Time of India13-06-2025
Closing arguments are set to begin Friday in the second murder trial of Karen Read, who is charged with killing her
Boston police officer
boyfriend. The prosecution of Karen Read has garnered massive internet attention and drawn crowds to the Massachusetts courthouse where her second trial began in April.
Karen Read's first trial stemming from the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, collapsed in July 2024 after the jury could not reach a verdict.
Here are ten things you need to know in Karen Read's trial:
-She and O'Keefe were together for about two years before his 2022 death, but the latter part of the pair's relationship was troubled, prosecutors said during her first trial.
-Prosecutors have accused Read of hitting O'Keefe, a Boston police officer, with her SUV in January 2022 during a night out drinking with friends. They allege she struck O'Keefe while driving in reverse and left him to die outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts.

-Karen Read was charged with murder, although she maintains innocence and argues she is being framed by police. She faces multiple charges and is accused of dropping O'Keefe off at a fellow police officer's home after a night of drinking, hitting him with her car and driving away from the scene.
-During the first trial, her defense argued that other police officers who saw O'Keefe that night are complicit in his death and trying to frame Read for the murder.
-The prosecution, on the other hand, painted the picture of Read as an angry girlfriend whose strained relationship with O'Keefe led her to kill him.
-Read, 45, has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene. A mistrial was declared last year after jurors said they were at an impasse.

-Google's search, Karen Read's alleged confession, broken taillight and O'Keefe's injuries are some of the key evidence that have come forward during the hearing of trial.
-Read's second trial began in early April, and the first witnesses testified on April 23. So far, witnesses that have testified in the second trial include McCabe, O'Keefe's mother, police officers and paramedics involved in the case.

-Karen Read gave several media interviews after declining to take the stand in her first trial. She also gave permission to HBO to create the mini-series, A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read, which has been watched by millions.
-If she is found guilty of second-degree murder, she could face a maximum sentence of life in prison under Massachusetts law.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta's attacker is a Gujarati rickshaw puller: Here's what we know about the Mahadev devotee

The man who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya, a 41-year-old from Rajkot, Gujarat. Here's what we know about him so far. Delhi Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh has revealed that the accused conducted a recce of her residence for nearly 24 hours before launching the assault. According to him, the attacker reached the CM's Shalimar Bagh residence to observe the surroundings. He spent the night nearby in the Civil Lines area, according to Singh. Sakriya came to a 'Jan Sunwai' public hearing with documents, said to be a petition about a jailed relative. According to a NEWS18 report, the said relative is in Tihar Jail. Eyewitnesses revealed that he had given papers to the Delhi CM but suddenly grabbed her hand. It sparked a scuffle. Security quickly overpowered him and handed him over to the police. BJP leaders suspect political motives but nothing is confirmed. Some social media users claim he is an Aam Admi Party (AAP) supporter. The financial condition of the accused may be challenging as he is a rickshaw puller, the mother confirmed. Sakriya's mother, Bhanu, has said that his mind works in such a way that he may hit anyone. She revealed that he had even assaulted her once, forcing her to leave home for 15 days. 'He is a devotee of Mahadev. He left home saying that he was going to Ujjain. He visits there at least once a month. I don't know when he went from Ujjain to Delhi,' she told ANI. According to her, he suffers from mental health issues but never takes any medicine. She added that he has a deep love for animals. He used to beat everyone at home; his nature had just become like that." He apparently became upset when the Supreme Court ordered the removal of all stray dogs in Delhi NCR. The interest in 'Rekha Gupta' on Google shot up on August 20 after the incident. However, several BJP leaders have now dismissed it. Party president Virendra Sachdeva clarified that Gupta was not slapped. Instead, she hit her head against a table during the scuffle when the attacker grabbed her hand. 'It seems that the slap or stone-throwing stories are fabricated. Jan Sunvai will continue. CM is resting right now, but she has said that she will not cancel her programmes," HT quoted Sachdeva as saying. BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said the attacker had pulled CM Gupta's hair and abused her. Vice President Kapil Mishra condemned the act, while BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj termed the assault 'cowardly'.

Google settles YouTube children's privacy lawsuit

Google will pay $30 million to settle a lawsuit claiming it violated the privacy of children using YouTube by collecting their personal information without parental consent, and using it to send targeted ads. A preliminary settlement of the proposed class action was filed on Monday night in San Jose, California, federal court, and requires approval by U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan van Keulen. Google denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle. The Alphabet unit agreed in 2019 to pay $170 million in fines and change some practices to settle similar charges by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Some critics viewed that accord as too lenient. Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to similar requests. The parents or guardians of 34 children accused Google of violating dozens of state laws by letting content providers bait children with cartoons, nursery rhymes and other content to help it collect personal information, even after the 2019 settlement. Van Keulen dismissed claims against the content providers -including Hasbro, Mattel, Cartoon Network and DreamWorks Animation – in January, citing a lack of evidence tying them to Google's alleged data collection. Mediation began the next month, leading to the settlement. The proposed class covers U.S. children under 13 who watched YouTube between July 1, 2013 and April 1, 2020. Lawyers for the plaintiffs said there could be 35 million to 45 million class members. They said if 1% to 2% submit claims, a rate comparable to similar earlier cases, claimants could receive $30 to $60 each, before deducting legal fees and costs. The lawyers plan to seek up to $9 million from the settlement for legal fees. Alphabet posted net income of $62.7 billion on revenue of $186.7 billion in the first half of 2025. The case is C.H. et al v Google LLC et al, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 19-07016.

Discom officials to face FIR for electrocution deaths during rain in Gurgaon

1 2 Gurgaon: Executive and junior engineers, and sub-divisional officers (SDOs) of the discom will face penal action if deaths are reported due to electrocution during rain, chief principal secretary to the CM Rajesh Khullar has directed police. But this order doesn't apply to the three fatalities recorded on the night of July 9, when a spate of heavy monsoon showers triggered chaos in the city. Though a case for death by negligence was registered in one of the electrocution deaths, no officials were named in the FIR. Asked about fixing accountability in these three cases, Khullar said on Tuesday that these incidents were under investigation and appropriate action would be taken. "However, now on, in case of any such incidents in the future, the discom official will be named in FIR at the time registration of the case," he said. Officials said the senior officer also directed the discom to deploy its staff for field inspections to check power lines in the city. Among those who died on July 9 was a graphic designer, Akshat Jain. He was returning home from a gym when his motorcycle skidded on Ghasola Road and he came in contact with wires submerged in rainwater. Pawan Kumar, a 26-year-old food delivery executive, died after being electrocuted near Sector 18. His body was found next to an electric pole. A shopkeeper who attempted to rescue him also suffered electrical burns. Prashant Mishra (22) died in Arjun Nagar after touching a railing that had become electrified by a frayed wire submerged in ankle-deep water. He was declared dead before help arrived. Last year too, three people were electrocuted near IFFCO Chowk after they came in contact with a high-voltage wire that snapped because of an uprooted tree and dangled into a waterlogged footpath. The pedestrians were walking towards a metro station in the rain when the incident occurred. Officials said Khullar has directed Gurgaon police commissioner Vikas Arora to register FIRs against concerned officials if any such incidents occur. "All leaves of employees and officers of the power department have been cancelled till Nov. Every officer must personally inspect the field, check power lines, and ensure proper trimming and disposal of tree branches," Khullar told officials. DHBVN has given the responsibility of 'safety officer' to the executive engineer. Any citizen can submit information about any infrastructure flaws by providing a photo, video, Google location or landmark, name of the sub-division, etc., on the executive engineer WhatsApp number 9050960500, the discom announced.
