Cardiff City next manager odds as Premier League greats tipped but list tells its own story

Aaron Ramsey's three-match reign as Cardiff City caretaker manager began with a frustrating 1-1 draw with Oxford United on Easter Monday.
Given the Bluebirds were the only team in the bottom five not to win on that day, it makes relegation to League One all the more likely, even if they do still have a puncher's chance in the final two matches.
Supporters' eyes will doubtless turn to the bookmakers' odds list for who might be in line to take on the job this summer, however in all likelihood it will depend on which division the club finds itself in next season.

Ramsey (3/1) himself leads the bookies' list of favourites, however the Wales captain appeared to dismiss that out of hand after his first game in charge, insisting he was going to recover from his most recent hamstring injury setback and is determined to don the boots again.
'I am just taking these three games. I'm still recovering from a hamstring operation, I'm still in the middle of rehab and I'm focused on getting back to full fitness," he said. "This is a role where it's going to be an intense 10 days now then I can relax and get back into my rehab. I'm just looking at the next two.'
It's not totally out of the realms of possibility that he takes on a player-manager role, of course, however that places a lot of potential strain and responsibility on him at an already crisis-stricken club. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community.
Former Bluebirds midfielder Gary O'Neil is next on the list at 8/1. While Cardiff fans would bite your hand off to have him at the helm following his work with Bournemouth and Wolves, his last two jobs have been in the Premier League and it's highly unlikely he will drop down two divisions.
The same can be said of Sean Dyche (12/1) and Steven Gerrard (12/1), who will surely have their sights set higher. Indeed, former Swansea City manager Steve Cooper (12/1), who guided Nottingham Forest to the Premier League before taking over at Leicester City, was touted for the Bluebirds job after Erol Bulut left, but WalesOnline were told he was aiming higher than a relegation scrap in the second tier - therefore a League One club is almost certainly out of the question.
Rob Edwards (12/1) succeeded in League Two with Forest Green before getting sacked at Watford. He steered Luton to the Premier League, then to relegation again and endured a disaster in the second tier before his sacking. He might just end up keen on a League One club.
Wayne Rooney (14/1) is an interesting one. A big name, something Vincent Tan is bound to like, a young manager but someone who has failed at three Championship clubs, he is likely to drop into League One. He'd represent a huge gamble, though, given his track record.
Neil Warnock (14/1) was always going to be on the list, but at 76, even for him, a permanent job in the dugout is surely beyond him now.
Another interesting name is Des Buckingham (16/1), who helped guide Oxford United to promotion from League One and has admirers among the City fan base.
Clearly, though, the below list tells its own story. Full of star-studded names and experienced managers, all of whom are no doubt aiming higher up the pyramid, while the odd name or two sticks out as a potentially reasonable shout.
Either way, the picture is only likely to become far clearer once relegation is confirmed - or not, if that is somehow the case come full time at Carrow Road. The pool will get smaller and those more aspirational names will, very likely, disappear.

