Sekhukhune United lead race to sign former Chiefs defender

Ramahlwe Mphahlele is reportedly on the radar of Sekhukhune United, who are believed to be the front-runners for his signature following his departure from AmaZulu FC at the end of last season.
While Babina Noko appear not to be the only club currently showing concrete interest in the veteran PSL defender, they are seen as the favourites to secure his services ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The 35-year-old made 16 Betway Premiership appearances for Usuthu during the 2024/25 season, but was deemed surplus to requirements by the KwaZulu-Natal outfit. According to a source close to the player, three clubs have expressed interest in bringing him on board.
'He's a good professional and would add leadership to any team in the PSL. I'm told Sekhukhune are in for him as well as another club in KZN but it's not clear who the club is from the information I have,' the source told Phakaaathi.
'It was actually surprising to see AmaZulu let him go, because he performed well last season. Just look at the stats and see how many games he played.'

The well-travelled Mphahlele has previously turned out for Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaizer Chiefs before spending the past few seasons at AmaZulu.

Sekhukhune United will face Stellenbosch in the MTN8 semi-final at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday (6pm kick-off). A win and a clean sheet in that match would boost Sekhukhune's chances heading into the second leg at their home ground, the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, in a week's time. Tinkler is an ambitious coach who wants to deliver Babina Noko's first silverware this season, having previously brought maiden success to former clubs Cape Town City and SuperSport United. However, to achieve that, he will need his talisman, Makgalwa to deliver. Makgalwa had an outstanding campaign with Sekhukhune last season, scoring six goals and registering 11 assists in 32 matches across all competitions. The 28-year-old's exploits didn't go unnoticed, as he was nominated for the coveted Footballer of the Season and Players' Player of the Season awards. However, despite starting in all three of Sekhukhune's wins since the start of the season, Tinkler feels that his talisman hasn't been at his best. Given the rumours linking him with other clubs, Tinkler suspects that might have distracted him. I think he has one assist — from a corner — and hasn't created an opportunity for himself or others. 'There are always those rumours, especially after he was nominated for the Footballer of the Season award and having racked up the most assists. 'A lot of that comes from either the media or the agent. But we've made Keletso aware we'll never stand in his way of getting a better contract elsewhere. 'But there has to be an offer, and there hasn't been one. It's all talk. What he must be aware of is that he's a professional and has a contract with Sekhukhune United. 'So he needs to duplicate what he did last season so that clubs interested in him aren't just hearing hearsay from his agent or the press.' Makgalwa is only one piece in Sekhukhune's puzzle, as many pundits believe the club has assembled a squad capable of challenging for honours this campaign. Tinkler admitted that they have a strong squad at their disposal, but their main challenge has been a congested fixture schedule. 'The hard part is what we currently find ourselves in — it's a pity that everything has to be congested and squeezed into one month,' Tinkler said. 'You have to compete in the league while playing in a massive competition such as the MTN8. The recovery process is not great. 'I could see that our performance against TS Galaxy was not great because everything is squeezed, and you end up playing about eight games in one month.' One of the strongest components we have in our team is we're mentally very strong. 'We don't look at the name of the country. Whoever we play against, we always try and give our best because we know we're representing our country,' he said. 'Whether we play Niger, Sudan or Nigeria, we can never walk onto a football pitch and think we have won the game. We go out there every day to suffer, to protect the badge and to fight for our country. 'In this team, there's never a moment where we look at the country and say it's a small country because they haven't won a game, and then we approach it with a negative mindset. 'We always focus and play to win. Whether it's Uganda, Niger, Guinea or Algeria, we go in with the same mentality.'

South Africa coach Molefi Ntseki says they learnt valuable lessons from their hard fought win over Guinea earlier in the week to take to their African Nations Championship [Chan] group clash against Niger at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Friday night. Bafana go into the match sitting third in the Group C with four points from two matches, and three more points will help them to remain in control of their destiny as the knockout stages approaches. 'I think the lessons learned from that game [against Guinea], which we view as positives, include the strong mentality of our players and their high level of concentration. 'This is despite the fact that they were under siege for the better part of the match,' he said. 'We stuck to our discipline and game plan and every member of the team had to dig deep to make sure the result ended in our favour. The most important thing was the technical discipline when we were out of possession. 'They carried out their technical discipline for almost 60 minutes during the game. There were turnovers and transitions for and against in between. We managed to hold onto the ball for longer periods, we managed to create goal scoring opportunities and we managed to score the two goals.
