Coimbatore police arrest Andhra native for cyber fraud

The Hindu05-05-2025

The cybercrime police in Coimbatore on Monday arrested a man from Andhra Pradesh on the charge of cheating a woman of ₹11.06 lakh in a part-time job-cum-investment scam. Vootla Ravi Teja, 34, from Kondapaturu in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, was arrested by a special team of the cybercrime police.
According to the police, a 32-year-old woman from Coimbatore lodged a complaint earlier this year, stating that she was cheated of ₹11,06,839 by an unknown person, who promised her higher returns from online investments.
The police said the woman joined a WhatsApp group after seeing an advertisement on an online part-time job on Instagram. She was asked to get in touch with a person on Telegram, who asked her to review links of advertisements shared via ShareChat. She was later lured into investment schemes and she paid a total of ₹11,06,839 in multiple transactions.
Though her earnings were shown credited to an online valet, she was asked to invest more money to withdraw the amount. Suspecting fraud, she approached the police, who arrested the accused.

Chandigarh: Trio wanted for ₹14-lakh car sale fraud in net

The cybercrime police have arrested three persons from Mumbai for allegedly duping a city resident of over ₹14 lakh through a vehicle auction scam, operated through a WhatsApp group. Those arrested have been identified are Kunal Sanjay Bhai Talasaniya, 23, Ajay Manubhai Jhamuriya, 19, and Ronit Kamlesh Jadhav, 21, all from Mumbai. Complainant Gurdial Singh said he received a link from an unknown number through which he got himself added to a WhatsApp group named 'Bank Auction Vehicle Group'. In that group, someone claimed that two cars were parked at vehicle yards in Haridwar (Uttarakhand) and Jammu for sale. Having cross-verified the vehicle locations with his sources, Singh proceeded to transfer ₹14,13,890 into various bank accounts he was provided via WhatsApp. However, when his staff went to take delivery of the vehicles, they discovered that no such sale had taken place. The FIR was registered on March 28. Cybercrime officials caught Kunal Talasaniya near Shanti Niketan, Satrasta, Mumbai, who admitted that he had opened the fraud-linked bank account on directions of Ajay Jhamuriya for a 5% commission. Jhamuriya was apprehended from Satrasta Chowk. He revealed that he had handed over the KYC documents to a person named Salman, who paid him a 7% commission per transaction, officials said. Ronit Jadhav, nabbed near Sai Sharda Building, Jacob Circle, disclosed that he too opened a bank account and passed it on to a person named Tushar for a 5% cut, officials said, adding that they have got them on remand for further interrogation.

Two TTEs suspended after bribery video on Sangam Express goes viral

A case of bribery involving seat allotment on the Sangam Express, running from Prayagraj to Meerut, has come to light after a video went viral on social media. The video shows TTEs accepting money from passengers while assigning seats. Following a complaint made by the passenger to the Railway Minister on X, the Prayagraj DRM suspended both TTEs involved. Dr Vishal Sharma, head of the department of Journalism at CSJM University, Kanpur, who shared the video on social media platform X, alleged that during his journey from Kanpur to Meerut on Saturday night, the TTE not only took a bribe from him but was also illegally selling seats to other passengers in violation of railway rules. According to Dr Sharma, he was travelling on a general ticket and requested the TTE to upgrade it to a reserved ticket. Initially, the TTE delayed the process and allegedly demanded ₹700, which he paid. However, he claimed that no receipt was provided to him for the amount, even by the time he reached his destination in Meerut. Meanwhile, a woman passenger travelling in the AC 3-tier coach reported that seat number 33 in M1 coach was vacant. During this time, the second TTE allegedly demanded a ₹800 bribe and allotted the seat after accepting ₹700. Another passenger captured the transaction on video, showing the TTE taking money in exchange for the seat. However, after reaching Meerut and not receiving a receipt for the money he had paid, Dr. Sharma shared the video on Instagram and lodged a complaint by tagging the railway minister, DRM, and other relevant officials. Following the video going viral, Prayagraj DRM Rajneesh Agarwal suspended both TTEs — Sushil Kumar (CIT) and Hitendra Singh (Deputy CIT). He also shared information about the action taken in the matter through a post on Instagram. According to Amit Kumar Singh, PRO of the Prayagraj division, action was taken against both TTEs after the video of the incident went viral. He added that an investigation into the matter is currently underway.
