva Conventions. It also warned of the historical and legal responsibility that will fall on any party involved in this heinous crime, and the political consequences and repercussions it may have with regional and international dimensions. – Bernama-Wafa