Chelsea offered chance to sign Manchester United transfer target for £45m
Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign Manchester United transfer target Emiliano Martinez for £45million. The Aston Villa goalkeeper looks set to leave this summer after five years with the Midlands club. Unai Emery is reluctant to lose the Argentina international but Villa could be forced into a sale in order to meet PSR, according to The Mirror. Chelsea have chopped and changed goalkeepers over the course of the last few years but are no closer to establishing a No.1. Robert Sanchez has flattered to deceive since his move from Brighton and has lost his place in the side under both Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca. Djordje Petrovic impressed briefly stepping in for Sanchez under Pochettino but was loaned out to Strasbourg last season and is likely to complete a permanent move to the French club. Chelsea spent £24m on Filip Jorgensen 12 months ago, but he too has been unable to convince Maresca he is worthy of becoming the No.1. United's plans for their goalkeeping department remain unclear, meanwhile, with Andre Onana's future a matter of speculation. The Cameroon international joined from Inter two years ago for a fee of close to £50m but he has proved an inadequate successor to David de Gea. A string of high-profile errors has seen United lose faith in the 29-year-old who has been heavily linked with a move. 'Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!' Onana said, according Actu Cameroun, earlier this month with Monaco the latest club to be linked to his services. United are reported to believe that Martinz would favour a move to Old Trafford but Ruben Amorim's priorities reportedly lie elsewhere. The Red Devils have already recruited Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are locked in negotiations with Brentford over the transfer of Bryan Mbeumo. United would also want at least £35m for Onana which has opened the door for Chelsea to make their move. Villa, for their part, are eyeing up a mvoe for Royal Antwerp's Senne Lammens, but there are a number of other clubs tracking the 22-year-old, including United. Arsenal star Mikel Arteta sold for £9m linked with shock Premier League return
A former Arsenal star Mikel Arteta sold for just £9million, could make a surprise transfer back to the Premier League, according to reports. While no new signings have been confirmed yet, Arsenal have been busy this summer transfer window, especially with regards to their midfield. They are set to buy Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and Christian Norgaard from Brentford, who will replace the released Thomas Partey and Jorginho. Another Premier League side overhauling their midfield is newly-promoted Sunderland who have the difficult task of replacing Jobe Bellingham, who was sold to Borussia Dortmund. To do so, it has been widely-reported that the Black Cats will pay a club-record £30.5m to sign Habib Diarra from Strasbourg. The highly-rated 21-year-old was also a target for Leeds, Brighton and Everton, and notably scored for Senegal in their historic win over England earlier this month. But French outlet RMC Sport claim that Sunderland are also interested in signing Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi who spent two years at the Emirates. Guendouzi knows Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris well having worked with him at Lorient but it remains to be seen whether the France international would consider a transfer. The 26-year-old only moved to Lazio on a permanent deal last summer and is considered a key player, but the Serie A club may be forced to sell due its financial situation. Signed by Unai Emery in 2018 for £7m, Guendouzi quickly established himself in Arsenal's first-team despite his tender years, going onto make 82 appearances for the club in two seasons. Appearances: 82 Goals: 1 Assists: 5 Yellow cards: 20 Red Cards: 1 It was expected that he would become a key player for the Gunners for many years to come but he fell out with Arteta after multiple disciplinary issues on the training ground. More Trending The final straw came in June 2020 following a post-match altercation with Brighton's Neal Maupay, during which he grabbed the striker's throat, with Arteta exiling Guendouzi from training. Guendouzi would never again play for Arsenal, loaned out to Hertha Berlin and Marseille before leaving for good in 2022, and upon departing north London said: 'I will never forget any minute spent with the Gunners jersey. 'I will never forget the Emirates Stadium. I will never forget the fans. I won't forget the city. I will never forget everything I've been through here. I will never forget that my only will was to defend with pride Arsenal colours. 'Thanks to all of those who believed in me during my time here, during the good and the bad moments. I can only wish the best to the club and its fan who deserve so much, trust me! 'Goodbye Arsenal, I will never forget you and will be a Gooner forever.' Chelsea could land huge transfer windfall from big-money Liverpool deal
Liverpool's summer spending spree is set to continue but their latest big-money move could also bring a tidy financial benefit for their fellow Premier League side Chelsea Liverpool's move for Marc Guehi could have a knock-on effect for Premier League rivals Chelsea. Mirror Football understands the Blues included a 20 percent sell-on clause when they allowed Guehi to join current club Crystal Palace, meaning an Anfield switch would net them a tidy sum. Guehi is expected to leave Palace this summer rather than leave for a free when his contract expires in 2026. A move to Anfield would see Premier League champions Liverpool continue a spending spree which has already gone past £200million. More than half of that sum can be attributed to the British record move for Florian Wirtz. Arne Slot's side have also added to their back line, with Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong on board, while Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among those to have departed. Palace, who paid £18m for Guehi in 2021, value the centre-back at around £70m. Liverpool are unlikely to go that high, with a £40m sum suggested as a more likely middle-ground, and this would still see Chelsea net £8m. A move for Guehi could also allow Liverpool to approve an exit for Jarell Quansah. The academy graduate, who played 25 times in all competitions, has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen. A windfall for Chelsea could allow them to make further additions to the squad this summer. They have already been busy, getting deals over the line in time for their Club World Cup campaign in the United States. Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr all joined in time for the tournament, as did Mike Penders after a deal for the keeper was agreed last year. Enzo Maresca's side opted against a move for loanee Jadon Sancho, though, paying a penalty fee to send the winger back to Manchester United. Chelsea finished second in their Club World Cup group and are due to face Benfica in the round of 16. The Portuguese club topped their group after a win over Bayern Munich, and Maresca is keen not to underestimate them. "Now we're in a knockout game and in a knockout game anything can happen," he told reporters. "That is not just for us, it's for every club, and the players are aware that at this moment the team that makes the most mistakes will be the team that are back home the day after. "The most important thing is the way we prepare ourselves. It's very complicated at this moment, for many reasons, to see games where the difference between the two teams is big. They are more or less very close, and it's a game where the details are going to make the difference." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
