North Queensland grazier warns of blackleg disease after cattle die
"I was pretty gutted because I hate to lose one, but when you lose a whole mob like that," Mr Finlay said.
Carcass testing found blackleg, a bacterial disease contracted from soil, to be the cause of death.
Mr Finlay, from Torrens Creek, about 300 kilometres south-west of Townsville, was shocked by the findings.
Blackleg is a spore-forming bacteria that primarily affects younger cattle.
It is almost always fatal within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.
Cases have previously been reported in central and southern Queensland and New South Wales, but rarely in north Queensland.
"I've been in this industry for 40-odd years, and we've never thought to have had the problem," Mr Finlay said.
Hughenden veterinarian Libby Harriman said it was the first confirmed case for her client base in the Torrens Creek area.
"Traditionally, we don't see a lot of blackleg in this area," Dr Harriman said.
"But, we have heard of other cases towards Julia Creek, so anywhere along those lines is obviously in that 'at-risk area' now."
She said outbreaks of the soil-borne bacteria often occurred after soil disturbances and rain.
The north-west has had a favourable wet season, with monsoonal February rain saving what had been a dry 2024.
When livestock eat contaminated feed or soil, spores enter the bloodstream, which leads to blood poisoning and rapid death.
"But [cattle] can actually carry it in their system for a long time, until it's triggered by bruising or other muscle damage," Dr Harriman said.
A Department of Primary Industries spokesperson said blackleg was an endemic disease in Queensland and was not a notifiable disease under the Biosecurity Act 2014, meaning producers were under no obligation to report it.
They said veterinarians often diagnosed blackleg without departmental involvement, so department-recorded cases may not accurately reflect the incidence of disease in the field.
"Current departmental diagnostic data does not show an increase in blackleg diagnoses compared to previous years," the spokesperson said.
Dr Harriman said blackleg cases were not always reported.
"Producers tend to be a little bit cautious about finding an infectious disease on their property for fear of being shut down by Biosecurity Queensland or something like that," she said.
"It's just so important that producers do speak up about these sorts of things and contact your local vet."
Symptoms of the disease include lameness in the hind legs, swelling in large muscles, fever, depression and refusal to eat.
A distinctive symptom is also gas under the skin, which produces a crackling sound when the affected area is touched.
The potentially fatal condition can be prevented with a vaccination, which Dr Harriman encouraged for all cattle, not just those in areas with known cases, as the disease often impacted large numbers at a time.
While blackleg is not contagious from animal to animal, bacteria from a carcass can spread into the soil, which can then be contracted again.
Dr Harriman recommended burning the affected carcass and not dragging it along the ground.
Mr Finlay said his remaining 306 cattle looked healthy and had since been vaccinated.
As he counted the cost of his loss, he encouraged other graziers to follow suit.
"The alternative is just terrible," he said.

GP blames 'rotten' culture in NT Police for Michael Deutrom's death and other officer suicides
A doctor who treated a constable that later took his own life has blamed a "rotten culture" within the Northern Territory Police Force for the suicide, while defending his treatment plan to a coronial inquest. Warning: This story contains references to suicide and self-harm and will be distressing for some readers. Constable Michael Deutrom was one of three NT Police officers who took their own life in the first half 2022. Throughout his career he faced several traumas, including an attempt to rescue a driver from a burning car as a young constable, intense scrutiny over his role in an arrest, and a false sexual assault allegation. A coronial inquest in Darwin is examining the pressures he faced at work and the treatment he received. The inquiry heard Constable Deutrom had taken personal leave from his posting — as one of two officers in the remote Central Australian community of Kintore — where he described feeling like he was constantly "on call", sleeping just three hours per night. General practitioner Justin Sykes had treated Constable Deutrom for anxiety, depression and suspected PTSD, tearing up on Tuesday as he addressed the late officer's family and describing him as a "gentle, beautiful man". "It was a privilege serving Michael," the GP said. Dr Sykes was cross-examined about his decision not to refer Constable Deutrom to a psychiatrist at the time, despite the officer disclosing he'd had some hallucinations and thoughts of suicide. The doctor told the inquest he had treated multiple officers for mental health concerns around the same time and blamed NT Police's "rotten culture" for the deaths of Constable Deutrom and other police officers who died by suicide. "I had police at that time who were being prosecuted, I had police who were prosecuting who were under an immense amount of stress." Dr Sykes later clarified that he was referring to the fatal November 2019 police shooting of Kumanjayi Walker and subsequent prosecution of then-constable Zachary Rolfe. Mr Rolfe was acquitted of criminal