Surat wonderstruck with a Tesla Cybertruck on the roads

Indian Express25-04-2025

For the past few days, a Tesla Cybertruck has caused immense excitement in Surat, known popularly as India's Diamond City. Owned by one of Surat's millionaires, Lavji Daliya, popularly known as Lavji Badshah because of his philanthropic work, it is claimed to be India's first such Tesla piece under the Foundation Series. Daliya is a real estate developer and promoter of the Gopin Group,
Daliya's eldest son Piyush told The Indian Express, 'This cybertruck is the only one in India, as per what we checked online. There is no such car imported to India. We booked this car six months ago at the Tesla Showroom at Texas in the USA. After all due process, we got the delivery a few days ago, so we brought the car to Dubai where road registration was done. Finally, the car reached India through the sea route.' The car, manufactured by Elon Musk's Tesla, arrived in Surat on Thursday. The base price of a Cybertruck is 70,000 USD which is almost equal to Rs 60 lakh.
To personalise the vehicle, the Daliyas have emblazoned their business group's name 'Gopin' on it.
Without revealing how much the car cost him, Piyush said, 'The logistic charges were huge. The car has seating capacity of five people and after the car landed in Surat, I drove it carrying my parents and my younger brother. It was an awesome experience to drive such a car and we are hopeful that the company would open its showroom in India. The vehicle is in major demand among the car-lovers of India.'
Piyush further said, 'It takes six hours of electric charging and on a single charge, the car can run up to 550 kilometres. We are using Dubai RTO registration in India. The car is fully automatic with all the latest features and some innovative features which are not found in other imported cars. This car is in high demand among customers worldwide. The trunk capacity in the car is also huge.'
The 55-year-old Lavjibhai 'Badshah', who is originally from Bhavnagar, migrated to Surat to start as a diamond businessman. He said, 'At present, we are using this car in Surat and we have not made any journey on the highways or other districts. In the city, wherever we go, around 50 to 100 people gather on the spot to see the car. People are curious to know about the interiors and other aspects of the car. We have to take extra care. The entire body of the car is made of stainless steel, which has sharp curves, and the tyres are designed in such a way that the car can also run on rough paths.'
A large number of people, including relatives and acquaintances of the Daliyas family, have started arriving at their homes and offices with their children to see the car since Thursday, after videos went viral on social media.

Cost of green hydrogen in India set to fall by up to 40%

The cost of green hydrogen in India , the country that is aiming big in the renewable energy space, is expected to fall by up to 40 per cent with the support and incentives the government is providing, according to a report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. The levelised cost of green hydrogen in India is seen falling towards ₹260-310 per kg ($3-3.75 per kg). India provides cheap renewable electricity to hydrogen manufacturers, waives Inter-State Transmission Charges for open access, lowers distribution and transmission charges, and lowers the GST rate for hydrogen to 5 per cent. Besides, the report asserts electrolyser manufacturers are projected to achieve a 7-10 per cent reduction in total system costs for the first five years, starting in 2024--₹2,960/kW (USD 36/kW) being the average annual realisable base incentive. "While the green hydrogen scheme is an important step for India, refinements are needed to promote long-term investment and project viability," says the report. The report asserted that India's green hydrogen mission has been enthusiastically received by industry. It added, however, that the scheme needs fine-tuning to attract startups, be competitive for global players and create a supply chain and secure demand to ensure the industry's long-term viability. "If successful, it could help build India's green hydrogen industry with benefits for a range of sectors including agriculture, transport and manufacturing," the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis report added. India launched its National Green Hydrogen Mission in January 2023 with an overall outlay of ₹19,744 crores. The country has set an ambitious target of achieving a green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million tonnes by the end of 2030. The programme consists of two distinct financial incentive mechanisms to support domestic electrolyser manufacturing and Green Hydrogen production. The green hydrogen mission, which aims to establish 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030, represents a significant step towards realising India's ambitions in the hydrogen economy. India meets a sizable portion of its energy needs through fossil fuels, and various renewable energy sources, including green hydrogen, are seen as an avenue to reduce dependence on conventional sources of power. Green energy for climate mitigation is not just a focus area for India; it has gained momentum globally. At COP26 held in 2021, India committed to an ambitious five-part "Panchamrit" pledge. They included reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, and reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030. India as a whole also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent. Finally, India commits to net-zero emissions by 2070.

Pak hikes defence spending by 20% in budget amid tense relations with India

Pakistan on Tuesday increased its defence budget by 20 per cent, allocating PRs. 2,550 billion (USD 9 billion) for the fiscal year 2025-26, amid tensions with India. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented the PRs. (Pakistani Rupees) 17,573 billion worth federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 in the National Assembly. He also presented the budget document as a finance bill in the National Assembly. In his speech, the minister said that the government has 'decided to allocate PRs. 2,550 for the defence of the country'. He didn't provide any further details about the defence spending as traditionally the defence budget is not discussed by the parliament. Last year, the government allocated PRs. 2,122 billion for defence, reflecting a 14.98 per cent increase over PRs. 1,804 billion budgeted for the fiscal year 2023-24. 'This budget is being presented at a historic time when the nation showed unity [and] determination,' the minister said at the start while mentioning the recent Pak-India conflict. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. The on-ground hostilities from the Indian and Pakistan sides that lasted for four days ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10. The defence sector expenses are the second-biggest component of the annual expenditure after the debt payments. The government allocated PRs. 8,207 billion for debt servicing, which constitutes the single biggest expense. The increase in the defence expenditure is expected to get the broad support of the lawmakers during the budget debate and voting on the finance bill. Aurangzeb also announced a 4.2 per cent GDP growth target for the economy which is higher than the 2.7 per cent achieved in the current year ending on June 30. He said that debt and interest servicing would cost PRs. 8,207 billion. Other key expenses include PRs. 971 billion for civil administration, PRs. 1,186 billion for subsidies, PRs. 1,055 billion for pensions and PRs. 1,000 billion for the Public Sector Development Programme. He said that the target for inflation was 7.5 per cent and the fiscal deficit target was 3.9 per cent as the government also announced to contain the deficit and achieve a primary surplus. The minister said that the government has set an ambitious tax collection target for the Federal Board of Revenue at PRs. 14,131 billion, an 8.95 per cent increase from last year's goal. Aurangzeb said that the main success of the government was that inflation was reduced to 4.7 per cent in the outgoing fiscal whereas it was 29.2 per cent two years ago, while the government achieved a current account surplus of USD 1.5 billion. He said the forex reserves will touch USD 14 billion by the end of the year and remittances were expected to reach USD 38 billion.
