How to make midlife feet look good in sandals
A thoroughly good pedicure underpins my entire summer beauty regime. By good I mean one whereby my feet and toenails glisten like perspex. After all, it's the extremities (skin, feet, hair, nails) that give the most bang for your buck. Get these glowing and you can skip all else and remain impeccably groomed. Which brings me to my first point: before you even conceive of the colour, heels and cuticles must be tended to with assassin-like attention.
I call on Milly Mason, a nail artist who specialises in prestige pedicures (including Lily Allen's who incidentally has a 4.9 out of five star-rating on WikiFeet). Interestingly, Mason doesn't recommend removing hard heel skin with any sort of implement (it grows back quicker and thicker) but to nurture feet daily with a foot mask that includes Urea, a byproduct of protein known for its intense hydration. At high percentages (over 10 per cent) Urea acts as a keratolytic, helping to exfoliate the top layer of skin without need for mechanical tools. I've been singing the praises of Eucerin's Urea Repair Intensive Moisturising Lotion for years – it deals with rough patches (elbows, knees, heels) like nothing else I've tried.

For feet specifically however, Mason suggests something altogether more powerful: the 40 per cent Urea Chapped Skin Cream from German nail brand LCN, which sorted the cracks running up the backs of my heels within a week.
At night I've been doubling up with their Chapped Skin Balm to seal it all in, though I'll hazard a guess that Vaseline is as proficient at preventing moisture from escaping should you not have the latter.
Mason took a gentle electric buffing tool to my heels (Bare Feet by Margaret Dabbs does a good one) and rough outer toe skin before applying the cream, but a rudimentary foot file is all you need at home to keep hard skin from building into a monstrous layer. Mason says to stay clear of blades and rasps which are precarious at best. When it comes to toe length, she assures me that short is best. If you can feel your toenails pressing up against the front of your shoes then you could be causing long-term damage to the nail bed. As for soaking the feet, this should be done last, after filing, shaping and polishing, as painting onto damp toenails can result in a fungal or bacterial infection.
If you're doing your own pedicure – which, provided you have the right tools, is tremendously satisfying – then file toenails with an emery board, says Mason. Disposable ones are generally recommended though it's only really relevant if you're sharing nail files. Before polishing, push back cuticle skin with a cuticle softener and cuticle pusher, then lightly even the surface of the nail bed with a nail buffer (it has a much finer grit than a traditional file). You want as smooth a surface as possible for the polish to look its best – and for it to last.

Toeanails are generally a zone to experiment with one of the trendier shades (spearmint green and neons are doing the rounds this summer), though if you generally err on the side of restraint as I do, then Precious by The Gelbottle, is a mature ballerina pink worth a look. Alternatively, Mason suggests black. 'It looks crisp and fresh on toenails so long as it has a glossy finish,' she claims. I was unsure at first. Too gothic, too cool. But in reality there's nothing more classic. Even in summer. Just don't forget to drench the toes in cuticle oil and apply foot lotion.

Yikes, the sights you see in the foot region when the weather's hot. Can I just say – hello, has everyone folk forgotten about the joys of a good old fashioned nail brush? People spend a small fortune on nail art, but when it comes to £4 for a wooden (rather than plastic) nail brush...
Feet have become a passion I never thought I'd have – possibly because mine keep reminding me they deserve my full attention. Hard skin, corns, a shortened metatarsal that means my feet pronate, a bunion on my left foot (I had the right one removed which was one of the best things I ever did) I've seen and got them all.
That's why these days, I see a podiatrist every few months. I'm about to get orthotics fitted. While they won't alter the alignment of my feet long term, I'm assured they'll help them rest in the correct position while I'm wearing them, so shoes don't rub and callouses and hard skin form less quickly. Using Margaret Dabbs' excellent foot file several times a week and a really good foot cream daily keeps things under control between visits. (Kure Bazaar's is pricy but lasts ages).
Orthotics aren't cheap either but sometimes you can get them on private insurance. Either way they have to be worth it. Foot health is vital to overall health and wellbeing. There's a section of rigorous foot exercises on the Pilatesology app which help strengthen feet and lift arches. Pilatesology is a paid-for app that, despite being a Pilates disciple for 30 years, I've only recently discovered. It has a huge library of classes for all levels, from mat to machines. It's brilliant. If that all sounds a bit much, rolling a simple spiky ball or foot roller under your arches can feel amazingly good.
Meanwhile, I'm wearing my sheepskin-lined Fitflops (good in hot wear, no rubbing) from last year that look and feel like a bed. Surprisingly, I've had a lot of compliments on them and my feet have never been happier. Birkenstock do something similar.
They're not the most elegant footwear, but a good manicure makes a world of difference. Like Annabel, I love natural, buffed, clean looking toenails, but my sensible, low-glam footwear tipped me over into a glossy orange red pedi the other day, and I must say, it's very cheering.
I don't bother with gel on my toes – too much of a faff getting it removed. The exception is if I'm going on holiday and planning on scrambling over rocks, an admittedly niche activity which chips varnish in a nano second.
A few drops of cuticle/almond oil whenever you remember, keeps things looking glossy and healthy.

