Aguia hits paydirt with first hole at Colombian gold project
Aguia Resources has fired the starting gun on what could be a game-changing drilling campaign at its Santa Barbara gold project in Colombia, after early-stage results hinted at the discovery of a high-grade gold system lurking 40 metres beneath the existing mine.
The ASX-listed explorer has sunk the first two holes of a 25-hole campaign and has already struck mineralised quartz veins and key fault structures. Importantly, the hits appear to confirm its geological model and tease at the potential of a much bigger gold system.
The company's first drill hole intersected a 4-metre mica zone at surface, containing small quartz veining. The veining was followed by a separate 10-centimetre quartz vein at 6m depth.
Further down the hole, the drill bit struck a 0.7m thick quartz vein at a depth of 107.4m, which lit up with visual sulphide mineralisation, including pyrite, sphalerite and galena. These sulphides are often linked to gold.
Aguia says the deeper intersection appears to be an extension of vein 1, which has already been partially mined in a trial operation that processed 500 tonnes at an average of 20 grams per tonne (g/t) gold.
The hole also cut through a key fault zone at 52m, confirming the structural complexity previously predicted by the company's geologists.
The second hole, still being drilled to reach 138.6m depth, has struck the same near-surface veining and is showing a similar mineralised system beyond the fault. Together, the two drill holes have covered nearly 300m of drilling so far.
The current drilling program is designed to target vein systems within a 7km-long mineralised corridor. Except for the first few holes, the drilling is planned to test near-surface mineralisation in holes that are shorter than 100m.
Assays are pending. When the results are in, Aguia plans to map out the dip, strike and offset of the known gold-bearing veins for future mine planning and resource modelling.
The gold at Santa Barbara seems to come from a mix of mesothermal and epithermal rocks, with signs of repeated mineral activity. The veins are found in pinkish rock, called San Lucas gneiss, which contain broken rock textures with coarse galena and yellow sphalerite - both are signs of a strong gold system.
The project's vein system appears to be showing striking similarities to two of Colombia's biggest gold hitters, the Segovia and Buriticá mines.
When Canadian outfit Continental Gold unveiled its maiden resource at Buriticá in 2011, it stunned the market with 3.1 million ounces of gold and 11 million ounces of silver - all pulled from just 14 veins in the Yaraguá zone.
Some of those veins were razor-thin at just 3cm wide and were often tightly packed within 50m of each other, much like Santa Barbara's mineralisation.
It was no surprise when the company revealed an internal study in April estimating a jaw-dropping exploration target of two to four million tonnes of material grading up to 30g/t.
To keep the momentum going and subject to success, Aguia is planning to bring a second drill rig in on the action to expand the program and target deeper extensions of the mineralised zones.
Meanwhile, the past few months have been a hive of activity on site as Aguia busied itself with the restart of gold production.
Underground, the old workings have been fully rehabbed with a fresh ventilation system, upgraded electricals and a slick new electric locomotive now running through the tunnels.
Up top, the processing plant has had a facelift. It's now turning over 30 tonnes per day of ore, with a bump to 50tpd expected by July when a new primary crusher comes online.
Perhaps the biggest win came six weeks ago, when Aguia cleared a key regulatory hurdle, locking in full government approval to sell its gold locally and internationally. With the green light in hand, the company has wasted no time cashing in - just as gold prices flirt with record highs of more than $5000 an ounce.
With assays pending and the drills turning, Aguia is positioning itself for what could be a major gold discovery in the making. If grades come back as hoped, Santa Barbara might just turn from a speculative play into Colombia's newest underground gold story.