wrongdoing in relation to Mr Walker's death in custody. Dr Sykes told the inquest there was a culture within the police force of "feeling unsafe", and he believed Constable Deutrom "knew, whether small or non-existent … allegations against him" would leave the officer "hung out to dry". The GP referenced comments Constable Deutrom had made to his psychologist about his experience of being "extensively" cross-examined during an unrelated coronial inquest, which probed the death of a man the officer had helped arrest. "I had very junior police [officers] going to very remote, very challenging places, they were being burnt out and coming back as wrecks," he said. "This is a rotten culture within the NT police force [at the time], that sacrificed very good people." Last month, after an inquest into Mr Walker's death, NT Coroner Elisabeth Armitage found NT Police bore the "hallmarks of institutional racism". While Dr Sykes said he was seriously concerned about Constable Deutrom's health, he said did not believe the officer was at "imminent risk" of attempting to take his own life. The inquest heard the GP prescribed an SNRI anti-depressant medication and benzodiazepam to help Constable Deutrom sleep, before the officer flew to Adelaide to stay with his parents. Despite the officer disclosing thoughts of suicide on two occasions and hallucinations on one occasion, Dr Sykes did not refer him to a psychiatrist. He told the inquest he believed it would have taken Constable Deutrom six months to get an appointment, and a psychiatrist would have offered a similar treatment plan. Dr Sykes said the decision not to refer Constable Deutrom was "reasonable" at the time but said, in hindsight, he needed a psychiatrist. He told the inquest he had not been aware of a program within police's wellbeing unit which fast-tracked psychiatrist appointments. Under cross-examination Dr Sykes also admitted that an increased dosage of the SNRI medication could lead to better outcomes in people at risk of suicide. The inquest into Mr Deutrom's death continues on Wednesday, where NT Police is expected to give evidence.

21 new PFAS chemicals identified in Sydney tap water via sensitive testing methods
Australian researchers have found 21 new "forever chemicals" in Sydney's tap water, including one that's been detected in tap water globally for the first time. The researchers from the University of New South Wales sampled tap water from four catchment sites across Sydney, looking for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — a family of chemicals in firefighting foam and everyday products that remain in the environment. Alex Donald, a professor in chemistry and the lead author of the research, said they found 31 PFAS chemicals in total from sites at Ryde, Potts Hill, Prospect and North Richmond. "We knew we would find more than were known, but we actually found 21 that hadn't been reported previously in Australian drinking water," he said. Professor Donald said he wanted to "reassure" the public, however, noting the concentrations are very low. "We're talking about one drop of water in up to 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools. "So very low levels and they're within safe Australian drinking water guidelines, which regulate four distinct PFAS chemicals and their concentrations." He said the chemicals had not been identified until now, likely due to two main factors, including using more sensitive testing methods that can detect low levels of chemicals. The researchers were also looking for specific chemicals in order to detect them. Professor Donald said one of the PFAS chemicals found had not been reported previously in any drinking supply globally. "It has been picked up in various consumer products like food packaging and so somehow that must have made it into the waterway, but we don't know the origin of it," he said. Another significant finding was the first ever detection in Australian drinking water of a compound he described as a "breakdown product of firefighting foams". "And that's only been reported once previously overseas," he said. "Those two are quite rare to see in drinking water." The US Environmental Protection Agency considers there is no safe level of PFAS in drinking water, due to health risks it presents to humans, but the Australian government guidelines state there is a safe level of exposure. "Sydney's water meets current Australian standards, but when considering health benchmarks used in other countries, some samples were near or above safety limits," Professor Donald said. 'I still drink the tap water, and the experts are saying it's safe, but I think it does give you pause about just what is in there and I would like to see more research about detecting chemicals and seeing how prevalent it is." The research comes at the same time as the release of the findings of an expert advisory panel established by NSW Health. It found that based on "substantial research already undertaken, the health effects of PFAS appear to be small". The report says at present there is "no clinical benefit for an individual to have a blood rest for PFAS" and that "clinical interventions that reduce blood PFAS are of uncertain benefit and may cause harm". The expert panel was made up of speciality practitioners, including leading science and health experts in the fields of oncology, endocrinology, toxicology, cardiology, epidemiology, pathology, primary care, public health and risk communication.

