Warren city leaders plant heritage tree
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — America's semiquincentennial isn't until next year, but Trumbull County is kicking off its celebrations with something that'll take root and stand tall for future generations.
County and city leaders joined others in planting a Heritage Tree behind City Hall Wednesday. The program is inspired by Boston's historic Liberty Tree during the Revolutionary War.
Trumbull is among the first eight counties to receive a white oak tree under the America 250-Ohio initiative. The location for the white oak was picked based on the county's historic legacy.
'It represents the resilience of Trumbull County tourism, it represents the resilience of Ohio and we're excited to be able to under this 250 umbrella to be able to share our history and how it connects with national history,' said Beth Kotwis Carmichael with the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau.
Throughout 2025 and 2026, a Heritage Tree will be planted in all 88 counties.

Indian Trail roads affected by damage to underground utility lines
INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — One road is closed and another is down to one lane in the Hemby Bridge community due to damage to an underground utility line Monday afternoon. In this episode of Aloha Authentic, host Kamaka Pili welcomes cultural practitioner and 8th-generation weaver Keoua Nelsen to share his ʻike of lauhala. Keoua shares how his journey began under the guidance of his grandmother. Like many, he had a hard time getting the hang of the actual weaving. When frustration set in, he offered to help his grandmother gather leaves and material for her to weave. What seemed like a pause in learning became a foundational lesson. For Keoua, understanding where the leaves come from, how they grow, and the energy they carry is even more important than the weaving itself. He explains that the color of a hala leaf isn't just about the plant, it's shaped by its environment. Soil, minerals, water, and even weather all affect the quality and appearance of the leaf. Lauhala was originally woven for functional uses like mats, pillows, and baskets. Today, it is still rooted in tradition, however it has taken a more decorative role with its complex patterns and designs. As an 8th-generation weaver, Keoua carries a proud legacy. He recalls how his grandmother and her sisters were once asked to help recreate a lauhala sail for the Polynesian Voyaging Society. While honored, they respectfully declined. The challenge was too great given the complexity of the task. To bring the episode to life, Keoua walks Kamaka through a basic weaving technique to make a bracelet, a small but meaningful hands-on experience that ties together tradition, storytelling, and practice. Protesters in NYC rally against the Trump administration's travel ban
LOWER MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Protesters and activists took to Foley Square to push back on the Trump administration's travel ban, now in effect. They tied last week's terror attack in Colorado to the ban, saying it's necessary to preserve national security and prevent terrorism. More Local News The ban specifically bars entry from Haiti, Libya, Chad, Sudan, Eritrea, Yemen, Somalia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Equatorial Guinea. It further restricts travel from Cuba, Venezuela, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Laos. Protestors say the ban unfairly targets Black and brown people and will separate families from loved ones. 350,000 New Yorkers were born in countries targeted by the ban.
