Eight Florida Gators named to 2025 Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team

The 2025 edition of the coaches' preseason All-SEC Teams was released on Tuesday and included eight members of Florida football's roster for the upcoming campaign. Redshirt senior offensive linemen Jake Slaughter and Austin Barber both earned first-team honors to lead the Gators, while redshirt senior defensive lineman Caleb Banks, senior kicker Trey Smack, and redshirt senior long-snapper Rocco Underwood were second-team mentions. Sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Eugene Wilson III and edge defender Tyreak Sapp round out the nominations on the third team. For Slaughter, this is his seventh first-team nomination and second for an All-SEC first team while Barber earned his second preseason All-SEC first-team nomination after being named to the media's first-team selection following SEC Media Days. Banks earned his third preseason All-SEC second-team honors entering his third season in Gainesville, Smack got his second preseason All-SEC second-team call for both the place kicker and kickoff specialist positions, and Underwood also earned his second All-SEC second-team nomination following his Patrick Mannelly Award-winning campaign in 2024. Lagway got his first All-SEC honor after not being chosen by the media following SEC Media Days while Wilson, who is coming off a season-ending injury last fall, is looking to pick up where he left off. Sapp was named to the preseason Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List following a season in which he led the Gators with seven sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss for 48 yards while tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles. Kansas City Chiefs DE Ashton Gillotte appreciates growth in his special teams role

During his press conference on Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte shared his appreciation for any opportunities on special teams. "I think (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator) (Dave) Toub has put me in a lot of positions to work and compete," said Gillotte, "and that is kind of the bridge of trust there, him putting me in a position just to be able to work or put my talents on display. Then just doing it from there." Gillotte spent four seasons at Louisville. Last season, he earned Second-team All-ACC honors and led the Cardinals with 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, starting 12 games and recording 43 total tackles. He embraces the chances to play on special teams because it gets him in the game aside from the defensive game plan. "Yeah, obviously. Anything that gets you on the field is a good thing, and special teams is a big part of our game. Obviously, we want to get our special teams to be number one or number two type, because it is a phase of the game," said Gillotte, "The hidden phase or lost phase. Us being good on that will help set up our offense better (and) our defense better. So, really, any way we can contribute." The Chiefs have solid depth on the defensive line, but with recent injuries, it could put Gillotte in more packages for Steve Spagnuolo and less time on special teams during the season.

Lakers coach: Luka Doncic's fitness is 'work in progress'

One of the biggest storylines for the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason and heading into the 2025-26 campaign is Luka Doncic's physical transformation. After being criticized for being fat and out of shape over the last few years, he got in the lab this summer and got into dramatically better shape. He has reportedly dropped 30 pounds since last summer, and he has played very well for his native Slovenia during a few recent tune-up games in advance of EuroBasket 2025. However, he will have to continue to be fully committed to his health and fitness for him to fully tap into his vast potential in the years to come. Lakers assistant coach Greg St. Jean knows that Doncic still has room for improvement. St. Jean is currently with the Slovenian national team, which means he has seen the superstar in an up-close and personal way lately, and he said Doncic can still get better this summer. Via BasketNews: "I think it's still a work in progress," St. Jean told BasketNews. "I think the summer's not over yet. And he's going to continue to get better. I think we'll continue to see as he gets more in-game shape with some rhythm. "He's been doing a lot of training, and now he's going to be playing five-on-five competition. His game last week [the conversation took place on Friday] was the first time he's played five-on-five in a long time. "So it's a work in progress. We'll continue to see him play more and more, and as the tournament progresses, and then getting ready for the Lakers season," the Lakers coach continued. St. Jean wants to see the 26-year-old continue to head forward on the path he's currently on. "I think he's done a fantastic job working hard the entire summer. And that's something that we're going to wait and see. But that's the goal, right, is for him to continue to be able to push and play," he said. "He's somebody who plays a lot of heavy minutes, and he carries a heavy load. So that's going to be important for him as he continues to improve his conditioning. But we're really proud of him and he's done a great job so far," St. Jean concluded. Despite being out of shape and a bit hobbled last season, Doncic still put up 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists a game after being traded to the Lakers. Several people across the league have said recently that they feel the Slovenian native is poised to have an MVP-caliber season and possibly even win the award.
