Cordero and Gomez Kodela retire as Pumas winners after thumping Uruguay
Cordero, 12 years after his test debut, came off the bench and scored a try just moments after tighthead prop Gomez Kodela walked off in his last professional match at age 41, the oldest to ever play for the Pumas.
They contributed to an eight-try victory to uphold the Pumas' unbeaten record against Uruguay — now 31-0 — and rebound from a humbling two-series loss at home to England.
The Pumas started with a second-minute penalty try then bombed at least three more chances before 92-cap center Matias Moroni, the only backline starter with more than nine caps, broke a couple of tackles to score in injury time and break a 7-7 deadlock.
Argentina reset at halftime and dominated the second half.
Captain Julian Montoya plunged for a try off a ruck and that was Gomez Kodela's moment to leave to applause, then vice-captain Cordero touched down after seven minutes on the field. The move was begun by first-time starting flyhalf Nicolas Roger, who impressed.
Winger Rodrigo Isgro had a try disallowed because lock Pedro Rubiolo was yellow-carded for shoulder-to-head contact in a ruck. It was upgraded on review to a 20-minute red card.
Scrumhalf Santiago Alvarez's converted try narrowed the gap to seven near the hour mark, but the Pumas backs blew away Uruguay the rest of the way.
Isgro scored, along with Justo Piccardo, Agustin Moyano, and Roger, who also slotted five of seven goalkicks.
Argentina has the Rugby Championship next month, while Uruguay plays Paraguay next weekend to begin qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

The NRL great is expected to be handed the Kangaroos coaching role any day now. Walters appears to have got the job over Cameron Smith and other candidates, which will see him take over his first head coaching role since leaving the Broncos at the end of 2024. Walters will be looking to help lead Australia to victory over England in the first Ashes series since 2003. However, his first job as coach could be to persuade the likes of Tabuai-Fidow, Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui from changing allegiances. Samoa lost 3-0 to England last year in their international series, but boast an extremely strong side. Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton, Brian To'o, Terrell May and Blaize Talagi already make up the squad in a side that is growing in strength. But Walters would like to keep Tabuai-Fidow in the side who would be in contention to play fullback, or revert to his previous role in the centres, if available for selection. Regardless, Walters is now facing a new task as incoming coach. And the new rule has raised issues. Rugby League fans divided over international rules Samoa is not considered a tier-one nation so if Tabuai-Fidow, Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui were to make the switch, they would still be able to continue playing Origin for their respective states. And fans have become increasingly confused and frustrated with reports of players switching. Many feel the players should only be able to play for one country and not be able to switch after making their debut. However, the argument is State of Origin and the international game is strengthened with as many players getting involved as possible. The Kangaroos will play a three-match Ashes series for the first time since 2003, with the first Test against England getting underway at London's Wembley Stadium on October 25. NRL legend Brad Fittler was considered a favourite for the role, but withdrew from the race due to his media commitments with Channel Nine. The ARLC has been on the lookout for someone to replace Mal Meninga as Kangaroos coach, since the World Cup-winning mentor stepped down to join expansion side the Perth Bears, who enter the NRL in 2027. But after the Commission voted to uphold the ban on club coaches being able to take the role and Fittler pulled out of the running, it was essentially a two-horse race between Smith and Walters to be handed the reins for Australia's Ashes campaign. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — After nearly three decades, MotoGP will return to Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires and a renovated racetrack in 2027, with local authorities hoping it will help bring Formula 1 back as well. The top motorcycling circuit has been staging its races in Argentina at the Termas de Río Hondo racetrack since 2014, in the province of Santiago del Estero. MotoGP last raced in Buenos Aires in 1999. 'Buenos Aires used to be the capital of motorsports and motorcycling in the region, and today it begins to regain that status,' Mayor Jorge Macri said Monday while making the announcement at the Óscar and Juan Gálvez racetrack. 'But we're going for more: this is the first step toward applying again to host Formula 1,' he added. To host the MotoGP event, the capital committed to a complete renovation of the municipal racetrack in October. Racing legends like Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher competed there in the past. The German driver won the last F1 race there, in 1998. The work on the circuit will include the track, pits, paddock, bumpers and safety zones, according to the Buenos Aires City Hall. Organizers estimate that MotoGP will have a direct economic impact on the city of approximately $150 million. It will also generate jobs in sectors such as hospitality, gastronomy, transportation, and services.
