Kevin Sussman to Star in New 'Big Bang Theory' Spinoff, Reviving His Journey as Stuart

HBO Max ordered a second spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, based on the characters from the celebrated CBS series.
The streamer announced on Wednesday, July 9, that Chuck Lorre Productions will produce the forthcoming sitcom, which will follow comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) after he is 'tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon,' per the official logline.
Sussman, 54, will reprise his beloved role alongside Lauren Lapkus, who will return as Stuart's girlfriend, Denise. Additionally, former Big Bang characters geologist Bert and quantum physicist Barry Kripke will return, portrayed respectively by Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie.
Bert, Barry, Denise and Stuart will meet alternate-universe versions of characters from The Big Bang Theory, and as the title suggests, things go awry.
Audiences were first introduced to Stuart and Barry in season 2 of the original series. As the show continued, the pair became recurring characters throughout the sitcom's entire run. The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019.
However, Denise and Bert joined the series later, with Bert entering as a recurring character in Season 6. He would appear in a total of 15 episodes. Denise was added at the end of the series' run, when she first appeared in the second episode of the final season.
Producer Chuck Lorre said in a statement that he 'wanted to do something radical,' that would in turn take him out of his 'comfort zone,' and landed on a series focused on 'something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated and argued about.'
Lorre will return to the Big Bang Theory universe alongside the original series co-creator, Bill Prady. The pair will serve as executive producers with Zak Penn.
Prady shared the writing alongside Lorre and Penn 'has been damn fun.'
'I'm certain that joy will come through the screen,' he said. 'Putting characters we loved from The Big Bang Theory into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.'
'I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people,' Penn added.
'Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with The Big Bang Theory, and we can't wait to see the universe continue with this new series,' said Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD U.S. Networks chairman and CEO.

Spoiler alert: The following contains details from the Season 3 finale of "The Gilded Age." All's well that ends well for the fair residents of Manhattan's 61st Street. Well, for everyone except Bertha Russell. Carrie Coon's conniving, scheming, take-no-prisoners socialite in HBO's "The Gilded Age" (all episodes now streaming on HBO Max) got everything she ever wanted by the end of the period drama's third season − everything except the devotion of her husband, George (Morgan Spector). In the final moments of the eventful Aug. 10 finale episode, George informs Bertha that, despite her nursing him back to health after a gunshot wound and helping his business save face with an extravagant ball, he has still not forgiven her for offenses past and may not even love her anymore. What was her crime? Well, marrying their daughter off for status, but mostly for being as ruthless as he is, but doing so as a woman. For Bertha, who has just learned their daughter (Taissa Farmiga) is actually very happily married now and expecting her first child, life has never been so good and so devastating, as she watches her husband's carriage speed away from her perfectly appointed Newport, Connecticut, manor. What happened to George Russell in 'The Gilded Age' finale? George nearly lost his railroad company and fortune this season after overleveraging his businesses and being unable to make a few crucial deals. But everyone's favorite robber baron came out on top with a few new enemies, one of whom arranges for him to be shot at the end of Episode 7. George's men rushed him home to the mansion on 61st Street rather than the hospital. They're trying to keep the shooting quiet to save face, and they were very lucky Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica) happened to be across the street at the Van Rhijn house when George was bleeding out on the impeccably varnished Russell dining table. What do we know about 'The Gilded Age' Season 4? HBO recently announced "Gilded" will be back for a fourth season, and there are plenty of plot threads left tantalizingly loose after the conclusion of Season 3. Agnes' (Christine Baranski) and Ada's (Cynthia Nixon) reaction to Oscar's new bride will test how high Baranski can raise her eyebrows and turn up her nose. Former footman Jack (Ben Ahlers) has a newfound life in the wealthy class but seems terribly lonely in his fancy house. Society queen Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) has accepted her soon-to-be divorced daughter, but how much more change can the blue bloods of New York possibly stomach? There were many episodes about temperance, women's suffrage and Jim Crow laws this season on the series, all historical elements that brought great change and chaos to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The penultimate episode of the third season of The Gilded Age ended not with the clang of a champagne glass, but with a bang (quite literally) when the Russell family patriarch found himself on the receiving end of a gun moments before the credits rolled. It was a shocking moment, particularly given the relatively poised and civil nature of the series — though, given poor John Adams's equally shocking death in the previous episode, it's becoming a bit of a pattern these days. So will George Russell manage to survive his injuries? The trailer for the season finale makes it seem like his fate could go either way. But what about the fate of The Gilded Age itself? With the show's third season coming to a close, many fans will undoubtedly be curious about when — or even if — the HBO Max hit series will return for a fourth go-round. And since it would be downright rude not to oblige, here's everything you need to know about The Gilded Age season 4: Unlike the fate of George Russell, the future of The Gilded Age is already known. HBO officially renewed the series for a fourth season back in July, which means more drama and societal hijinks is on the horizon. 'We couldn't be prouder of the undeniable viewership heights The Gilded Age has achieved this season,' HBO's Francesca Orsi said in a statement, as per Deadline. 'Transporting us to 1880s New York City, Julian Fellowes and the enormously talented cast and crew have created a 'cant-miss it' entertainment experience from week to week, and we're delighted to continue exploring these characters' grand ambitions for what we promise will be a thrilling fourth season.' Considering that we don't know how the season will end, it's impossible to say for sure what sort of content season 4 will cover. But odds are that a lot of these storylines from season 3 will be wrapping up to make way for new adventures and problems, in equal measure. Most likely, season 4 should reveal where Marion and Larry stand in regards to their romantic relationship, once and for all, now that the whole truth is out in the open. And, of course, depending upon when or if George Russell is able to recover from his injuries, there are bound to be lasting ripple effects from the shooting for the entire Russell family, both physically and emotionally. This show has been fairly regular with churning out seasons as opposed to keeping fans waiting for years on end, though their release schedule has been a little sporadic. Season 1 premiered in January 2022, followed by season 2 debuting in October 2023. Meanwhile, season 3 kicked off in June 2025. That makes predicting the season 4 premiere a little tricky — at least when it comes to guessing the month — but it seems fairly plausible that the series will return sometime in 2026, barring any scheduling conflicts with the cast, which isn't too far away. Normally, I would say that this show doesn't have a history of killing off central characters a la Game of Thrones-style, which would make every character's return very likely. However, that sentiment doesn't really seem to track these days. Morgan Spector recently told Variety that viewers should be 'very worried' in regards to George Russell's fate on the show, even going so far as to admit that 'I don't have a contract for next season yet, so who knows?' But while poor George's head may be on the chopping block, you would think many of the other key players will be coming back, including Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Denée Benton, Louisa Jacobson, Harry Richardson, and Blake Ritson, among many others. Though, this season has been particularly fraught with peril, so with the finale still looming on the horizon, who knows what could happen.
