BYD Atto 2: Malaysia getting larger 51.1kWh battery, stalk drive selector, and more
This is based on the EV's staging site for Malaysia that we have discovered online.

In many ways, this discovery feels like a deja vu as we found the staging site more or less in the same way as per BYD Dolphin's price list ahead of its official launch event in 2023.
However, we couldn't find the price list for Atto 2, though…we guess BYD Sime Motors people can take a breather now.
If the information on the staging site is accurate, then the new EV will be released into our market with just one variant called the Atto 2 Premium.
The biggest difference that the Malaysian unit has when compared to the existing version for Europe and China is that its LFP-based BYD Blade battery has a higher capacity.
At the moment, the Yuan Up in China is being offered with either a 32kWh or a 45.12kWh battery pack.
In Europe, the Atto 2 is currently available with a 45.12kWh battery pack while a version with a higher capacity battery pack will be offered in 'coming months'.
Now, let's circle back to Malaysia: the staging site said that the Atto 2 Premium for our market is equipped with a larger 51.13kWh battery pack.
This allows the new EV to deliver up to 410km of NEDC-rated range or around 340km if you convert that figure to WLTP.
The Atto 2 Premium for Malaysia does have a front-wheel drive setup with a 130kW (174hp) electric motor that also produces 290Nm of torque, similar to the European and high-spec Chinese options.
The staging site also said that the Malaysian unit is capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.
Other details that the staging site has also listed include Macpherson strut front suspension, torsion beam rear suspension, and 17-inch wheels with 215/60 tyres.
In addition to that, the site has also listed three colours for Atto 2, such as Ski White, Harbour Grey, and Breeze Green.

As we browse around the staging site looking for more details, we notice something interesting about interior photos that were published on the site. Specifically, it appears that the Malaysian unit may come with a stalk drive selector.
As a comparison, the drive selector for the European and Chinese units is located on the centre console. BYD essentially used the same drive selector from M6 for Atto 2 in these markets.

Given the difference, the button layout on the centre console for the Malaysian unit will also be different if the picture on the staging site is accurate. Other features that might be included with Atto 2 for the Malaysian market Image taken from Atto 2's staging site for the Malaysian market.
Aside from the price tag, there are still a number of details missing from the staging site. That being said, we believe that the unit that Malaysia is getting will be similar to the right-hand drive (RHD) unit for the Hong Kong market.
For one, the HK unit features a 51.13kWh battery and stalk drive selector. If our hunch is on point, then we might be seeing the Atto 2 for the Malaysian market to also come with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment display, and a 50W wireless phone charger.
Based on the HK unit, the Atto 2 for our market may also come with 11kW AC charging module alongside the support for DC charging speed of up to 82kW. It may also have a 400L boot space which can be expanded further to 1,340L once you fold the EV's rear seats.

