Tennis bad boy Bernard Tomic stuns his critics with four-year first as he tries to resurrect his career

Daily Mail6 hours ago

The party was over years ago, and his name remains the object of criticism, not to say ridicule in many quarters, but veteran Australian bad-boy Bernard Tomic is plotting a quiet revival.
It has been some time since he was making headlines, often for the wrong reasons, but he passed a modest professional milestone at the Mallorca Country Club on Tuesday.
And brighter days could lie ahead for the 32-year-old, who has won four ATP titles and reached a high point of No.17 on the world rankings list in 2016.
His Mallorca Open first-round defeat of fellow Australian Rinky Hijikata was his first win on the main Tour since the 2021 Australian Open.
The world No.248, a qualifier at the Iberian tournament, will now face home hope Roberto Bautista Agut.
Having narrowly missed the cut-off for Wimbledon qualifying, Tomic decided not to hang around in the hope of a late withdrawal in London.
Instead, he packed his bags and headed to the Spanish island of Mallorca, home of 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, and what he hoped would be another step on the long road back.
Over the weekend he defeated Jasper De Jong, a Dutchman ranked 93 who recently won a round at the French Open, and Aleksandar Kovacevic, an American who sits at 77, to qualify for an event where the winner pockets A$250,000.
Far from the big stages of sport, Tomic has been slogging it out on the tour backwaters in lower-level and Challenger events in an attempt to break back into the top 100.
It is all a distance from his colourful - and troubled - life in the limelight. The talent was there, he was once heralded as one of Australia's most promising stars, but it was so often overshadowed by brushes with various branches of officialdom, bust-ups with spectators and accusations of tanking.
He even made a much-derided and very short-lived appearance on the TV reality show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here in 2018.
On a darker side, there was the investigation for alleged match-fixing in 2022, though no charges were laid.
Fast forward three years and perhaps a revival stirs.
The Gold Coaster's defeat of Hijikata, who has already qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon, means he will jump to a spot just outside the top 200, which would put him in the frame to play in qualifying for the US Open in New York in late August.

Footy legend Joel Clinton reveals coach's violent dressing room act that made one of the NRL's toughest stars so angry he almost 'ripped his head off'

Penrith premiership prop Joel Clinton has shed light on an explosive incident during his footy career, detailing a heated moment with former Panthers coach Matt Elliott and two of his toughest teammates. Clinton, who played 241 matches for Penrith, opened up about his final season with the Panthers in 2007 under coach Elliott while appearing on the Andy Raymond Unfiltered podcast. 'I remember he kicked a garbage bin across the room after one game,' Clinton recalled. 'We were up at halftime by 18 points or something like that, and we lost that game. 'Matty Elliott was a pretty aggressive coach and he kicked the garbage bin across the room and it ended up hitting big Franky Pritchard straight in the head. 'I remember Franky Pritchard looked over and he wanted to absolutely rip his head off - and Tony Puletua had to grab him and stop him and say "No mate, sit down". 'Lucky Big T was in the room that day because Franky Pritchard has got a bit of a background and he would have done some damage.' Later in the episode, Clinton took aim at former Broncos coach Ivan Henjak for 'f**king him around' during his spell with the club. Clinton was recruited by Wayne Bennett in 2008, but the supercoach moved to the Dragons the following year. 'That next year I really knuckled down,' Clinton said. 'My stats were great, I was one of Brisbane's best forwards, but Ivan Henjak didn't see eye to eye with me.' 'He upset quite a few boys there, I had another year on my contract, but I asked for a release. '[Ex-Panthers coach] Johnny Lang had called me up and asked me to come to Souths for three years on a good deal, good coin, and I knew my time was up with Ivan. 'I asked for three releases, and he said "no, we're keeping you".' Clinton believed that he'd have to see out his entire contract in Brisbane - but then got a shock call from his manager during Mad Monday celebrations. 'It came to the end of 2009, and I got a phone call from my manager, I'd been on the p**s for 24 hours straight, and he said "yeah, they don't want you next year",' Clinton said. 'By then all the salary cap was gone, there was no money left at Souths, there was a little at Wests, but to get the money I was after at 28, I had to go to the UK, purely because of [Ivan Henjak]. 'If he could have f***ed me around any more he would have, I tried three times to get out of that contract, and he wouldn't release me. 'You're at that time of your life where you want to get every cent you can out of the game, and that was the reason I ended up in the UK. 'It was upsetting - and I still hold a bit of a grudge about it to this day.

Two of the AFL's biggest stars texted their coaches with an alarming message - and now you can see their VERY revealing responses

AFL stars Steele Sidebottom and Rory Lobb were recently asked to text their respective coaches on the spot with a request that should have set off alarm bells - and the responses spoke volumes about the two club bosses. As part of a prank on Channel Nine's show Players, Collingwood veteran Sidebottom and Western Bulldogs utility Lobb messaged Craig McRae and Luke Beveridge to see if they could borrow their cars for three days with zero explanation. Both were unsure what the response would be, and Lobb was visibly shocked that Beveridge - who has a reputation as a hard taskmaster - was so accommodating. 'Of course Lobby,' was Beveridge's simple reply, which came with a laughing emoji. Lobb took the emoji to mean his coach might have thought the text wasn't 100 per cent on the level. 'He said he was about to drive it over to me. Feel like he knows I'm a bit of a larrikin,' Lobb said. 'I think he knew that I was taking the p**s because I do that a little bit.' McRae's detailed reply to Sidebottom summed up his caring nature. 'Are you OK? Of course mate, you can have it as long as you need,' he began. 'I've got a guy at Ringwood Mazda (car dealership) who can get you a car if you need one longer. 'Let me know where you want me to drop it (off). Please no burnouts, I've seen you drive. Hope everything is OK.' In April, Lobb sported the AFL's worst haircut - an eye-catching electric-blue dye job - ahead of the 100-year anniversary clash against Collingwood at the MCG. The towering footy star then made that bizarre look tame in comparison by revealing a bright-red lobster dyed on his newly bleached locks. It comes as Sidebottom, 34, continues to palm away father time. He is edging towards 350 career games and has been a standout for the ladder- leading Magpies all year. Meanwhile, McRae showed his emotional side last month in an interview following the sudden passing of Adam Selwood. 'There's no book written on this stuff. We got the news and it was horrible,' McRae said as he fought back tears in a press conference after a win over Adelaide. 'We didn't really know what to do to be honest, other than maybe give it space to see where it fits with all of us. 'It's horrible, there is such sadness....'I just want to send my love to the (entire) Selwood family.'

Beale labels Russell as Lions danger man

Former Australian international Kurtley Beale says Finn Russell is the player that could lead the Lions to victory in the Test who played in all three Tests for the Wallabies in 2013, is set to face the Lions again for Western Force when the tour gets underway in earnest here in Perth on is expected to start the game for Andy Farrell's tourists after helping Bath win their first Premiership title since 1996, a couple of weeks names his squad on 36, told The Australian newspaper,, external 'I played with him at Racing and he's such a mercurial, unpredictable player. And I think with a forward pack like he will have in front of him, he can create a lot of damage.'He's obviously got some exciting backs outside him as well who will thrive off of his delivery, his service. So I'd think he'd be the danger man.'Beale had a stellar international career but infamously slipped when he lined up to take a potential match-winning penalty in the first Test in missed, the Lions won 23-21, and although Australia bounced back to win the second test, they lost the decider and the series.
