Trainer Matt Smith already eyeing The Everest for star sprinter Headwall as he prepares for The Quokka

Trainer Matt Smith is adamant Headwall deserves a crack at this year's $20m The Everest as his star sprinter prepares to chase a win in Australia's second richest slot race at Ascot this Saturday.
Headwall can complete his meteoric rise up the Australian sprint ranks with victory in Perth's richest race, the $5m The Quokka (1200m).
Despite not winning, the son of Dream Ahead has still been a revelation this campaign with a string of excellent performances at Group 1 level.
Smith's emerging talent followed up a first-up fourth in the Oakleigh Plate by finishing runner-up in the Newmarket Handicap and a fast-finishing third in the TJ Smith Stakes.
'He has gone to another level this preparation,' Smith said.
'You never know if horses are going to take that next step but he has.
'He has got the turn of foot to win a Group 1 and is clearly tracking in that direction based on his three runs this preparation.
'They've been outstanding so I am just delighted. He wouldn't have done this before because he wouldn't relax but now he is starting to relax in his runs and gives himself every chance to win one of these races.'
Briasa is brilliant in the G1 T J Smith Stakes! He makes it 7 wins from just 9 starts as he races away for @HawkesRacing and @G1TySchil! ðŸ'¨ @aus_turf_club | @WorldPool pic.twitter.com/ee1N0fCLm4

Headwall ($6) is one of three NSW raiders in Perth for the Quokka with two-time winner Overpass ($2 favourite) and country weapon Front Page ($9) also lining up.
Both Overpass and Front Page have drawn double-digit gates while Headwall jumps from barrier eight with Zac Lloyd aboard.

'The draw is fine for us, we can't be unhappy with the draw,' Smith said.
'The horse seems to be happy, I can't fault him really.
'He has been here a little over a week now but he settled in fine and seems fine.
'He has had a few runs so we just need to tick him over and keep him happy.'
Smith said Headwall will go for a break straight after his trip to Perth to prepare for a spring assault he hopes will end up in The Everest.
'We will go through those Everest lead-up races,' Smith said.
'You can line all the form up now since we've had the three big sprints and you can see they are four or five of them within a length of each other.
'I think he well and truly deserves a crack at The Everest.'
Only one horse has been locked in for this year's The Everest with The Galaxy winner Private Harry locked in to run in new owner Yulong's slot.
Aethelflaed.
Aethelflaed, a runner up in the Group 1 VRC Oaks, made her comeback from a long lay-off with victory in a 2000m event at Canberra last Friday.

Ange Postecoglou sacked by Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou has been brutally sacked by Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy despite ending the club's long trophy drought. Tottenham were understood to be finalising the terms of Postecoglou's exit on Friday afternoon, local time, after the Australian returned from holiday. Staff became aware on Friday that Levy had finally decided to sack Postecoglou with confirmation expected to follow. Telegraph Sport exclusively revealed in April that Postecoglou was heading for the Spurs exit whether or not the club won the Europa League. And having seen Postecoglou lift Tottenham's first trophy since 2008 and their first in Europe for 41 years, Levy has decided to make a managerial change. The decision is possibly the most brutal of Levy's long reign, given Postecoglou delivered on his promise of achieving success, changing the style of play and blooding young players. Levy is likely to come under fire for how he has handled the situation after Postecoglou was left in the dark for over a week regarding his future, having won the Europa League and gone on holiday after the final Premier League game of the season. But a 17th-place Premier League finish, alongside the Europa League win, ultimately cost Postecoglou his job even though his squad was decimated by injuries. Levy has put himself under huge pressure to appoint a successor to Postecoglou who can out-perform the Australian. Brentford's Thomas Frank and Fulham's Marco Silva are among the top candidates.

Jones misses out on French Open girls final dream

Emerson Jones' dreams of becoming the first Australian to win the French Open girls' singles title in 57 years are over. The Gold Coast local, who turns 17 on July 7, has fallen at the semi-final stage, bowing out to Lilli Tagger 6-4 7-6 (7-5). The 17-year-old Austrian also dented Jones' hopes of regaining her junior world No.1 ranking and denied her the chance to take on her doubles partner in Saturday's final. Britain's Hannah Klugman won through to her maiden grand slam final after a resilient 1-6 6-3 6-3 defeat of Bulgarian Rositsa Dencheva. She is the first British player to reach a French Open juniors final in almost 50 years. Jones had hoped to make history herself. Australia's last winner of the girls singles title at Roland Garros was Perth-born Lesley Hunt, who triumphed in 1968. She accounted for Capucine Jauffret, of the United States, and Czechia's Vendula Valdmannova, a Wimbledon semi-finalist last year, both in three sets earlier in the week. Then came a straight-sets victory over Spain's Charo Esquiva Banuls on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals, where she beat another American Julieta Pareja, the No.9 seed, 7-5 6-4. But although she had beaten Tagger at this year's Australian Open in a hard-fought 4-6 6-2 6-2 quarter-final tussle, this time the Austrian had the answers.