Canberra Hospital sets new daily record of emergency department presentations amid surging demand
A record number of patients have visited Canberra's emergency rooms this winter, with expected wait times pushing above nine hours at Canberra Hospital just last night. The ACT Health app showed the wait time at Canberra Hospital last night at around 8pm was nine hours and 13 minutes, with 54 patients in line. Dr Shakeeb Bani-Yaseen, the clinical director of Canberra Health Services' medical division, said wait times of that length are "definitely not normal". "We haven't seen this number in a very, very long time," Dr Bani-Yaseen said. However, he said the wait time was not as straightforward as it appeared. "My understanding of those numbers is they do not reflect the wait time, they reflect the total time it takes to see a nurse, get triaged, see a doctor, have some blood tests, have the results, then get seen by the referral team," he said. "It's a treatment time as opposed to the wait time. Dr Bani-Yaseen said July 16 marked the highest number of presentations to Canberra Hospital's emergency department on record. "We saw 356 patients that day, which is a number we've not seen before," he said. "Over the last six months, we've seen the highest numbers of presentations — we're averaging at about 320 patients per day over the seven days. "The flu season has definitely played a major role in this." Flu season aside, Dr Bani-Yaseen said he'd witnessed a slow but significant increase in the number of patients relying on Canberra's public health system in the past few years. "We see just under 1,000 patients between Canberra Hospital, North Canberra Hospital and the walk-in centres every 24 hours," Dr Bani-Yaseen said. "I've been at Canberran Hospital on-and-off for the past ten years and I remember in 2018 and 2019, 250 patients per day was a busy day. "Now, we see 320 patients and we go, 'Today wasn't too bad'. "That's due to there being a lot of complex medical issues and the increased population both in Canberra and the surrounding regions." Vice president of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association Paul Haines said patients from his state were unfairly adding to the ACT public health system's burden. "The truth is because the ACT government invests more heavily in health than the NSW government, the ACT's health services are better than the NSW health services," Mr Haines, who works at Yass Hospital, said. "So, a lot of our patients actually like to go into the ACT health system because they know they're going to get a better service. "And our doctors also prefer to send our patients into the ACT health system for the very same reason." Mr Haines said that Goulburn Base Hospital redirecting patients into the ACT could also be adding to the problem. "Unfortunately, we do find that Goulburn Hospital is very, very busy and often because they have such little capacity, they do provide us with more resistance than they should do," he said. "So, Goulburn Hospital is a referral hospital for all of the smaller hospitals in the southern local health district but we're finding that because they're so busy, they often request that we refer our patients into Canberra. "And there's actually no governance to say whether that's appropriate or not, but if we can't get our doctors at Goulburn to accept our patients, we don't have a choice." Another challenge, according to Mr Haines, was returning NSW patients to their local hospital after their initial treatment in Canberra. "What this does is put more pressure on the ACT health system, which obviously impacts the patients in the ACT that require those beds and those services." In a statement, a spokesperson for NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the Southern NSW Local Health District had local arrangements in place to enable inter-hospital transfers when required with the ACT. "Transfer decisions are dependent on a number of factors, but the clinical situation and needs of the patient and their family are paramount," the spokesperson said. ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith wouldn't go as far as to say Canberra's public health system was buckling under the burden of NSW patients, which make up 25 per cent of presentations on average. She did, however, concede the price the NSW government paid per patient was insufficient. "When NSW pays us to take their patients, they're paying us at the National Efficient Price and we can't deliver services at that price," she said. "Like other small jurisdictions, we do face higher costs, where we have fixed costs that are spread across a smaller number of hospitals and patients. "So, we've been arguing in the context of the National Health Reform Agreement negotiations, that small jurisdictions should get a premium on the National Efficient Price that reflects the higher costs that they have to pay." The National Efficient Price is set annually by the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority, and is based on the average national cost of an average patient's visit to a public hospital. Minister Stephen-Smith also said it was about time the NSW government chipped-in for hospital infrastructure in the ACT. "We've delivered a new critical services building at Canberra Hospital — a $660 million project — and we're developing a more than $1 billion new Northside Hospital and NSW contributes nothing towards the capital costs of that infrastructure that serves the whole of southern NSW," she said. "So, we would like capital costs to be included somehow in the contribution NSW makes." Canberra Liberals Leader Leanne Castley said she was quite disappointed to see the recent wait time figures. "It is the middle of winter, [so] sure, we should expect a little bit of a surge," Ms Castley said. "[Canberrans] deserve so much better. They deserve nation-leading healthcare." She repeated calls for a royal commission into the ACT's public health system. "None of the internal reviews or culture surveys and tweaks here and there seem to be making any difference on the ground for local Canberrans," Ms Castley said. "And until we get in and have a look, take the lid off and have a look from the top down, I really do believe that we won't see much more change." She said the issue spoke to the ACT government's apparent lack of a long-term strategy for the public health sector. "Because of that the minister needs to have that long-term strategy in order to see Canberrans when they need to be seen."
