Wings of Wonder: Accessibility for all who want to travel

Yahoo08-05-2025

Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — The Rapid City Regional Airport partnered with local organizations for Wings of Wonder.
The event's goal is to help people with disabilities easily navigate the airport from the moment they park their car until they find their seat on the plane.

The Rapid City Regional Airport has steps in place to make sure everyone feels welcome. Sunflower lanyards help identify people with hidden disabilities who might need the same assistance.
'We wanted to get involved in that early, many airports across the country are now involved in that, it all looks the same. To the traveling public, when they show up and they've got that lanyard on, it's a cue to those folks who are working here that they may need some extra care,' Rapid City Airport director Patrick Dame said.
These lanyards will help airport employees in baggage and the terminal, along with TSA members so they can assist those with both visible and hidden disabilities.
'They're going to take things a little bit slower in the explanation process. So sometimes with checking in, that helps. Trying to get your seats and your baggage all checked in, that is a stressful process for someone with disabilities,' Disability Awareness and Accessibility Committee Member Tony Russell said.
'You know, from the airport's vantage point we need to be here for everybody. And if there are folks that need a little extra out of it, we want to make sure we're getting them the experience that they need,' Dame said.
The Rapid City Disability Awareness and Accessibility Committee works to make sure everyone in the air has access in everyday life.
'Advocating for those people with disabilities and helping make some of these processes easier on us so we can enjoy reaping that, not only everything the beautiful Black Hills has to offer but we can get out and travel and see what other great things are out there,' Russell said.
To be able to participate in the Sunflower Lanyard Program, all you have to do is ask an employee for one near the rentals before starting your journey.

National Donut Day glazes KELOLAND

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — While National Donut Day is a nationwide holiday, local businesses are getting a taste of it in Sioux Falls. 'It's kind of like the Super Bowl for donut shops. We definitely look forward to it every year,' said Ben Duenwald, Owner of Flyboy Donuts. South Dakota's fall pheasant outlook is 'very positive' Yonutz Donuts and Ice Cream opened in Sioux Falls last month, just in time for the occasion. The franchise has gained popularity due to its signature 'Smashed Donut' which combines a warm pressed donut with ice cream filling. At 3 p.m. Friday, the first 50 customers at Yonutz will get a free big donut, and then at 7 p.m., the first 50 people can get a free simply smashed donut. But the celebration is more than just an excuse to eat donuts. The day originates back to World War I when female Salvation Army volunteers would serve soldiers on the front lines. 'They could treat the troops in the trenches quickly by giving them something homemade,' Duenwald said. 'A ring donut is easy to cook because it's a lot of surface area. That's why there's a hole in it on it.' Duenwald says Friday's donut holiday is the biggest day for them. On Friday morning they made over 20,000 donuts in preparation, and they continue to prepare them throughout the day. Flyboy Donuts now has five locations throughout Sioux Falls and Duenwald says they've had thousands of people throughout all their locations. 'I've realized that donuts are more of the American fabric than even the hot dog or the apple pie, in my opinion,' said Duenwald. 'Everybody has a memory, a nostalgic memory with donuts or the donut shop they might have grown up with.' Other donut shops and bakeries in Sioux Falls include Mr. Donuts, Queen City Bakery and CNC Food Factory. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. GFP wants Purple Heart vets to use state parks for free

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Members of the U.S. armed forces who suffered wounds and received Purple Heart decorations may soon get into South Dakota state campgrounds and rec areas for free. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission on Thursday approved granting lifetime entrance permits to Purple Heart recipients. The commission also decided that Purple Heart recipients can stay at state campsites for half-price. The commission took the actions Thursday during a meeting in Aberdeen. The changes came at the request of Connie Stone, who filed a petition asking for them. She is coordinator for veteran services at South Dakota State University in Brookings. The South Dakota Legislature's Rules Review Committee will have final say on whether the rules take effect. The six lawmakers are scheduled to next meet on Tuesday, June 10 in Pierre. The commission's pending entrance rule states: 'A resident of this state who is a recipient of the Purple Heart is also entitled to a free lifetime park entrance license. The resident shall fill out a form provided by the Division of Parks and Recreation and mail it to the Pierre office with a photocopy of the Purple Heart citation or award certificate.' A companion pending rule would reduce the fee for camping. It states: 'A resident of this state who is a recipient of the Purple Heart is also entitled to purchase a camping permit, campsite electrical service, and camping cabin permit for one-half price upon completion of a form provided by the Division of Parks and Recreation accompanied by a photocopy of the Purple Heart citation or award certificate. These discounts are for the use of the recipient only, and are not transferable.' Al Nedved, deputy director for the state Division of Parks and Recreation, spoke in support of the proposed rules on Thursday. He said approximately 150 to 200 Purple Heart recipients currently live in South Dakota. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Celebrating beauty during Forever 605 Day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It's June 5th, but some South Dakotans may know it as Forever 605 Day. It's a time set aside to take in the beauty and amenities across the state. Margaret Rush of Sioux Falls spent this 605 day taking in the rushing waterfalls at Falls Park. Lincoln County's 2026 budget sees $500K cut forecast 'Family is visiting here, so we made a big to do to come out here and enjoy Falls Park,' Rush said. 605 is the area code across the state, which gives people a reason to come together. 'It's just a day for all of us to say, 'Hey, we have all of this. We are one,' and that's what 605 Day is,' Experience Sioux Falls CEO Teri Schmidt said. Schmidt says it's a time to build community pride. 'There's a lot of great passion and support for our community in so many ways. This is just another day to say, 'Hey, we got it going on in Sioux Falls. This is a great place to be,'' Schmidt said. Schmidt says tourism is starting to see a slight increase, so whether you visit Falls Park, the Arc of Dreams, local wildlife or downtown, it's as good of a time as any to enjoy what Sioux Falls has to offer. 'To us it's about hey, let's get out and celebrate Sioux Falls. Enjoy the art, the recreation, the parks, Falls Park, go shopping, go eating someplace, your favorite diner,' Schmidt said. And as Rush takes in the beautiful views of Falls Park, she'll make sure she enjoys the nice weather while she still can. 'Winter will be here before you know it,' Rush said.