A woman who left behind her London life to become a farmer in Brazil has admitted the move was 'one of the biggest struggles' of her life. Angel Bulut, 25, originally from Northwich, Cheshire, never expected a luxurious lifestyle in Brazil, but was shocked by the standard of living when she arrived in the South American country nearly three years ago. The 'blonde city girl' moved from Bracknell, London, with her Brazilian partner in October 2022 after saying she had grown 'tired' of her restaurant manager job. Well acquainted with the costly living standard in London, Angel was gobsmacked to discover just how expensive things also were on the other side of the world, and has since had to rely on her savings to make ends meet. Angel left behind her £2,300 a month wage to work full-time as a milk farmer in Parana, and now survives on BRL 6,500 before costs (around £887) per month with her partner. Now, she and her partner spend a fortune on 'everything', from food, to bills and clothes, with little leftover for luxuries. Initially apprehensive about her new life, Angel even considered returning home to the UK after just six months, but changed her mind when she began 'falling in love with things after the anger left'. She grew to appreciate the space she had - a two-and-a-half-acre farm compared to a one-bed apartment in London - and fell in love with the weather and 'not having a boss'. Angel said: 'My first year here was one of the biggest struggles of my life. I struggled with everything. 'I didn't speak any Portuguese. I was just this blonde UK city girl that came into the farm - It's not been an easy process. 'We're living a life but without the pleasures of living in the UK. I'm accustomed to having less now. 'I'm falling in love with things after the anger left. We have so much space. I have the sun, I have my animals that have all the space they want, and I don't have a boss. 'You suffer - you don't have the things you want and then just look around and see all the things you do have'. The 25-year-old moved abroad after meeting and falling in love with her Brazilian partner in Northwich. They went on to move to the two-and-a-half-acre farm in Parana, looking after 30 cows and raising pigs, fish and chickens for their own consumption. 'We're primarily a milk farm,' she explained. 'We wake up the milk cows, cook for them. Well acquainted with the costly living standard in London, Angel was gobsmacked to discover just how expensive things also were on the other side of the world, and has since had to rely on her savings to make ends meet 'The girls we bred are finally giving birth, so this is kind of the beginning of the story of, 'Is this going to work?' I was working harder than I every expected to,' she said. Transitioning to life in Brazil means Angel spends BRL 1,500 per month on food (around £200), using savings to buy luxuries. 'We don't pay for water as we have a waterfall on the farm. Electricity is up to BRL 600 per month in summer and up to BRL 300 in the winter. 'We have an outdoor kitchen which we use everyday and use just fire to power it, and that brings the bills down. 'In the UK I'd make £2,300 a month after tax, and after costs I'd be left with £700. 'Here, considering what we earn on the farm, 50 per cent goes to the supplement of the cows. 'It can be up to BRL 10,000 per month and after costs we are left with up to BRL 4,000 per month across the year. And after that, there are the vet bills too. 'My partner built the house before coming here, the price of building a house plus the price of the land where I live is around BRL 366,000 which is around £50,000. 'Another thing is how dangerous it is,' she said, adding, 'How I loved to go on walks by myself as a woman at night in the UK. 'Here, I kid you not, I cannot leave the house alone without the protection of my dog. You can't be out at night time'. As a former gym lover, Angel has also found it difficult to adjust to her local gym being over an hours walk away, and with no car, she struggles to get there. 'I never come across someone like myself, everyone is so indulged in the cowboy culture. 'Like literal cowboy boots, when you see a Western movie it's like that. It's a huge clash of culture. 'Every state is different. It's either a cowgirl or literally a model. Brazilian women really look after themselves'. Despite adjusting to the new ways of life, Angel is now learning Portuguese and loves looking after the animals on her farm. 'My health is good because I'm not cold, I'm getting my vitamin D. In my opinion private healthcare is cheaper here. 'The people here are friendlier, compared to the Brazilian culture England is a very cold, cruel culture. 'In terms of moving back to the UK never say never but I was unhappy in the UK, I never enjoyed it. 'In terms of leaving Brazil and living in Brazil, I hated it for so many reasons, but now I love it. If I can find a way to have the quality of life I'm looking for, I'd stay'.

