"Don't know how the Stalin govt can take credit for it," BJP's Tamilisai on Anna University sexual assault case
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] June 2 (ANI): BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan acknowledged the swift legal process in the sexual assault case of Anna University campus, and questioned the Stalin government's claim of credit for it.
She argued that they should instead take responsibility for the incident.
'He has been convicted. There should be no relaxation in his punishment. I want to mention two things- the legal process has been fast, but I don't know how the Stalin government can take credit for it. If they are taking credit for this, then who will take responsibility for the incident?' she said.
She also condemned Chief Minister MK Stalin for referring to opposition leaders as 'clowns.'

Earlier today, a Mahila Court awarded a life sentence for a minimum period of 30 years without remission and a fine of Rs 90,000 to the accused Gnanasekaran, who has been convicted of sexually harassing a student on the Anna University campus in December last year.
Mahila Court judge M Rajalakshmi, who convicted Gnanasekaran on May 28, awarded sentences in respect of each of the 11 charges proved by the prosecution against him.
Public Prosecutor Marry Jayanthi said, 'As far as the Gnanasekaran case is concerned, we have got the verdict today. 30 years without remission have been provided. SIT enquired into the incident; they filed a charge sheet at the Mahila court. April 30 for the first time, affected women took the stage. All evidence was provided, as it was satisfactory for the court; today this judgement has come. The highest punishment is a life sentence for this case, and it has been provided.'
A second-year student of Anna University was sexually assaulted on the Anna University campus in December. After an investigation, the Chennai Police had arrested Gananesekaran in connection with the case.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday hailed the state police, investigating officers and government lawyers for the expeditious verdict in the Anna University sexual assault case.
In a post on X, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that the state's police swiftly pursued the case and justice was delivered in just five months.
Stalin said he had told the police to prevent crime, and if any incident occurs, no criminal should escape. The criminals, he said, should be investigated expeditiously and punished. He also slammed the opposition parties who had made allegations against the ruling DMK over the incident and said attempts were made to play 'cheap politics'.
He said the government has shattered the 'slander' being spread. 'We will always ensure justice and the safety of women,' he said. (ANI)

Sebi issues attachment order against Mehul Choksi for non-payment of penalties

This helped the fraud go unnoticed for funds, which were shown as being used for importing goods, were mostly never returned. Instead, new LoUs were taken to repay the earlier ones, and the money was used for business and personal total value of the fraud reached around Rs 13,850 crore. ED attaches assets of ex-Karnataka co-operative bank chief, wife in Rs 63-crore scam
The Enforcement Directorate on Friday said it has attached assets worth about Rs 14 crore of the former chairman of a Karnataka-based cooperative bank and his wife as part of an alleged Rs 63 crore worth gold loan scam linked money laundering Manjunatha Gowda was arrested by the federal probe agency in April after the agency carried out raids in the former chairman of the Shimoga district co-operative central bank headquartered in Shivamogga is currently lodged in jail under judicial custody. Immovable and movable properties having present market value worth Rs 13.91 crore belonging to Gowda and his wife have been attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in an investigation related to a gold loan scam at the city branch of the cooperative bank, the ED said in a money-laundering case stems from a complaint and chargesheet filed by the Karnataka Police where it was alleged that B Shobha, a former branch manager of the said bank, in conspiracy with other co-accused "diverted" bank funds worth Rs 62.77 modus operandi, as per the police, involved opening "fraudulent" gold loan accounts without the knowledge of the individual account holders, utilising fake, fabricated and forged ED probe found that "large-scale misappropriation of funds took place at the Shimoga district co-operative central bank, city branch which was orchestrated primarily by the branch manager B Shobha on the instructions of R M Manjunatha Gowda".The agency alleged the "proceeds of crime" generated by B Sobha in conspiracy with other co-accused were "laundered" and "handed-over" to "acquired" various movable and immovable properties from the alleged illegal funds and as per a chargesheet filed by the Lokayukta Police, he was also found to be in possession of assets "disproportionate" to his known sources of income, the ED claimed.

Police shoot burglary suspect during arrest bid in Shivamogga
Shivamogga: Police shot and injured a person facing charges of burglary, injuring his left leg, when he refused to surrender during arrest attempt on Friday morning. The accused, identified as Kalkere Manjunath, also known as Kalkere Manja, 47, hails from Bengaluru. The accused has 72 cases against him, ranging from housebreaking and theft, cheating and attempt to murder, Shivamogga SP Mithun Kumar said. Following a house burglary in Gandhi Nagar several months ago, the Jayanagar police received information about his involvement. The victim, Nitin, reported the theft of his vehicle and gold jewellery valued at Rs 11.3 lakh. During an arrest attempt by a police team led by PSI Naveen Kumar from Jayanagar police station, the suspect allegedly assaulted them with a knife, wounding police officer Dyamappa. Despite repeated warnings, he refused to surrender. In self-defence and to protect the lives of our staff, PSI fired a warning shot in the air and then shot the accused in the leg, the IPS officer said. The suspect is receiving medical care at McGann District Hospital, while the injured officer is also receiving treatment. The Vinoba Nagar police station has registered a case.
