Walton County to conduct yearly AlertWalton TEST Exercise
WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Walton County Emergency Management (WCEM) department scheduled their sixth annual TEST of the AlertWalton Emergency Notification System for Friday, May 30. According to a news release, this exercise is known as 'Operation: Know Your Zone' and will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Friday. The drill is designed to test the abilities of Walton County's AlertWalton notification system. In the event of an emergency, residents will receive important information to take action. The exercise helps the public understand the evacuation process and residents' evacuation zones, including zones A, B, C, D, and E, in preparation for hurricane season. GCSC Foundation announces '2nd Chance Scholarships' Those outside of evacuation zones will receive notifications with preparedness information. 'Performing this drill on a yearly basis allows our residents to better prepare for future emergencies and helps our staff find ways to improve our practices,' Director of Walton County Emergency Management Jeff Goldberg said. Carnival Cruise Line Issues Weather Warning About This Destination's 'Significant Presence of Sea Ice'
An icy journey is making headlines in the cruise community. Carnival Cruise Line recently sent a letter to passengers aboard its Pride cruise ship about significant sea ice, which may impact the ship's route, according to cruise industry media reports. "At present, in areas along our intended route, there is a significant presence of sea ice which could impact the itinerary," a letter to guests aboard the Carnival Pride stated, as obtained by CruiseFever. Carnival did not respond to a request from Travel + Leisure about the reported customer email. What Is Sea Ice?Sea ice is essentially frozen seawater that sits on top of the ocean. Its size depends on the season, as it expands in the cold and contracts in warmer weather. The Carnival Pride is currently south of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, steaming northeast on a scheduled cruise of Greenland. The ship departed from Baltimore on May 25, according to CruiseMapper. The cruise line celebrated the departure of the Carnival Pride ship on social media, as it was a return of operations to Baltimore after the Key Bridge collapsed several weeks ago. This would not be the first time that Carnival Pride has had issues navigating into the ports of Greenland due to ice. Passengers have previously shared experiences of missed ports or other cancellations due to ice or weather. "Currently sailing on the Pride, we've been told arctic weather is unpredictable and it is unfortunately unsafe to try either port in Greenland," a cruise passenger shared about their experience aboard the Carnival Pride in 2024. "That sucks, but whatever, nature does what nature does." A viral video from separate incident in September 2024 depicted another Carnival ship, Spirit , narrowly dodging a large piece of ice, however there was no damage to the boat. 'The crew did an amazing job at accessing the damage and keeping all of its crew and passengers safe and informed,' a passenger on board the ship shared in the TikTok post. After the incident gained attention in media outlets, a Carnival representative revealed there was no damage or impact in a statement to CNN.

Pastors describe support after Watertown church fire
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Watertown church is trying to figure out what's next after a fire broke out Monday afternoon. A West River tech will cost 911 panel $1.1 million The Watertown Fire Rescue assistant chief told KELOLAND News Tuesday, the cause isn't confirmed yet, but there's a high probability lightning is to blame. A thunderstorm was moving through the area at the time of the fire. Before flames could seen on the roof of Hosanna Lutheran Church, Pastor Craig Werling was inside with another staff member. 'It was pouring rain, it was lightning and we heard a very close, very loud crack, boom, felt it almost as much as heard it,' Craig Werling said. Werling and his wife, Pastor Janine Rew-Werling, say the sanctuary suffered the brunt of the damage. On Monday, holes could be seen in the roof and pews were surrounded by water after the firefight. The couple says the church has a great insurance policy. 'The church is not the building, it's the people,' Craig Werling said. In the meantime, church leaders are figuring out where services could be held temporarily. A special meeting was scheduled for Tuesday night. 'We've had several organizations in town and churches offer us their space and we'll be planning how we're going to move forward,' Craig Werling said. Volk: Oftentimes, when bad things happen people look to pastors for guidance. Who are you two looking to for guidance right now? Craig Werling: Well, we're getting a lot of support from members of the church. Janine Rew-Werling: Yeah, our members are more worried about us than they are about themselves. And most of them have said, 'You take care of us. What can we do for you?' So we have them and we have the promise of Jesus, the Holy Spirit. This isn't the couple's first experience with a church fire. The Werlings say they were pastors at a church in northeastern South Dakota that was struck by lightning in 1999.