The unassuming townhouse, nestled in the picturesque city of Jaca, in the Pyrenees, is a far cry from the extensive property portfolio she now enjoys alongside fiance Cristiano Ronaldo. The 31-year-old's engagement to the Portuguese football icon, 40, was revealed in an Instagram post this week, in which she flashed her gigantic £4million engagement ring. The 35-carat diamond is worth more than 10 times her childhood home, estimated to be worth around €300,000 today. It is just one of countless luxuries she enjoys documenting on her Instagram page, where she shares pictures with her 69 million followers of herself strolling around Dubai while clutching a Birkin handbag, flying on private jets and relaxing in jacuzzis on yachts with Ronaldo. But beneath the surface of her rags-to-riches story are uncomfortable truths that she has kept out of the limelight including details of her father being jailed in Spain over a plot to import £100,000 worth of cocaine. There have also been claims from her family that she has forgotten some of them - and some anger back home in Jaca over how she has portrayed her hometown. For this reason, there was mixed reaction over her engagement announcement in the town this week. 'I'm happy for them, she was a charming little girl,' local waitress Ramona Manzanera, 50, said this week. 'I knew her family, but I have not seen her mother for many years. They used to own a burger restaurant in Jaca's bar district, but it closed down after a year or so, and Georgina worked at a bar around the corner.' Ramona said some locals dislike Georgina and criticise her, which she puts down to jealousy. She added: 'I have nothing bad to say about her, this is a small city where everyone knows everyone, but there are lots of people with negative opinions because they are jealous that she got out and is successful and rich.' 'He seemed a typical macho guy who would go to a bar and get in a fight,' he said, 'but he wasn't feared and didn't seem dangerous in person.' Gorjon, who worked as a football coach for the local Jacetona club, served 10 years in a Spanish jail for two drug trafficking offences. These included masterminding a failed attempt to smuggle more than £100,000 of cocaine from Spain to France the day before Georgina's fifth birthday. Georgina's half sister Patricia claimed that she once saw their father carrying a gun at home while preparing drug parcels. It's just one of several pieces missing from the carefully-crafted story of Georgina's rise to stardom, which is documented in her Netflix 'reality' TV series 'I Am Georgina', which first began streaming in January 2022. A friend of Georgina's father has gone on record as saying Jorge met his future wife at the secluded nightspot he used to own on the outskirts of Jaca where she is said to have earned a living working as a hostess. She is thought to live in a small village in Girona near Spain's border with France where locals described her in January 2022 as a 'dyed-blonde' in her 60s who had recently supervised renovation work at a rundown bungalow. Georgina was initially thought to have purchased the property as a new home for her mother before it was put up for sale. The model and influencer has thanked her mum publicly. She once described Ana Maria and her big sister as 'a little family of three' who are 'unconditional and inseparable', despite her apparent determination to protect her mum from public scrutiny. Georgina's extended family, including her maternal uncle Jesus Hernandez and her step-sister Patricia Hernandez, have filled in some of the holes they accuse her of airbrushing out of her life. Patricia, who has claimed Ana Maria put her in a boarding school after her own mother died when she was 11, because she 'couldn't look after her', went on national Spanish TV after the January 2022 premiere of the first series of 'I Am Georgina' to claim Georgina had erased her from her life. Patricia also recalled seeing their dad carrying a pistol as he prepared parcels containing drugs at home, which she said he tried to make out were food parcels for the poor. Georgina's maternal grandmother Juana Escarabajal was 80 when she died in November 2019, after spending the last years of her life in a tiny prefab in Lorca near Murcia. Juana perished in a devastating 2011 earthquake there which killed nine people. She previously spoke of her anguish at never meeting Georgina's eldest daughter Alana Martina with Cristiano. She once admitted in an emotional interview: 'I only saw my granddaughter in a photo when she was very small that Georgina sent.' Georgina's uncle Jesus Hernandez once complained: 'I think she may feel ashamed of us and considers she's better than us because we don't enjoy the sort of life she does or live with her luxury. 'I've never asked Georgina for anything, even though I know who she's with. She has only ever rung me once or twice since I found out she was dating Cristiano Ronaldo.' In a TV interview ahead of her Netflix show, Jesus said Georgina's dad asked him to provide for the family after he was jailed for drug trafficking. 'I did everything,' he said. 'Georgina was living with me from the age of 15 until the day they sent her father back to Argentina. 'Noone in the family told us Jorge had died or what his final resting place was.' Jesus' partner Lidia added: 'Georgina stopped calling Jesus and her grandmother the day she gave birth to her daughter. In November 2019 it was incorrectly reported they had tied the knot in Marrakech in Morocco fuelled the speculation about their relationship status. Georgina has stood by him despite cheating allegations and outrageous claims Ronaldo was gay compounded by the nightmare of a high-profile US rape court case in which Ronaldo described 2018 as 'possibly the worst year of my life.' Portuguese model Natacha Sofia Freitas Rodrigues claimed he cheated on Georgina in March 2017 with her - months after he met Georgina. Natcha said she received messages from Ronaldo saying: 'I love your bum, I want to see it in the flesh' before he handed her a baseball cap as a parting gift after their tryst at his Lisbon apartment. She later said: 'I can sympathise with Georgina and what she might have gone through. I'm sure she believes Cristiano cheated on her with me and I think she's worked out how to forgive him.' Georgina also stood by her man when Kathryn Mayorga attemptted to reopen her rape case against him in 2018. She claimed he forced her to have sex in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009. He insisted it was consensual and paid her a £275,000 financial settlement. Police never bought charges against him and US courts rejected her later bids to claim millions more from him. Georgina has claimed it was 'love at first sight' when Cristiano walked into her shop in June 2016. As she confirmed she had agreed to be the football star's wife on Monday, she gushed: 'Yes, I do. In this life and in all my lives.' But it was the ring on her finger, compared by some critics to a boulder because of its size, that got as much attention as the couple's long-awaited Instagram announcement.
