Second man admits robbery in care home BMW crash case
Reece Parish, of Fordham Road, Sunderland, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via a videolink from prison to admit robbery.
He denied a kidnap charge relating to a woman who was in the BMW 3-series while he and co-accused Sam Asgari-Tabar took it for a test drive.
Asgari-Tabar, of no fixed address, had previously admitted robbery and causing serious injury by dangerous driving to an elderly care home resident who suffered spinal fractures when the car smashed into the building, punching a large hole in the structure.
Judge Robert Spragg said the men will be sentenced on October 17 and he remanded the pair in custody.
He told them: 'You have both very sensibly pleaded guilty to these matters and you will be given credit for that from the sentencing judge in due course.'
Christopher Knox, for Parish, said the defendant was 'regretful and apologetic' about what happened.
At the time of the crash, Asgari-Tabar was subject to a suspended sentence imposed in May, the court heard.
The Crown Prosecution Service indicated that it will not proceed with the kidnap charges against the pair and those alleged offences will lie on file.
Northumbria Police were alerted to reports of a stolen car in Fenham, Newcastle, on the evening of July 10 and a suspect vehicle was spotted in the Sunderland area 15 minutes later.
A pursuit then followed which ended with the BMW crashing into the care home, causing extensive structural damage to the building.
Initially, Northumbria Police said eight residents required hospital treatment.
Two days later, the force said a woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s, neither of whom were in the eight taken to hospital, had died and police inquiries were ongoing.
After the hearing, Chief Superintendent Mark Hall, of Northumbria Police, said: 'This was a shocking incident in one of our communities – the actions of both men that night were incredibly reckless.
'I am pleased the swift and diligent work of all involved in our investigation left them with no choice but to admit their guilt at court.'
Northumbria Police confirmed on Tuesday that the two men will not face charges over the deaths of the two women.
The force said: 'Following the incident, two care home residents died a short time later but no criminal proceedings are to be brought in relation to the deaths.'

Mastodon's Brent Hinds dead at 51 after motorcycle crash as former label leads tributes
Mastodon co-founder William Brent Hinds has died, aged 51, with tributes having been paid to the musician, who was previously the lead guitarist of the heavy metal band Former Mastodon member William Brent Hinds has died aged 51. The musician, who was once the lead guitarist for the heavy metal band, reportedly died in a collision in the US. Brent co-founded the band in 2000 with drummer Brann Dailor, guitarist Bill Kelliher and bassist Troy Sanders. The Grammy nominated group released numerous albums prior to Brent's departure from the line-up in March. The band have been among those paying tribute to its former member following the news that he died this week. Brent reportedly died in a crash in Atlanta last night. It has been reported Brent's motorcycle is said to have collided with an SUV near Boulevard, Atlanta, and he was rushed to the hospital after being found unresponsive. The outlet reports that his death was confirmed by the Fulton County medical examiner's office. A medical report, obtained by the Sun US, reportedly said that he suffered a "fracture in the left leg along with multiple lacerations and abrasions". The outlet added that medical records state: "Despite resuscitative efforts, the death was pronounced at 21:28 hours." In a preliminary statement, the Atlanta Police Department said that officers "located an unresponsive male" who was involved in a collision last night, though have not named the individual. It continues: "The male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of collision. Medical personnel pronounced the male deceased. The other driver involved, a female who occupied a BMW SUV remained on scene. "The APD Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances. Preliminary investigation indicates the male was traveling West on Boulevard. The female operating the BMW SUV failed to yield while turning left and collided into the male victim who was operating the Harley Davidson. The investigation remains active at this time. Tributes have been paid to Brent this week following the news of his death. One fan wrote on X: "Rest in Power Brent Hinds. Jam some Mastodon today." Another said: "Damm, I loved his playing style and eccentricity, he left a mark." Mastodon said on Instagram: "We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we've shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. "Our hearts are with Brent's family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone's privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent." A statement issued by the band's former record label Relapse read: "Our hearts are broken with the news of Brent Hinds' tragic passing. It is an understatement to say that Mastodon forever changed the course of Relapse's history, for the absolute better. "The records Mastodon released with Relapse are all time classics across any genre, and they would not sound the way they sound, without Brent. His larger than life personality was eclipsed only by his monstrous musicianship. "Our love goes out to Brent's friends and family, the rest of Mastodon and everyone else lucky enough to have had their lives changed by the music that Brent brought to the world. - Rennie Jaffe/Relapse Records."

Former priest ‘instilled culture of fear' enabling him to sexually abuse women
A former priest convicted of sexual offences against nine women 'instilled a culture of fear' within church members which enabled him to abuse his victims, the Crown Prosecution Service has said. Christopher Brain, 68, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, was the leader of the Nine O'Clock Service (NOS), part of the Church of England, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, between 1986 and 1995. On Wednesday, he was found guilty of 17 counts of indecent assault during the years he led the movement by a jury at Inner London Crown Court. The former priest was cleared of a further 15 counts of indecent assault. The following day, the 11-strong jury was discharged after failing to reach a verdict on five more counts, having started deliberations on August 12. In total, Brain was charged with one count of rape and 36 counts of indecent assault between 1981 and 1995 against 13 women. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. Julie Moss, senior crown prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'Chris Brain abused the trust and power he gained as a religious leader to sexually exploit and abuse young women. 'He instilled a culture of fear to subjugate and control NOS members into submission and to do his bidding. 'Brain discouraged members of the Nine O Clock service from having any contact with family or friends outside of the NOS community to isolate members them and make them susceptible to his control.' Ms Moss said Brain had set up a 'home base team' where he required female NOS members to assist his household, including 'attending upon him in his bedroom' before he slept, which is when many of the offences occurred. She added: 'The victims were too scared of being excluded from the religious group to refuse. 'This became known as the 'putting to bed rota'. 'Brain clearly engaged in controlling behaviour and is a narcissist who subjected his victims to awful and horrendous act of sexual violence. 'We hope that these convictions help in some part to see justice delivered for the victims.' Addressing the jury on Thursday, Judge Freya Newbery said: 'I am going to discharge you now on those counts. For you it all comes to an end now. 'I am really grateful for such a lot of time that you have given.' Ms Newbury gave the jurors the option of exemption from jury service if summoned within the next 10 years. A further hearing to determine whether prosecutors believe there are grounds for a retrial for the charges was set for September 4.