Amazon CEO on Tariffs: ‘It's Impossible to Know What Will Happen'
The jury may be still out on the impact of tariffs on Amazon's business, but its customers kept spending throughout the second quarter. Rehashing some of the narrative from the company's first quarter earnings call, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that despite the tariffs, the e-commerce giant has not seen diminishing demand or meaningful price appreciation in the first half of the year. 'That could change in the second half,' Jassy said. 'There are a lot of things that we don't know.' Although Jassy said tariffs' effect on retail prices and consumption has often been 'wrong and misreported,' the CEO also acknowledged 'it's impossible to know what will happen,' particularly when it depletes pre-tariff inventory. Jassy was also wishy-washy on the ensuing costs from the tariffs, noting that the company is unsure at who's going to end up absorbing the higher expenses. He noted that with 2 million sellers on its marketplace, there is a range of differing strategies on whether to pass on the higher costs to consumers. The earnings call occurred hours before President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on several U.S. trade partners ahead of Friday's deadline to conjure up new trade agreements. Those tariff rates are expected to kick in Aug. 7. Higher tariffs on goods from China face an Aug. 12 deadline. More than 70 percent of Amazon sellers and brands say they source their products from China, according to a survey conducted last year by Amazon seller software platform Jungle Scout. The tariffs that have been embedded since April have not slowed down sales at the Big Tech firm. Amazon's second quarter showed strong growth, with net sales increasing 13 percent to $167.7 billion in the second quarter, up from $148 billion in the year-ago period. Net income increased to $18.2 billion in the second quarter, or $1.68 per diluted share, compared with $13.5 billion, or $1.26 per diluted share, in second quarter 2024. Jassy highlighted some wins across Amazon's logistics operation, particularly as the company continues to restructure its inbound fulfillment network of warehouses near major ports to cut ground transportation expenses. According to the CEO, Amazon increased the share of orders moving through direct lanes—where packages go straight from fulfillment to delivery without extra stops—by over 40 percent year-over-year. 'We've also reduced the average distance packages traveled by 12 percent and lowered handling touches per unit by nearly 15 percent,' Jassy said. 'We've made progress on order consolidation with more products positioned locally, we're able to pack more items into each box and send fewer packages per order. That has helped drive higher units per box and improved overall cost to serve.' On the delivery end, which includes the company's $4 billion commitment to expanding same-day services in 4,000 rural communities, Amazon delivered 30 percent more items same day or next day in the U.S. than during the same period of last year. The faster deliveries have helped push Amazon's third-party sellers to an all-time high of 62 percent of units sold in the quarter, according to Jassy. Amazon's recently unveiled generative AI model for its warehouse robotics, Deepfleet, also got some shine in the call. Jassy said the model improves robot travel efficiency by 10 percent. 'At our scale, it's a big deal. DeepFleet acts like a traffic management system to coordinate robots' movements to find optimal paths and reduce bottlenecks,' Jassy said. 'For customers, it means faster delivery times and lower costs.' Although the firm's second quarter was strong on the surface, investors were not too impressed with Amazon's overall results. Stock declined nearly 7 percent in after-hours trading Thursday, largely due to cash cow Amazon Web Services (AWS) underperforming competitors. Despite forecasting third-quarter sales ahead of Wall Street estimates, Amazon issued a soft operating profit guidance of $15.5 billion to $20.5 billion in the period ending in September, compared with an average analyst estimate of $19.4 billion. Sales are forecast to be $174 billion to $179.5 billion, the company said Thursday in a statement. Estimates, on average, were $173.2 billion. The third quarter will include statistics from Prime Day, which took place from July 8-11—the longest iteration of the event Amazon has held. Jassy said the four-day shopping extravaganza drove records across sales, number of items sold and number of Prime signups in the three weeks leading up to the event.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro: Revised Leak Reveals Unprecedented Design Secret
The next iPhones are less than a month away. A recent report that seemed to relate to the iPhone 17 Air has now been updated to indicate that no, it's about the iPhone 17 Pro, after all. But there's something much more interesting hiding in the shadows of the new story. You can read my original story here, but the new update includes something that no iPhone has ever had before: different battery sizes for the iPhone based on where it will be sold. The news came from prolific leaker Majin Bu, who perhaps spoke too soon with their latest leak, which claimed to show the battery for the upcoming slim phone, nicknamed the iPhone 17 Air. They've now had to correct what they said. 'Due to a miscommunication with my source, the information I reported yesterday is incorrect,' Majin Bu has now admitted on X. Instead, they're directing readers to their latest post. In a scorched-earth policy, the original post now links instead to one headlined 'iPhone 17 Pro: Unveiling the New Battery with Steel Case,' which reveals that the information was referring to quite a different phone, the iPhone 17 Pro. The new post does not mention the mistake and indeed the word Air never appears in the story. Some of the new story is similar to the original except there's no longer any reference to the capacity of the new battery. Instead, there's an arguably much more interesting: that the L-shaped battery will come in two different versions. As you will know, U.S. iPhones no longer have physical SIM card trays. Until now, that extra real estate has been filled by a spacer. According to this updated report, for the very first time, Apple will make two different iPhone batteries: one for the U.S. market and a smaller one for international territories (which Majin Bu refers to as the Chinese version, though it's not thought that the eSIM only option for U.S. iPhones is about to be replicated anywhere else. 'The version for the U.S. market is wider, designed without the need to accommodate a physical SIM. This layout maximizes internal space, with a battery extended in width for optimized capacity without compromises,' the new report says. Which means, you've got it, U.S. iPhones could have longer battery life than other countries' models. By how much, we don't know, but every extra bit of battery size is to be welcomed.

This $30 Gamepad Is the First to Support a Critical Switch 2 Feature
GuliKit is now offering the Elves 2 wireless gamepad. It's an surprisingly high-end controller with an affordable $30 price tag, though it's most notable for its Switch 2 wake-from-sleep functionality, which other third-party gamepads currently lack. One of the most annoying parts of the original Nintendo Switch was its remote wake functionality. Not only was it somewhat unreliable (even with official Joy-Cons), but a lot of third-party controllers just couldn't wake up the console. So, if you used an unofficial controller, there's a good chance that you couldn't turn on the Nintendo Switch from the comfort of your couch. Instead, you may have been forced to stand up, walk over to the docked Switch, and press its power button like some sort of 20th century caveman. Nintendo revised its wake-from-sleep protocol for the Switch 2. It's more reliable than it was before, which is awesome. But the downside, unfortunately, is that existing third-party controllers like the GuliKit Elves 2 Pro do not support Nintendo's new protocol. GuliKit cracked the code to the Switch 2's new wake-up protocol last month. Now, the company is releasing its first gamepad with Switch 2 wake-from-sleep functionality—the $30 Elves 2. The Elves 2 is practically identical to the $50 Elves 2 Pro that launched last year. Both gamepads feature Hall-effect joysticks, a Sega Saturn-like "floating" D-pad, six-axis gyro, and the ability to wake a docked Nintendo Switch from sleep. But Elves 2 adds Switch 2 wake-from-sleep support, which is a feature that the older "Pro" controller still lacks (though this discrepancy could be resolved by a firmware update at some point). GuliKit cut some corners in order to get the Elves 2 down to its $30 price point, of course, but all of the downgrades are fairly minor. The Elves 2 uses a crappier haptic motor than the Elves 2 Pro, so it doesn't support HD Rumble. It also lacks macro recording functionality, and unlike the Pro model, its buttons can't be remapped. I should take a moment to clarify that these are not just Nintendo Switch controllers. The Elves 2 and Elves 2 Pro are standard Bluetooth controllers, so they work with PCs, smartphones, and Steam Decks, too. You'll need to use an adapter if you want to pair these controllers with an Xbox or PlayStation, however. You can buy the GuliKit Elves 2 controller today for $30. It's sold in red and black colorways. If you want some additional functionality, such as upgraded haptics, spring for the $50 GuliKit Elves 2 Pro. Just know that GuliKit hasn't announced a Switch 2 wake-from-sleep firmware update for the Elves 2 Pro. I don't know whether the Pro controller will actually gain this functionality.
