Meta releases AI app; Amazon won't break down tariff costs online; New Tata plant starts iPhone production
Meta releases AI app
Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta has announced its standalone AI assistant app as a rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The app will help users directly connect with their family of Llama AI models. Zuckerberg said that Meta AI already had a billion users currently and while the app at the moment is simple, using it regularly will give it more context about the users. The app also has a social media feed so others can see AI-generated posts by their peers. Users can share their prompts and AI art too. Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses users will also be able to connect the new app with the device. There's an experimental mode that enables naturalistic voice conversations. However, the feature will not be able to look through the web. Additionally, Meta AI will have access to user Instagram and Facebook accounts to know them better.
Amazon won't break down tariff costs online
Amazon has clarified that they will not be displaying the tariff costs next to their products on their website after the White House criticised reports that said that the company would do so. The e-commerce giant was considering the move internally for certain segments like their Haul service, a recently launched, low-cost storefront, and hadn't made a final decision yet. The White House responded to the speculative report calling it a 'hostile and political act' and went on to tag the company as having 'partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm.' However, U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Amazon's clarification in a positive manner saying founder Jeff Bezos was 'terrific.' The tariffs have impacted many businesses including Amazon especially rivals like Temu and Shein.
New Tata plant starts iPhone production
As Apple shifts production for their iPhones from China to India, a new Tata Electronics plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu has started production. The plant will reportedly be making older models of iPhones on one assembly line. Meanwhile, a second plant by Taiwan's Foxconn is under construction in Bengaluru, Karnataka and will be manufacturing one assembly line within the coming days. The $2.6 billion plant is also expected to create 50,000 jobs at full capacity once it is finished by December 2027. Currently, China accounts for more than 75% of global iPhone production while India makes up 18% of it. The hardware giant is moving at a faster pace to push production in India and even shipped around 600 tones of iPhones last month to beat the Trump tariffs.

Reddit sues Anthropic for using user content to train AI without consent
Social media platform Reddit has filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic, alleging that it illegally scraped user-generated content to train its chatbot, Claude. The suit was filed on Wednesday in the California Superior Court in San Francisco. Reddit claims Anthropic used automated tools to extract posts and comments from its platform despite explicit instructions not to do so. It says the content was then used to train Claude without proper user consent or licences. Ben Lee, Reddit's chief legal officer, criticised the alleged data practices, stating, 'AI companies should not be allowed to scrape information and content from people without clear limitations on how they can use that data.' He said Reddit is committed to protecting its user community, which generates one of the internet's largest bodies of discussion content. Legal partnerships cited as contrast Reddit, which went public last year, pointed to its existing licensing agreements with companies like OpenAI and Google as examples of lawful collaboration. These partnerships, the company said, include mechanisms to remove content, filter spam, and protect users. 'These partnerships allow us to enforce meaningful safeguards for our users,' said Lee, underscoring the contrast with what Reddit describes as Anthropic's unlicensed use of its data. Anthropic rejects charges, prepares defence Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees and backed by Amazon, denied the allegations. 'We disagree with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously,' the company said in a brief statement. Focus on breach of contract, not copyright While many AI-related lawsuits centre on copyright violations, Reddit's case focuses on breach of contract and unfair business practices. It argues that Anthropic violated Reddit's terms of service by accessing data without authorisation. The filing cites a 2021 research paper co-authored by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which named Reddit as a valuable training resource. Subreddits on gardening, history, and personal advice were specifically mentioned for teaching AI how humans communicate. Anthropic has previously maintained its use of public data is legal. In a 2023 letter to the US Copyright Office, the company stated that its training involves statistical analysis rather than content replication.

Non-working streetlights could hover around 50,000-60,000 in the city
Streetlight maintenance, which has been a sticking point for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for quite some time, could take longer for streamlining. The agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a public sector agency, for streetlight maintenance ended on April 30, but no new agency has been chosen yet. The GHMC's standing committee was presented with two choices—either continue with EESL or invite tenders. The committee unanimously opted for the latter. Officials informed that the process of choosing a new agency could take at least two months, during which the existing 17 vendors of the EESL will be continued. 'The tenders involve a huge expenditure, and GHMC does not have the authority to take a decision about it. We need to forward it to the government. It could take some time,' said an official. An ongoing survey to take stock of the streetlight infrastructure before issuing tenders found that around 10% of the lights are non-functional, quating to a staggering 50,000-60,000 malfunctioning streetlights. For some lights, lamps need to be replaced, while for some others, MCBs or timers are non functional. Mopping up enough number of bulbs and other spare parts in the intervening period is proving to be a difficult task. As of June 4, a total 4,63,427 street lamps have been enumerated in the city as part of the survey. The Streetlight Project with the aim of replacing all conventional lamps with LEDs began in 2018. While 98% glow rate was the condition on which payments were made to the EESL, the general glow rate had been much less than optimum. Mostly it hovered at about 70-80 per cent. The total number of LED streetlights installed in the city is 5,50,088. Officials say that several agencies, particularly the LED manufacturers are evincing interest in bidding. The conditions to be incorporated in the service level agreement are 98% or above glow rate, penalties against day glowing, non rectification beyond the agreed period, non maintenance of buffer stock, non functioning of the dash board, and non functioning of CCMS (Centralized Control Monitoring System).
