Johari: Keep politics out of mosques and surau
KUALA LUMPUR: Mosques and surau are not places to disseminate political ideologies, said Titiwangsa member of parliament Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
He reminded his constituents that places of worship are meant to strengthen ties between community members.
"Don't bring factions into this surau.
"Don't bring political ideologies here.
"This is for the community," he said in his speech officiating the opening ceremony of Surau Jumaat Al Falah at the People's Housing Project (PPR) Hiliran Ampang.
The surau finally obtained permanent approval from the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department to conduct Friday prayers beginning this month, after waiting for two and a half years.
Johari, who is also the plantation and commodities minister, said that residents of the 940 PPR units from blocks A, B and C can now perform Friday prayers with comfort and ease.
"Prior to this, the other available mosque was already so crowded.
"When I found out that the application was approved, I was very happy.
"Now, we can also host community events here."
He also reminded his constituents to practise fair and transparent administration of the surau and to involve the youth in community events and its administration.
Surau chairman Ahmad Fauzi Murad said this also makes it easier for the elderly to perform Friday prayers instead of crossing the road to get to Masjid Nurul Islam.
Previously, the surau obtained temporary approval to conduct Friday prayers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, the committee pushed for permanent approval, which was finally obtained only a few weeks ago.
Fauzi said none of this would have been possible without Johari, and thanked him for his commitment towards realising the dreams of the committee.
What started as a surau under the PPR's lobby was relocated in 2016 and is now equipped with three large ceiling fans and can accommodate 1,200 people.
Federal Territories' deputy mufti Jamali Mohd Adnan, also attended the opening ceremony, which was followed by Friday prayers.

Former senior minister Teo Chee Hean to be next Temasek chairman, taking over from Lim Boon Heng
Teo Chee Hean will first join Temasek's board as deputy chairman on July 1, before taking the helm in October. - ST FILE SINGAPORE: Former senior minister Teo Chee Hean will be the new chairman for state investor Temasek Holdings, succeeding Lim Boon Heng, who will be stepping down on Oct 9, 2025. Teo will first join Temasek's board as deputy chairman on July 1, before taking the helm in October. Lim has served as the chairman for 12 years, notably guiding Temasek's global expansion and supporting the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, among other efforts such as in corporate governance and sustainability. In a separate statement, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said: 'I thank Lim for his dedicated service at Temasek – under his stewardship, Temasek has expanded its global presence, strengthened its governance processes, and established itself as a leader in sustainable development.' 'I also welcome Teo as the incoming chairman. With his extensive experience in public service and deep understanding of Singapore's strategic priorities, I am confident he will build on Temasek's strong foundations, and steer its continued success in an increasingly complex global environment,' added Wong, who is also Finance Minister. Temasek executive director and chief executive Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara said on June 6 that Teo has had a 'remarkable' public service career across multiple domains. 'I'm pleased to welcome Teo Chee Hean as our fifth chairman... We are privileged that Temasek can benefit from his perspectives and extensive experiences, and we look forward to his stewardship as we navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead,' he said. Teo, a key figure in Singapore's third-generation leadership, served as deputy prime minister from 2009 to 2019 and as Coordinating Minister for National Security from 2011. He was appointed Senior Minister in 2019. He began his career in the navy in 1972 and rose to become chief of navy before leaving the armed forces in 1992 to enter politics. His first Cabinet role was as minister of state for finance and communications. He later held ministerial portfolios in home affairs, defence, education and environment. Temasek also announced on June 6 that Cheng Wai Keung, Stephen Lee and Bobby Chin will be retiring from the board in the coming months. Cheng, who is deputy chairman, and Lee, a director, will step down on June 30 after nearly 14 years and eight years of service, respectively. Chin, also a director, will retire on July 31 after serving for 11 years. Temasek has a net portfolio value of $389 billion as of March 21, 2024. It is a significant contributor to Net Investment Returns Contribution (NIRC), alongside sovereign wealth fund GIC and central bank Monetary Authority of Singapore, which is used for Government spending. Teo noted that in an 'era of deepening global uncertainty', Temasek must remain clear minded on critical matters such as international relations, security and climate change. 'As a key Singapore institution with a global investment footprint, Temasek understands that its long-term success requires both addressing today's risks and opportunities and anticipating tomorrow's trends,' he said. 'I look forward to working with Temasek's Board, management team and members of the wider Temasek family to build on the achievements of Temasek and chart a path for its continued success in the new global environment.' - The Straits Times/ANN

Zachary Levi describes facing wrath of Hollywood for supporting Trump
The 'Shazam!' star endorsed Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Photos: Zachary Levi/Instagram, AP Zachary Levi is opening up on navigating the backlash he's faced due to his support of Donald Trump and espousing controversial views on Covid-19 vaccines. The Shazam! star endorsed Trump in the 2024 presidential election after his preferred candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped out and joined forces with the MAGA leader. Already courting 'cancellation' because of his vaccine scepticism, he called the move 'career suicide' at the time because 'Hollywood is a very, very liberal town.' In a wide-ranging interview published May 22, Levi revealed that he's since experienced the wrath of Hollywood. 'I know that there are people that would prefer not to work with me now because of my opinions. My team has let me know,' he told Variety executive editor Tatiana Siegel. 'They haven't given me any specific names, but there are people who prefer not to work with me at this time. And it's unfortunate.' The self-described Hollywood pariah – whose credits include Chuck , Thor: Ragnarok and Harold And The Purple Crayon – also revealed that while he may be one of few people in the industry who publicly came forward with their support of Trump, he's not the only one. 'I know it to be true because I've gotten messages from lots of people who I won't name but who were very grateful to me for taking the stand that I took,' Levi said. 'They would tell me, 'I want to do that, but I'm so afraid.' And I would tell them, 'Listen, you're on your journey. I'm on my journey. You've got to keep trusting God. And if you feel compelled to step out in that way, then do it boldly and know that you're going to be OK. "And if you don't feel that conviction yet, then don't. It's all good.'' The 44-year-old Louisiana native, who welcomed his first child with photographer Maggie Keating in April, also shared his true thoughts on Trump himself, saying he's not blind to certain issues. 'I was not a fan of Trump's Trumpiness. I didn't like a lot of these personal things, the ways that he carries himself a lot of the time,' Levi confessed. 'I understand people's aversion. Do I think the whole package is somehow perfect? No. In fact, most people who voted for Donald Trump recognise a lot of the imperfections in all of it. Nobody was saying, 'This is the Orange Messiah.'' – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