Greatland Gold guns for $4.4 billion ASX arrival next week
Australia's next big gold debutant will make a $4.4 billion splash when it arrives on the ASX this month, surpassing many of its WA mid-tier peers all uplifted by the yellow metal's thunderous run. Greatland Gold has locked in commitments to raise $50 million with Australian investors after landing on an offer price of $6.60 a share — a 19.5 per cent premium on the company's share price the day before its prospectus was lodged. The agreed rate for a slice of the Pilbara gold miner had been at the top end of the range Greatland had been shooting for, the company told the London Stock Exchange on Monday. 'The exceptional demand received for the Australian offering is testament to the quality and opportunity of Greatland's Telfer mine and world-class Havieron brownfield development project,' chief executive Shaun Day said. 'The ASX is a natural listing venue for Greatland.' The London-listed company took control of the famed Telfer gold mine in the Pilbara from behemoth Newmont in December last year, and has since churned out more than 90,000 ounces of gold. Still retaining its spot as the company's biggest backer, Newmont will offload $440m worth of Greatland shares — or about half its stake — as part of aJU secondary offer tied in with the listing deal. It was not disclosed who would take on the new shares. With a $4.4 billion market capitalisation, Greatland will sit among the top end of WA's mid-tier gold set when it begins trading on the ASX on June 24. The miner will be level pegging with Capricorn Resources, and ahead of the likes of Regis Resources, Ramelius Resources and Westgold Resources. As well as gold production, Greatland is also eyeing copper output from the undeveloped Havieron deposit it discovered in WA's Paterson region. Greatland also has a farm-in and joint venture arrangement with Rio Tinto's exploration subsidiary for 1500sqkm of ground south of the two projects. Gold's bull run has been spurred by fresh conflict in the Middle East, taking an ounce of the precious metal to $US3415.46 ($5244.95) at 5pm local time on Monday, closing in on touching an all-time high of $US3500 achieved in April. Brokers Barrenjoey, Canaccord Genuity and Bank of America are acting as joint lead managers. on the listing and raising.

Perth uranium stocks rocket after Sprott raises money for future buying spree of the nuclear fuel
The likes of Paladin Energy, Boss Energy and Deep Yellow all gained at least 15 per cent on Monday following a deal that is set to lift uranium prices. Sprott announced it sold US$100 million ($154m) worth of units in its physical uranium trust to Canaccord Genuity. The global asset manager successfully hawked the units at US$17.25 each, which is $US0.27 above the current unit price. Canada's Sprott is intending to use the money received to buy uranium after the transaction settles on June 20. 'If the entirety of this raise will go towards purchasing uranium, we estimate the demand from this raise at Friday's spot price of approximately US$70 (per pound) equates to approximately 1.43 million pounds (of uranium oxide),' Citi analyst Paul McTaggart said. 'Total utility demand is more than 180 million pounds of (uranium oxide) per year but most of this is done through term contracts — hence we believe this amount could potentially move spot prices, given it is a very thinly traded market.' Deep Yellow led the winners with a 21.2 per cent rise, Boss jumped 17.7 per cent, Paladin was up 15.6 per cent, Bannerman Energy gained 14.3 per cent and Lotus Resources leapt 12.9 per cent. Boss and Paladin are the two most shorted stocks on the ASX.

Closing Bell: ASX stays the course to finish flat as uranium stocks take flight
Energy sector powers higher again, up more than 5pc ASX uranium stocks surge ASX All Ords Gold index falls almost 5pc While global markets fell on Friday, the ASX has resisted economic riptides, staying afloat to finish up just 1 point or 0.01% in today's trade. The vast majority of that buoyancy came from the energy sector, which added 5% after surging 6% on Friday last week. Santos (ASX:STO) was a big part of that momentum, gaining 10% on a $30b takeover offer from Abu Dhabi's state-owned energy group ADNOC. The South Australian minister for energy and mining Tom Koutsantonis has already signalled that the State will be looking closely at the proposal, and in particular at its implications for employment and Santos' operations in the local area. There was also movement in the ASX All Tech index, up 0.84%, but the All Ords Gold sub-index pulled in the other direction, dragging more than 5%. ASX uranium stocks take flight It's not just oil and gas stocks pushing the ASX energy sector higher today. Uranium miners are also flying, netting double-digit gains as sentiment around uranium mining and nuclear energy turns bullish. The Iran-Israel conflict is also playing a part – Israel has pointedly targeted Iran's uranium enrichment facilities, destroying a uranium conversion facility at Isfahan. While Iran wasn't exporting any uranium to the global market, it was producing about 3000 kilogram of enriched uranium per year, demand that will now need to be met by other sources. Sprott analysts say the long-term outlook for uranium is strong, citing its constrained supply and inelastic demand levels. 'China shows no signs of slowing its buildout of new reactors,' Sprott analyst Jacob White wrote in the most recent Sprott Uranium Report. 'In the US, the Trump administration has reaffirmed its support for nuclear energy as a strategic priority. 'Large technology companies, such as Amazon, Google, and Meta, have joined the chorus, backing the expansion of tripling nuclear power by 2050 to meet growing baseload power needs. 'In a world of rising risk and correlation, uranium remains resilient, uncorrelated and increasingly essential.' Deep Yellow (ASX:DYL) has added 20% today, Boss Energy (ASX:BOE) 17%, Paladin (ASX:PDN) 15%, Bannerman (ASX:BMN) 14% and Lotus Resources (ASX:LOT) just under 13%.
