Smeg New World giveaway smart move, says marketing expert

Being part of New World's latest promo is unlikely to hurt Smeg's higher-end image, even if people are picking up its products for nothing, marketing experts say.
The supermarket is offering baking dishes and utensil organisers in return for stickers collected at a rate of one per $20. Some items, such as the cast iron braiser, require cash on top of stickers.
Kitchen Things is selling Smeg casserole dishes for more than $450 and a set of three containers for $439.
Sarah Dodds, a senior marketing lecturer at Massey University, said it was a smart move for Smeg to be involved in the New World giveaway.
"It gives them exposure to a broader target market, a sensible growth strategy in today's market to increase market share.
"Although Smeg is typically positioned as a premium, designer appliance brand, partnering with a major supermarket like New World offers widespread visibility across New Zealand, creating brand awareness and interest from aspirational consumers who may not have previously considered high-end appliances."
She said giveaways could often generate excitement and goodwill.
"Associating the brand with a Kiwi supermarket can personalise the brand and increase its relatability.
"The key will be to preserve the brand's premium appeal while benefiting from New World's broad reach to grow the brand in New Zealand. Having said that, New World is positioned as a supermarket that offers quality product and a full-service, premium shopping environment, so in that sense, Smeg fits reasonably well with New World."
University of Auckland marketing professor Michael Lee said, if it was a new type of promotion, it could be detrimental to the Smeg brand, but the model was well known.
"New World has done enough of these now, all with high-end brands, that they have sort of become pseudo status promoters of the brands involved."
Foodstuffs said the promotion was a successful one, with 92 percent awareness among New World shoppers.

A crucial study into how freight is moved around the country has now been given the green light, despite the Ministry of Transport earlier this month saying it would not be going ahead. The National Freight Demand Study was last undertaken in 2018 , and 2014 and 2008 before that, and captures total freight volume and movements across the country, including which goods are moved, and how. It uses publicly available data, as well as industry-provided data such as EROAD GPS in heavy vehicles. There had been indications the study would go ahead - with the Ministry recently spending $164,000 to get advice on what the new iteration of the study would involve , including making greater use of telemetry and GPS data. In an article from BusinessDesk on July 7 however confirmed the study had been dropped due to "operating in a constrained fiscal environment". Nine to Noon sought to clarify the status of the study - and received a surprise response from the Transport Minister Chris Bishop that he was "actively exploring options to commission an update to the Freight Demand Study". Paul Manning and Thomas Rodewald of BDO NZ were appointed as liquidators before vacating the position, later to be filled by Steven Khov and Kieran Jones. The business had two shareholders, Zacura Holdings, which held 75% of the business and is owned by Glen Curd, and Lucy Green, who held the remaining 25%. According to Khov and Jones' first report, New York Bagels experienced a downturn in revenue, impacting cashflow, and was forced into defaulting on liabilities as they fell due. Before they vacated their role as liquidators, Manning and Rodewald froze the company's bank account and contacted secured creditors asking for details of their debt and securities.

Job advertisements fall for a second month

Photo: 123RF The mid-year economic slowdown appears to be weighing on the job market with job advertisements falling for a second month. Data from employment website Seek NZ showed job ads fell 3 percent in June from a month earlier , and 3 percent lower than a year ago. Applications per job ad - recorded with a one-month lag - were down 2 percent monthly. It comes as various economic datasets point to the country's economic recovery stalling in the middle of the year. Seek country manager Rob Clark said job ad levels remained broadly flat for the past year. "While the volume remains below pre-Covid levels, there are pockets of growth, which should be cause for some optimism," he said. Job ad volumes were mixed across the regions, with Gisborne, Marlborough and Southland the only region to see month-on-month growth in June. In Auckland and Canterbury, volumes fell 2 percent in June, while Wellington fell 4 percent. Otago was flat, while Waikato fell 4 percent. The only industry to see an increase in volumes was Information & Communication Technology, with more demand for ICT managers and networks & systems administrators. "Despite a monthly dip in June, demand within government and defence has jumped 51 percent year-on-year, and we're seeing a growing number of industries return to annual growth within the professional and consumer services sectors," Clark said.
