Selangor's Fortes hopes to fly high for Cape Verde in friendly
PETALING JAYA: Alvin Fortes has returned to the international football fold after seven years. And it is the perfect birthday gift for him.
The Selangor winger will turn 31 on Sunday and will be expected to feature for his nation Cape Verde in their upcoming three friendlies, which include two games against Harimau Malaya.
Cape Verde will play Malaysia at the Cheras Football Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on May 29, and then a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 3.
They will then travel to Kutaisi, Georgia, to face the national team at the Ramaz Shengelia Stadium on June 8.
Fortes, who impressed for Selangor last season on the domestic and international stage, is known for his wondrous left foot and amazing dribbling ability.
For the Red Giants in all competitions, Fortes played 35 matches, scoring 17 goals.
So it wasn't a surprise to see him return to international duty and he intends to make an impression for the world No. 75 side.
'It is great to be back after a long time. It feels long but it feels good to be back after making my debut in 2018,' said Fortes, who played for 13 clubs including Selangor throughout his professional career.
'It is always a dream to fight for my nation Cape Verde. I will give all my power and soul to put my country's flag high.
'And yes, it would be nice to take on the nation where I am currently plying my trade.
'There would be an element of familiarity but I know I have to do my best because they will put up a good performance.
'Also, it would be nice to take on some of my friends, especially the boys from Selangor.
'We will produce an amazing game and make the fans happy.'
Cape Verde is not only blessed with the talents of Fortes, but they also have several top-quality individuals playing in Europe.
In defence, the star of the team would be centreback Logan Costa, who recently helped Villarreal qualify for the Champions League.
The Yellow Submarines are currently fifth in the league with one game left and Costa, 24, has been ever-present for them throughout the season.
Then in midfield, Yannick Semedo, 29, from Portuguese club Vizela, Elson Mendes, 19, from French club Sochaux and Laros Duarte, 28, from Hungarian side Puskas Akademia will be tasked to orchestrate the team's movement with their passes and tempo.
Up front, veterans Ryan Mendes, 35, and Garry Rodrigues, 34, both plying their trade in Turkey, will be tasked to look for goals.

Tennis-Laser-focused Gauff ends Boisson's dream run to reach French Open final
Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 5, 2025 Coco Gauff of the U.S. celebrates winning her semi final match against France's Lois Boisson REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes PARIS (Reuters) -Coco Gauff ended local heroine Lois Boisson's dream run at the French Open with a ruthless 6-1 6-2 victory on Thursday to set up a final clash with top seed Aryna Sabalenka. Laser-focused, the world number two from the U.S. subdued the French wild card and the home crowd to speed through the contest on Court Philippe Chatrier and reach the Roland Garros final for the second time after she lost to Iga Swiatek in 2022. Ranked 361st in the world, Boisson had downed world number three Jessica Pegula and Russia's Mirra Andreeva in the previous rounds, but she looked deflated against Gauff. The 22-year-old will, however, pocket a career-changing 690,000 euros ($789,567) in prize money, while Gauff will have the chance to secure her second Grand Slam title after winning the 2023 U.S. Open. Kean to miss Italy qualifers against Norway, Moldova
ITALY will be without Fiorentina striker Moise Kean for their two opening World Cup qualifying matches, away against Norway on Friday and at home against Moldova on Monday, the Italian football federation said. Kean sustained a muscle strain in his right thigh during training on Wednesday, the federation said, adding that he had returned to his club for recovery. The 25-year-old enjoyed the best season of his career in 2024-25 with Fiorentina, a club he joined last summer from Juventus, scoring 19 goals to finish second in the Serie A goal scorers' standings. Italy coach Luciano Spalletti will also be without a pair of defenders, Alessandro Buongiorno missing the Norway match through injury while Francesco Acerbi, who was in the Inter Milan side that lost the Champions League final, declined a call-up. Italy, who failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, face a tricky start against Erling Haaland's Norway on Friday before hosting Moldova three days later in Reggio Emilia. Norway lead Group I after winning their two opening matches against Israel and Moldova in March.

Tennis-Boisson goes from crowdfunding to bumper pay day in Paris
FILE PHOTO: Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 2, 2025 France's Lois Boisson in action during her fourth round match against Jessica Pegula of the U.S. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo PARIS (Reuters) -French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson will earn at least 690,000 euros ($789,636.00) from her fairytale run at Roland Garros which means the local favourite will no longer have to rely on crowdfunding in a bid to boost her finances. The French wild card came into the tournament having earned about 20,000 euros this year but even if she loses to American Coco Gauff in the semi-finals on Thursday, the world number 361 can expect endorsements and sponsorships to come flooding in. If Boisson beats the second-seeded American and reaches the final she will receive a cheque for 1,275,000 euros, while if the 22-year-old wins the title she will pocket 2,550,000 euros. Boisson started a crowdfunding campaign a year ago, asking for help to "get back to the highest level and make it to the four Grand Slams this year" after suffering a serious knee injury just before Roland Garros, where she got a wild card. Boisson received another invitation from the French tennis federation to play at the tournament again this year and has not disappointed, beating world number three Jessica Pegula and Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva in the two previous rounds. Boisson only got 100 euros in crowdfunding in a year before that jumped above 1,000 just before the semi-finals but the talented youngster won't need to seek donations now.
