Tour showcases Mercer County's underground railroad

(WKBN) — A popular historical tour in Mercer County is back for its third year. The Mercer County Underground Railroad Tour offers a unique opportunity to explore two significant settlements in the county, as well as former safe houses used to aid slaves on their path to freedom. This year, the tour is a partnership between VisitMercerCountyPA, Mercer County's tourism agency, and the city of Farrell for their Juneteenth celebration. Peggy Mazyck, an organizer for the event, said the tour is a way to preserve Mercer County's history and educate attendees on something they might not have known before. 'It's important to preserve and recognize the history of the county and how strong a role Mercer County played in the movement to help the slaves be free,' Mazyck said. 'This area showed a lot of courage.' Mazyck said about 15 houses in Mercer County were part of the Underground Railroad. The route came from New Castle through Mercer and Jamestown, then to Ashtabula or Erie, and across the lake to Canada and freedom. One of the 15 homes is the Gibson House — also known as the Mark Twain Manor — in Jamestown and is a stop on the tour. Remnants of the secret passageways slaves used are still visible today, including part of a door that leads to two small rooms before getting to a very low-hanging safe room. Mazyck said the county also had two settlements for African Americans. One for freed slaves was called Pandenarium. A historical marker stands along Route 19 in East Lackawannock Township. The other was Liberia, a refuge for fugitive ensalved individuals, in Stoneboro. The tour will be conducted by Rev. Roland Barksdale-Hall, a local historian, author and genealogist who specializes in African American heritage. Those interested in attending can call Mazyck at 724-971-3544 or email peggymaz@ Tickets are $60, but those who register by this Friday can get $10 off. Mazyck said there are six spots left. The tour will be next Friday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and starts at the Mercer County Visitor's Center in Sharon. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
